SUMMARY:Blueprint for our Future: Declarations of Interdependence
DESCRIPTION:Printmaking by the People Workshop: Create a “Blueprint for our Future” using the cyanotype printmaking process.\n\n\nIn this workshop let by teaching artists Sofie Rose Seymour and Joy Lai participants will be able to rearrange\, recombine\, and layer together excerpts from the Declaration of Independence\, their own writing and illustrations\, and personal possessions in order to interrogate\, challenge\, and reclaim this document and the nation it created. By having excerpts of the Declaration prepared on transparent sheets\, participants will be able to cut up and rearrange words\, block out or annotate the text\, and add their own words\, creating a new declaration from the building blocks of the old while using the cyanotype process. \nThis event is part of Mural Arts’ Printmaking by the People\, a city-wide project that will help commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration by asking Philadelphians the question\, if the Declaration were to be written today\, what rights would you want it to include? Come join us and have a chance for your work to serve as inspiration for an upcoming mural and to be shown in an exhibition at the Free Library! \nAll are welcome to stop by and print\, no prior experience is necessary.

SUMMARY:Bodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy - Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A Film Screening and Conversation with Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, Silvana Cardell\, and Mey-Yen Moriuchi at Taller Puertorriqueño\nBodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy brings together choreographer Silvana Cardell\, filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, and art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi for a screening and conversation that reflects on and reimagines ecofeminist artistic practice. Silvana Cardell’s new production TERRA: Bodies & Territories will premier in June on the forested land of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in northwest Philadelphia. Cardell’s production aligns the bodies of her dance ensemble with the land\, merging human movement with nature to reveal our inextricable livelihood and empowerment.\nIn this program leading up to the June performances\, Cardell’s work will be discussed in conversation with the groundbreaking work of the artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985)\, whose performative artistic practice embedded her own body into the land. Filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta introduces Ana Mendieta’s work through two short films\, Ana Mendieta\, Nature Inside (8:23 min) and Whispering Cave (27 min) for this exclusive screening. Bringing Cardell’s new production and Mendieta’s work together\, art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi will moderate a conversation on the legacy of ecofeminist artistic practice and its relevance today.\n \nRegister Now\n \nAbout the Presenters: \nSilvana Cardell\, a dancer\, choreographer\, and educator\, has been awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography. With roots in Argentina and the US\, she has directed dance companies and developed programs in both countries. Cardell’s performances blend dance\, theater\, and visual arts\, and draw inspiration from her personal experiences and cultural background. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms available at the start/end of the tour but not in the middle so please plan accordingly.\nThe bike ride visits the places listed above but does not go inside.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\nSpace is limited for this tour and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate. Repeat no-shows may not be able to register for future free events. \n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the Lloyd Hall lot at Waterworks Drive. Additional limited parking can be found in the Lemon Hill area / Sedgley Drive\, and in the small lot at the far end of Boathouse Row. As always\, do not leave valuables in your car. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Art Museum Drive–a quarter-mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at the art museum – also a quarter-mile bike from the start. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \nThis event will take place in light rain. SUMMARY:Girls' High Library Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The Girls’ High Library was once a vibrant hub of learning\, creativity\, and inspiration. However\, it has been closed since 2013. Its research materials still include World Book Encyclopedias and a physical card catalog. There is no access to digital books\, electronic research materials\, periodicals\, and other critical technological resources to ensure that our students can excel and compete academically. Despite our school’s successes and strengths\, our students cannot effectively engage with their present education and prepare for life after graduation without a library and a technologically accessible resource center. \nThis fundraiser aims to restore the library to its former glory while incorporating modern resources to empower current and future students. We aim to provide a state-of-the-art library and resource center staffed with librarians so Girls’ High girls can thrive. And now\, there are three ways you can support\, including our Library Fundraiser planned for Sunday\, May 18th.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad\,” with Andrew Diemer\, professor of history at Towson University and author of Vigilance: The Life of William Still\, Father of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Underground Railroad has long been cloaked in legend\, with that legend only growing over time as filmmakers and novelists have provided their own takes on it and old houses have been claimed to have concealed areas that hid fugitive slaves. Local historians eagerly trace out the tracks of this railroad\, identifying its “stations” and “stationmasters” and “conductors\,” but other professional historians remain skeptical of such claims. \nHear Underground Railroad fact sorted from fiction\, and learn about Philadelphia’s pivotal role as a center of efforts to free people from bondage\, when historian Andrew Diemer comes to the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. \nDrawing heavily from his biography of William Still\, the leader of Philadelphia abolitionist group who helped well over 600 enslaved people reach freedom\, Professor Diemer will discuss the origins and operations of the Underground Railroad. He’ll talk about how people escaped from slavery\, who helped them\, and how Underground Railroad activists dealt with a political and legal system that favored slavecatchers. You’ll learn about the relationship that Black activists like Still and his ally Harriet Tubman had with white conspirators\, many of them Quakers. \nDiemer will discuss the life of Still\, a free-born son of parents who had escaped from slavery\, and how he came to become a pivotal figure in Philadelphia’s organized defense of fugitive slaves\, the Vigilance Committee. You’ll learn how Still kept meticulous records of his efforts to aid fugitive slaves and then drew from those records in writing his monumental 1872 history The Underground Railroad\, which brought to life the stories of hundreds of fugitives who had fled to Philadelphia and described how the fugitives themselves were the Underground Railroad’s engine. \nIt’s a talk that will bring to life a chapter of history that too many have sought to bury or obscure. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: “Resurrection of Henry Box Brown\,” an illustration from William Still’s 1872 book The Underground Railroad. (New York Public Library Schomberg Center.)
