SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Cole Arthur Riley - Black Liturgies
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome award-winning author\, Cole Arthur Riley\n\n\nWe are excited to welcome\, New York Times bestselling author\, Cole Arthur Riley as she launches her latest book\, Black Liturgies. She will be joined in conversation with author and professor Brittney Cooper. A Q&A will follow the discussion. You do not want to miss this! \n****** \nA collection of prayer\, poetry\, and spiritual practice centering the Black interior world\, from the New York Times bestselling author of This Here Flesh and creator of Black Liturgies \n“A true spiritual balm for our troubled times.”—Michael Eric Dyson\, author of What Truth Sounds Like \nFor years\, Cole Arthur Riley was desperate for a spirituality she could trust. Amid ongoing national racial violence\, the isolation of the pandemic\, and a surge of anti-Black rhetoric in many Christian spaces\, she began dreaming of a more human\, more liberating expression of faith. She went on to create Black Liturgies\, a digital project that connects spiritual practice with Black emotion\, Black memory\, and the Black body. \nIn this book\, she brings together hundreds of new prayers\, along with letters\, poems\, meditation questions\, breath practices\, scriptures\, and the writings of Black literary ancestors to offer forty-three liturgies that can be practiced individually or as a community. Inviting readers to reflect on their shared experiences of wonder\, rest\, rage\, and repair\, and creating rituals for holidays like Lent and Juneteenth\, Arthur Riley writes with a poet’s touch and a sensitivity that has made her one of the most important spiritual voices at work today. \nFor anyone healing from communities that were more violent than loving; for anyone who has escaped the trauma of white Christian nationalism\, religious homophobia\, or transphobia; for anyone asking what it means to be human in a world of both beauty and terror\, Black Liturgies is a work of healing and empowerment\, and a vision for what might be. \n… \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! A ll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available through the rear parking lot.

SUMMARY:All About Trees (Winter Course)
DESCRIPTION:WINTER COURSE: BOTANY SERIES – Free course with Professor Karen Snetselaar at the Philadelphia Horticultural Society\n\n\nWAGNER FREE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE – WINTER 2024 COURSE: BOTANY SERIES\nAll About Trees with Professor Karen Snetselaar\n6 Tuesdays from January 16 – February 20\, 6:30 – 7:30 PM \nLocation: This course meets at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society\, located at 100 N. 20th Street in Philadelphia. \nThis course requires pre-registration. Separate registration is required for each student. Sign up here or call 215-763-6529 x14 for assistance. \n \nCourse Description\nThis course will explore several fundamental properties of trees and their importance in our world. Each week the class will consider what science can tell us about one of these properties and apply that knowledge to answer popular questions such as: How are trees able to grow so large? Do they really communicate with one another underground? Why are trees so vital to ameliorating storm water problems in urban areas? \n \nCourse Schedule\n1. Tuesday\, January 16\, 2024 – How Trees Become Trees: Secondary Growth All plant growth originates with groups of cells that are capable of dividing over and over. These groups of cells at the tips of plant stems allow them to get taller. This is called primary growth. Only trees (and shrubs) have stems that can get bigger around\, in a process called secondary growth. This week will focus on this defining quality of trees. We will see how it leads to the production of annual growth rings and how the massive appearance of tree trunks produced by secondary growth hides their vulnerability. \n2. Tuesday\, January 23\, 2024 – Leaves: Photosynthesis Factories The leaves are where nearly all the “stuff” that goes to make up a tree is produced from simple ingredients—water\, carbon dioxide\, and relatively small amounts of a few other molecules. The driving force for this production is energy from the sun that trees (like other plants) use to “fix” inert carbon dioxide gas into energy-containing sugars. All tree leaves use basically this same process. So why do leaves come in so many shapes and sizes? \n3. Tuesday\, January 30\, 2024 – Trees Underground: Taking up Minerals and Water Most plants have as much living material underground as they do above the ground\, and trees are not exceptions to this rule. Almost all the water and minerals that trees need to grow are taken in by their root systems. Trees develop complex relationships with underground microbes that enhance their abilities to take up these nutrients. This week will examine evidence for recent popular ideas about trees “communicating” with each other underground. \n4. Tuesday\, February 6\, 2024 – Transport in Trees Nearly all the water for that giant redwood or spreading oak comes from the soil—how does the tree get the water up to the leaves where it is needed for photosynthesis? Actually\, the water problem is more about how much water is lost through pores in leaves that they have to open to let the carbon dioxide in. A single tree can move over 100 gallons of water a day from the soil to the air. This is just one of the ways that trees help reduce negative effects of flooding from storms; we will talk about others too. \n5. Tuesday\, February 13\, 2024 — Seeing the Trees in the Forest By definition\, forests habitats are primarily defined by the species of trees found there. This week will focus on ways that trees influence other living things in different forest and woodland types. \n6. Tuesday\, February 20\, 2024 – City Trees While we tend to think of forests when we think about trees\, the truth is that trees have evolved for many different habitats. Some trees are adapted to meet the challenges of urban life\, such as compact soil\, reduced root area\, and periodic droughts. But even many of these adaptable trees are struggling with the combined effects of climate change and increasing urbanization. What can be done to help promote tree growth in our towns and cities? \nFebruary 27 is reserved for a make-up class\, if needed. \n \nSuggested Reading\nA list of reference materials will be provided. \n \nAbout the Professor\nDr. Karen Snetselaar is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Saint Joseph’s University. She has been a member of the faculty of the Wagner Free Institute of Science since 2000. Her research focuses on fungi and plant disease. She is also interested in urban ecology and in promoting public understanding of science\, especially science education outreach into K-12 schools. For 20 years\, she led the Wagner’s partnership with Saint Joseph’s University\, GeoKids LINKS\, which brings intensive science learning into North Philadelphia schools. \n \nFAQs\nWhat is the cost? \nWagner courses are free; donations are encouraged! \nAre there minimum age requirements to enter the course? \nThe adult lecture courses are offered on an introductory college level. They are open to anyone seeking an introduction to various areas of the sciences as well as those familiar with the subjects who wish to broaden and update their knowledge. The courses also provide an excellent opportunity for motivated junior high and high school students to supplement their current science courses and to help prepare them for further study in these fields at a college level. The courses are appropriate as well for teachers seeking to expand their knowledge. \nWhat are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the course? \nThe Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is located at the northwest corner of 20th and Arch Streets in Center City. It is convenient to multiple public transportation routes. The closest trolley stop is at 22nd and Market Streets. The location is also accessible via multiple bus routes and regional rail lines. There is on-street parking on the surrounding blocks\, and multiple paid parking options\, including a lot at 19th and Arch Streets. \nIs the building wheelchair accessible? \nYes \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nClick the “Contact the Organizer” link\, email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org\, or call 215-763-6529 x14. \n \nImages from top to bottom: Mangrove tree roots in jungle via CanvaPro. SUMMARY:Film Screenings at 12G Salon - Vibrations from Gaza & Spaces of Exception
DESCRIPTION:Vibrations from Gaza and Spaces of Exception will be screening at 12G on Saturday\, January 13th from 2-4pm\n\n\nAfter Spaces of Exception’s sold-out North American Theatrical Premiere run at Anthology Film Archives last month\, as well as other screenings\, the film is scheduled to be shown at 12G in Philadelphia this January! The film\, co-directed by Matt Peterson and Malek Rasamny\, investigates and juxtaposes the struggles\, communities\, and spaces of the Palestinian refugee camp and the American Indian reservation. Space of Exception was shot over the course of three years in the West Bank and Lebanon\, as well as in Arizona\, New Mexico\, New York\, and South Dakota. The film is an attempt to understand the significance of the land – its memory and divisions – and the conditions for life\, community\, and sovereignty. Spaces of Exception features interviews with members of the American Indian Movement\, the Mohawk Warrior Society\, and Diné families resisting displacement on Black Mesa\, as well as Palestinian militant organizations based in the camps\, alongside environmental activists\, autonomous youth committees\, and the families of political prisoners and martyrs. \n_______ \n \nVibrations from Gaza is a short documentary by Rehab Nazzal that offers a glimpse into the experiences of Deaf children in the colonized and confined coastal territory of Gaza\, Palestine. Born and raised under Israeli siege and frequent onslaughts\, Amani\, Musa\, Israa\, and other Deaf Children\, provide vivid accounts of their encounter of bombardment and the constant presence of drones in their sky. \n_______ \n \nVibrations from Gaza and Spaces of Exception will be screening at 12G on Saturday\, January 13th at 2pm. This is an in-person screening. Masking is suggested and masks are available at the venue if needed. 12G will begin its program with an introduction from Matt Peterson\, one of the directors of Spaces of Exception. Tickets are donation-based and you can secure a seat through pre-registration at the LINK IN BIO!

SUMMARY:All Aboard! Philly’s Broad-Ridge Subway\, and PATCO to NJ
DESCRIPTION:Jerry Silverman will lead us on a tour of the Broad Street and Ridge Avenue Subway lines\, as well as the PATCO line to Camden.\n\n\nThe theme is WHAT IS NO LONGER\, AND WHAT NEVER WAS. \nJerry Silverman leads us on a tour of the Broad Street and Ridge Avenue Subway lines\, as well as the PATCO line to Camden. Travel the subway south to the stadiums and north to Fern Rock\, where the subway actually exits the tunnel. From there\, we take the Broad-Ridge Express Spur to 8th and Market Streets and then board PATCO for a ride to Camden and back. \nAlong the way\, see old subway cars rusting at Fern Rock Station\, ride through ghost stations\, and lament the train lines to Cheltenham\, Darby\, Germantown\, Northeast Philly\, and others that were never completed. Additionally\, Jerry discusses the terracotta mosaics hidden inside the Ben Franklin Bridge\, the never-used trolley terminal under the Bridge Plaza\, and previews the soon-to-be-reopened Franklin Square Station. \nWhew! Don’t miss this chance to explore Philly’s underground transit—you’ll never look at Philly’s subways the same! \nGuide Jerry Silverman was born to give this tour. He was the very first rider ever on PATCO as a teenager\, and later served as chair of the SEPTA Citizen Advisory Committee. \n***PLEASE NOTE*** You will need to purchase one SEPTA and one PATCO fare. If you haven’t used SEPTA before\, arrive a little early and we’ll help get you set up. For PATCO\, be prepared to spend an extra $1.40. Jerry will have change. NO BATHROOMS EN ROUTE. \nHidden City Members\, use your promo codes for discounts on tickets! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums?
