SUMMARY:2024 Joan and Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, May 15\, 2024. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments; lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\nCost: Free. Please let us know you’re coming so we can plan refreshments.\nRSVP Now\nAward-winning author and photographer Tim Palmer will present a slideshow based on his new book\, Seek Higher Ground: The Natural Solution to Our Urgent Flooding Crisis\, published by University of California Press.\nWith striking photos and engaging narrative\, Palmer will explain how efforts to control floods through dam and levee construction have been\, at best\, inadequate\, and how the endless cycle of floods\, damage\, recovery\, and repeated losses can best be ended through the protection of open space on floodplains and through voluntary relocation of homes and businesses from hazard-prone areas. The author will show how the warming climate is making flood dangers worse\, and how an improved response is essential if widespread disasters are to be avoided in the future.\nSee Tim Palmer’s work on his website.

SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams. When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753.\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists.\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. This workshop series will introduce participants to the ecology and taxonomy of aquatic insects.\nLevel 2 workshop is geared to environmental professionals:\nLocal\, state\, and federal aquatic ecologists; interagency review teams.\nBiologists with environmental consulting firms.\nFaculty and students with aquatic emphasis.\nManagers with citizen science programs.\nInformation and Registration\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*. For more information\, visit the Schedule an Exam page.\n* This link may be blocked by some firewalls. If you cannot reach it\, please email tcp@stroudcenter.org to register.

SUMMARY:Practices for Ecological Landscaping: A Plant-Insect Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Humans actively manage and alter the majority of earth’s habitats. Many people notice the more apparent life stages of insects (particularly pests) in warmer months\, but often don’t consider the habitats that insects and other critters need to thrive in managed landscapes. In this presentation\, Karin Burghardt outlines ecological theory and scientific evidence on how decisions within one’s management scope (gardens\, yards\, parks\, and other green spaces) alter plant/animal interactions\, particularly the successful completion of insect life cycles. Further\, Burghardt suggests tweaks to practices such as native plant selection and placement\, yard care\, and pest management to retain biodiversity and function in our spaces. Weather permitting\, the session will include a plant-insect interaction walk in the gardens.\nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Thursday\, May 16\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nDr. Karin Burghardt is an Assistant Professor in the Entomology Department at the University of Maryland and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Trained as a community ecologist\, she specializes in understanding plant-insect interactions in human-modified landscapes ranging from suburban yards to abandoned agricultural fields to managed forests.\nBy examining how human management practices alter the support of biodiversity in these spaces\, the lab’s research program helps determine best practices for how humans can share space with a variety of flora and fauna.\nKarin received her M.S. and PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University\, working with Oswald Schmitz on herbivore-induced defenses in goldenrod plants. Before that\, she received a B.S. from the University of Delaware in 2007\, working with Douglas Tallamy on the role of native plants in ecosystems. Find more information on the lab’s work on her website: burghardtlab.org.

Tickets start at $85 and are available on the Tree House Books’ website www.treehousebooks.org. This annual fundraising event supports the work that Tree House Books does to encourage literacy among students outside the classroom\, to build home libraries across the city\,  and celebrates their unique impact on the North Philadelphia Community. \nThis year\, Tree House Books is excited to honor Ms. Lynn Washington\, owner of retail bookstore Books & Stuff. A long-time supporter\, Ms. Washington has been curating a “book of the month” children’s book selection specifically for the Tree House Books community for over 18 months. These selections of books feature Black characters and authors that Lynn donates brand new to Tree House Books for distribution in our community. Lynn has participated in our annual Philadelphia Literacy Day event and champions Tree House Books throughout the city. Additionally\, Lynn has been a force for Black children’s literacy throughout her life – making her a deserving Champion! \nUpon receiving the news that she was getting this award\, Ms. Washington stated\, “Tree House Books and Books & Stuff are on the same page! I am honored to have my efforts acknowledged by this important community organization.” \nMore about Lynn Washington: \nFor 28 years her job as the Design Studio Supervisor at The Free Library of Philadelphia was to create print materials and exhibits with the goal of informing\, encouraging and promoting literacy. She also began selling books and gift items on weekends at Uhuru Flea Market. \nUnderstanding that having their own home library was as important to a child’s literacy development as belonging to a public library. And also wanting to provide an opportunity for adults to purchase\, quality\, high priced books at a significant discount; Lynn would open Books & Stuff in Germantown in 2015. \nDuring the 5 years as a brick and mortar she met many like minded customers who would become collaborators in the mutual effort to encourage literacy\, particularly among the youth populations in Philly. \nSince closing her shop and going online in 2020 she’s continued to enjoy creating ways to promote literacy online\, vending at events and expanding partnerships with organizations like Tree House Books\, by providing them with the books and stuff they need to continue our mutual goal of encouraging literacy in Philly! \n\nMore about the event: \nThe evening will also be filled with food and samplings of Victory beers\, live musical entertainment\, a silent auction\, and special guests.
