Understand the complexities of these communities and how this information influences your home landscaping decisions by exploring the dynamic and diverse plant communities present in our area. Enrich your learning with resources including the Flora of Delaware Online Database and a guide to Delaware Vegetation Communities. \nNote: Lunch is provided on Day 1 and Day 2. The third class consists of a field trip from 8 am – 4 pm. Please bring lunch and prepare for a full day of hiking. Dress for the weather. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Thursday 6/5 and Friday 6/6\, Thursday 6/12 Field Trip (Rain Date: Thursday\, June 26). \n About the Instructor: \nLynn Mahaffy\, PhD\, earned her doctorate in Natural Resources (Wildlife Conservation) at Cornell University. She currently teaches courses for the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware\, including Environmental Biology\, General Ecology\, and her favorite\, Field Ecology\, which exposes students to all the fascinating organisms and habitats surrounding us. \nWilliam McAvoy is Delaware’s State Botanist. Since 1981\, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve. \nThe census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species\, including flycatchers\, tanagers\, thrushes\, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush\, which requires large forests for nesting.

SUMMARY:Working with Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Create a table runner or a set of napkins made using dyes extracted from natural sources like indigo. Diane Keesee discusses historic uses of dyes and how to identify and responsibly harvest local dye-producing plants. Preparation and dyeing techniques using natural mordants and modifiers are presented. Try your hand at these heritage skills and share them with your friends and family this year. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, June 7\, 2025. \n About the Instructor: \nDiane Keesee has a passion for creating interesting signature cocktails\, spirit infusions\, shrubs\, and bitters\, using unique seasonal ingredients. This is a free event for the whole family\, so bring your friends and loved ones along. \nWe’ll have plenty of free food\, so come hungry and indulge in some delicious treats. There will also be live music to keep you entertained throughout the day. You can participate in various games and activities\, shop at our vendors’ booths\, and get your face painted. \nIf you’re feeling creative\, we have a media lab and a community art project where you can let your imagination run wild. And don’t forget to stop by our photo booth to capture memories with your loved ones. \nTo add to the fun\, we’ll also be holding raffles with exciting prizes. And while you’re enjoying all the festivities\, be sure to check out the community resources available to you. \nThis is an excellent opportunity to come together as a community\, have some fun\, and learn more about the resources available to you. DESCRIPTION:The 5th Now + Then Marketplace collaboration with Phila Flea Markets aptly named MEGA MARKET returns around Thunderbird Salvage & The Fishtown Flatiron & Hackett Elementary for the 5th time. One of the largest markets of the year\, the MEGA market surrounds 3 whole city blocks along Frankford Ave\, Trenton Ave\, & York Street and hosts over 200 local vendors. Vendors range from vintage clothing from Kensington Vintage and art from Noah Marcuse\, to local drinks from Jrip Juicery and macaroons from 1984 Cakes.
