Creating with “All Paper” has become a challenge and the driving factor in my work. The words “What If” are a big part of my creative process. My intent is to see what I can create and what stories I can tell using the wonderfully simplistic elements of paper. On my journey from Corporate America to creating with paper\, I’ve found what I believe to be my life’s work. It grows and evolves with each piece. It’s been a test of my Faith\, Endurance and Belief\, not to mention\, a whole lot of Prayers that has brought me to this moment. Viewed from a distance\, her images appear to be paintings. However\, upon closer inspection\, they are “painted” with tiny pieces of paper in a laborious process thatstarts with the fabrication of handmade papers\, as well as sourcing vintage paper from around the world. \nPrior to embracing collage\, Ward served as art and creative director of a Fortune 500 Company where she traveled widely and worked with major museums. After studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia College of Art and receiving her certification in print production\, Ward attended paper-making workshops at Abington Art Center and attended Arcadia University in Philadelphia. Later\, she studied with a master paper maker in Umbria\, Italy. Ward makes some of her own paper which she combines with sourced papers to form the foundation for her images. The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East and West Park from 1896-1946\, providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this 4-mile loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail: \nFairmount Park Conservancy–along with its key partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance (BPTA)–have been working to develop the Trolley Trail while pursuing key goals: reducing adverse impacts on habitat and preserving the single track mountain bike trails. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history and hidden gems of East Fairmount Park on this guided bike tour. \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, November 12\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n1:30pm – 4:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nLloyd Hall\n1 Boathouse Row\nPhiladelphia\, PA \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and experienced bike tour guide Graham Robb on an eight-mile\, all-levels bike ride of East Fairmount Park on November 12 from 1:30–4:30 PM. \nThe guided bike ride will highlight the history\, hidden gems\, and stories of interesting places in East Fairmount Park. Stops include the birthplace of the park at Lemon Hill Mansion\, Sedgeley Porter’s House — a little-known or seen house that is the first Gothic Revival building in the US\, Hatfield House\, John Coltrane’s House\, the Discovery Center\, Smith Playhouse\, as well as many of the park’s beautiful colonial-era mansions. Graham is a great storyteller who will share many perspectives on our park’s past\, present\, and future. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Graham Robb is a “retired” lawyer who enjoys biking\, hiking\, gardening and learning anything new.  When he is not officiating high school sports he volunteers much of his time with various organizations including Habitat for Humanity for whom he leads teams of volunteers on builds around the world.  A lifelong resident of Philadelphia\, Graham is something of a history and genealogy buff – having traced his Philadelphia ancestors back to the 1680s – and loves sharing past and current stories about his favorite city. \nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe bike ride is roughly eight miles (moderate exertion). Most of the ride is flat; however\, there will be some hilly sections.\nThis event is BYOB….as in\, bring your own bike (and helmet!). No bike? No problem! We’re meeting right next to Wheel Fun Bike Rentals.\nEveryone must wear a helmet at all times. Riders who arrive without a helmet will not be permitted to join the tour.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 14 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms available at the start/end of the tour but not in the middle so please plan accordingly.\nThe bike ride visits the places listed above but does not go inside.\n\n\nPARKING: There is plenty of free parking in the Lloyd Hall lot at Waterworks Drive. Additional limited parking can be found in the Lemon Hill area / Sedgley Drive\, and in the small lot at the far end of Boathouse Row. As always\, DO NOT leave valuables in your car. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Art Museum Drive (a 1/4 mile walk from the start). SUMMARY:Swimming with “Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons From Marine Mammals”
DESCRIPTION:Led by Chandrika Francis of Oshun Swim School. Bartram’s Garden is partnering with Oshun Swim School this fall to offer a series of workshops related to swimming and water\, for Southwest Philadelphia residents. \n  \nThis class/workshop centers Black womxn and non-binary people\, but all identities are welcome (age 13+). \nThis workshop is an opportunity to explore Undrowned\, a “book-length meditation for the entire human species\, based on the subversive and transformative lessons of marine mammals. Alexis Pauline Gumbs has spent hundreds of hours watching our aquatic cousins…Employing a brilliant mix of poetic sensibility\, naturalist observation\, and Black feminist insights\, she translates their submerged wisdom to reveal what they might teach us.” \nThrough moving meditation\, and delving into her text\, games\, and activities\, this workshop is an embodied community-based opportunity to explore the wisdom she gained from our marine cousins. \n  \nThis event takes place at the Fitness Alive Center City location. The Fitness Alive Center City is a heated indoor full-size pool with a shallow end with steps and a deep end of 6 ft.  \n**Two additional signed waivers are required.  Minors must have a parent/guardian’s signature. Please sign Fitness Alive online waiver and the Bartram’s Garden waiver at this time** \n**COVID-19 Precautions: Class size limited to 15 students.  To increase access\, students and instructors are required to be vaccinated OR have a negative COVID test within 24 hours of class time.  Free COVID rapid tests and two-trip SEPTA passes are available at your first class.
