SUMMARY:A quiet roar
DESCRIPTION:The opening reception for A Quiet Roar at the May 28\, 6 to 8 pm at the Hyatt Centric.\n\n\nA CELEBRATION OF QUEER ARTISTRY:  \nA QUIET ROAR OPENS AT HYATT CENTRICPride Month Exhibit Features Bold Works By LGBTQIA+ Philly Artists  \nKeith R. Breitfeller\, Brian David Dennis\, and Patrick Michael Carrow \n  \nPHILADELPHIA\, PA (May 14\, 2025) – Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia\, the upscale lifestyle hotel in Rittenhouse Square\, is continuing its annual Pride Month celebration with the opening of A Quiet Roar\, a multidisciplinary exhibition curated by InLiquid\, featuring the work of three Philadelphia-based LGBTQIA+ artists: Keith R. Breitfeller\, Brian David Dennis\, and Patrick Michael Carrow. The exhibit runs from May 15 through July 14\, with an opening reception on Wednesday\, May 28 from 6–8 PM. \n \nThe public is invited to celebrate the opening of A Quiet Roar at the May 28 reception from 6 pm to 8 pm\, where guests can enjoy complimentary light bites from Patchwork Restaurant and pay-as-you-go cocktails from the adjacent bar. All artwork and accessories on view will be available for purchase. \n  \nA Quiet Roar invites guests to reflect on themes of interconnectivity through color\, form\, and materiality. This multidisciplinary exhibition brings together the work of three Philadelphia-based LGBTQIA+ artists—Keith R. Breitfeller\, Brian David Dennis\, and Patrick Michael Carrow—whose practices are united by a deep\, intuitive understanding of how objects and ideas relate. From hyper-saturated pointillist canvases and emotionally charged installations to sustainable fashion accessories crafted from upcycled textiles\, each artist channels personal history and material sensibility into a broader meditation on connection. Whether in the shared studio practice of Breitfeller and Dennis\, or the tactile storytelling embedded in Carrow’s handbags\, A Quiet Roarmakes space for introspection and joy in equal measure. \n  \nArtists Keith R. Breitfeller and Brian David Dennis\, partners in both life and art\, offer a cohesive visual dialogue grounded in contrast and complement. Breitfeller’s paintings—comprised of countless individual dots in shifting color palettes—are influenced by pointillism and modernist composition\, seeking a meditative stillness amidst sensory overload. Dennis’s multimedia installations\, often built from salvaged materials\, are energetic and transformative\, drawing attention to the overlooked textures of everyday life. His work merges spontaneity with formal precision\, guided by influences ranging from Josef Svoboda’s theatrical set design to the emotive intensity of Francis Bacon. Patrick Michael Carrow\, founder of Patrick Michael Accessories\, contributes a tactile dimension to the exhibition with his one-of-a-kind handbags crafted from surplus fabric swatches. With a discerning eye for pattern\, texture\, and proportion\, Carrow allows the materials themselves to guide his design process\, celebrating sustainability and individuality through wearable art. \n  \n“We’re proud to continue our partnership with InLiquid and to present A Quiet Roar during Pride Month\,” said Elizabeth Fricke\, Director of Sales and Marketing at Hyatt Centric Philadelphia. “This year’s exhibit showcases the quiet strength\, creativity\, and dialogue shared between artists who approach their practice with intention and love—both for their craft and for the community.” \n

Faith communities provide blankets when it’s cold\, cooling when it’s hot\, access to food pantries and other critical resources communities need as extreme weather events increase and worsen. \nClimate change and adverse health outcomes are significant and growing challenges\, particularly for low-income communities of color\, the elderly\, children\, and pregnant people in the Philadelphia region. Climate-related health issues contribute to a widening healthcare gap\, which is acute for many neighborhoods and residents that faith communities serve. \nJoin us for a community meal and roundtable to unpack how climate change is impacting the health and wellness of people the faith community serves and the role the faith community plays in climate resilience and justice. The knowledge roundtable participants’ share will anonymously inform a climate and health feasibility project\, which is the first step in the potential development of a climate and health fund by Bread & Roses Community Fund. Attendance is capped to 30 participants so register today! \nRoundtable participants will receive a $50 gift certificate and a meal for sharing their wisdom and expertise. This convening is limited to folks in the following six counties: Philadelphia\, Bucks\, Delaware\, Chester\, Montgomery\, and Camden (NJ). \nLocation: Germantown Unitarian Church6511 Lincoln Dr\, Philadelphia\, PA19119Date: Thursday\, May 29thTime: 6:00-6:30 pm Community Meal 6:30-8:30 Roundtable Discussion \n \nWho is this circle for?\n\nYou are a religious leader supporting your congregation in providing community services like a food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinics\nYou are a volunteer who supports your local congregation in providing community services like a food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinics\nYou are a person who accesses community services through a local congregation’s food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinic\nYou are a person of faith/conscience/values that supports community mutual aid efforts\nYou are a person who holds a unique perspective or experience or passion related to gaps in the region at the intersections of faith\, climate\, and health\n\n \nIf you are not sure if this circle is a good fit for you\, please reach out to Sparrow sparrow@paipl.org to learn more about this circle\, who it is designed for\, and what outcomes we hope to achieve. \n \nAccessibility:\nGetting There: \n\nBy public transportation: Accessible by Regional Rail Line (R8 – Chestnut Hill West – Upsal Train Station) just two blocks North of the Church. Bread & Roses provides grants for community organizing\, defined as community-led collective action\, which is essential to address how a global challenge like climate change can profoundly affect local communities\, especially communities already grappling with environmental racism and racialized wealth gaps. \nPA IPL is a regional nonprofit focused on mobilizing people of faith and conscience to take action on climate change as a moral issue. We are a network of people\, communities\, and congregations taking action across Pennsylvania and Delaware through reflection\, education\, advocacy\, and conservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Westbrook Lecture—Beyond the Binaries: The New Science of Sex and Gender
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Mallika Sarma\, Agustín Fuentes\, and Nathan Lents reveal how sex & gender are not always neatly coupled in humans nor animals.\n\n\nANNUAL WESTBROOK LECTURE\nBeyond the Binaries: The New Science of Sex and Gender with Mallika S. Sarma\, Agustín Fuentes\, and Nathan H. Lents\nRecent executive orders in the United States and Supreme Court decisions in the United Kingdom have claimed a scientific consensus regarding the binary nature of sex and gender. But is that what science actually shows? Far from affirming a simple binary\, the past two decades of sex and gender research\, in both humans and other animals\, has revealed a striking amount of diversity\, adaptability\, and creativity in the approach to sexed bodies and gendered behaviors. \nBiologists have long understood that variation and diversity are the hallmark of life. In fact\, the entire reason that sexual reproduction is favored among plants and animals is its tendency to constantly generate and spread variation\, leading to a population with a wide diversity of traits. More recently\, biologists and anthropologists have begun to appreciate and describe the diversity of sex itself. \nFor its annual Westbrook Lecture on May 29th\, the Wagner will host a panel discussion led by anthropologist Mallika Sarma (University of Pennsylvania) with evolutionary anthropologist Agustín Fuentes (Princeton University) and biologist Nathan H. Lents (CUNY) about the nature\, origin\, and purpose of sex and gender diversity in humans and other animals. In his new book\, The Sexual Evolution\, Lents takes readers on a tour through sexual diversity throughout the animal kingdom and explores its many benefits for robust and resilient populations. And Fuentes\, in his new book\, Sex is a Spectrum\, demolishes the notion that biological sex is a simple binary reduced to eggs and sperm. In what is sure to be a lively and surprising discussion\, these prominent scientists will explore the science of sex and gender. A book signing and reception with the speakers will follow the talk. \nProgram Schedule: \nMuseum open until 5:45 pm. \n6 – 7:30 pm: Panel discussion and Q&A in the Lecture Hall. \n7:30 – 8:30 pm: Book signing and reception in the Museum. \nAbout the Speakers\nAgustín Fuentes is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University and the author of Race\, Monogamy\, and Other Lies They Told You\, Why We Believe: Evolution and the Human Way of Being. His new book is Sex is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary. \nNathan H. Lents is Professor of Biology at CUNY and the author of Human Errors\, Not So Different: Finding Human Nature in Animals\, and the newly released The Sexual Evolution: How 500 Million Years of Sex\, Gender\, and Mating Shape Modern Relationships. \nMallika S. Sarma is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and formerly a Research Fellow at the Translational Research Institute for Space Health at the Human Spaceflight Lab at John Hopkins University. \n\n\n\nAbout the Annual Westbrook Free Lectureship\nDr. Richard B. Westbrook\, Trustee of the Wagner Free Institute of Science from 1884 until his death in 1899\, established the Westbrook Free Lectureship as a means to encourage open discourse on scientific subjects\, especially “disputed questions in science and theories of Evolution.” Since 1912 when the series began\, Westbrook lecturers have included some of the most distinguished scientists and scholars of the past 100 years\, among them paleontologist William Berryman Scott\, anthropologist Nina Jablonski\, and and oceanographer Sylvia Earle. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n\nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission to the lecture is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: \n“Simia Sphinx Linn\,” Schreber\, Johann Christian Daniel\, et al.
