SUMMARY:cinéSPEAK presents In Process with The Philadelphia Animation Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate salon-style conversation with members of Philadelphia Animation Ensemble as they share works-in-progress.\n\n\nIn Process is a cinéSPEAK event series that offers intimate screenings featuring acclaimed local filmmakers. In Process is an opportunity for makers and audiences to delve deep into their craft through dialogue and screening works-in-progress. These salon-style events are designed to inspire and educate both emerging and experienced makers by engaging in hands-on learning\, collaboration\, and experimentation. \n \nThe Philadelphia Animation Ensemble is an open collective of animators with vastly different techniques and styles who come together to play collaborative games and delight in experimental moving image. \n \n**EVENT FLOW: \nDOORS @ 4:30PM \nCONVERSATION & SCREENING @ 5:00PM \n— \n**TICKETS** \n$5-$15 Sliding Scale \nPlease pay as you’re able; No one turned away for lack of funds. Advanced registration is recommended as seating is limited and first come\, first served. \nDONATIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Every penny helps. Support our efforts to launch a brick-and-mortar indie art house cinema in West Philadelphia. \n \nAbout the Featured Artists: \n \nAmy Lee Ketchum \nAmy Lee Ketchum is a Chinese American artist and animator based in Philadelphia. She creates poetic narratives and tactile worlds in her animations which draw from personal and collective memory\, metaphysical narratives\, and dance. Amy teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she is the Chair of Animation. She is also a member of the artist collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid and a founding member of the Philadelphia Animation Ensemble. \nCybee \nCybee is an animator\, storyteller\, and ecologist living in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia. Their work is collaborative\, surreal\, and often pedagogical in nature\, employing a range of digital and analogue techniques. Currently\, they are using animation to share stories of collective struggles against displacement and to celebrate and deepen relationships to land. \n \nMaisie O’Brien \nMaisie is a Philadelphia-based shadow caster and educator. They have toured and practiced their original storytelling with communities including Studio 34\, Black Cherry Puppet Theater\, The Baltimore Crankie Festival\, and Asian Arts Initiative\, as well as developed shadows for collaborations with fellow artists in film\, dance\, music\, and theater. She also works to foster young voices via puppetry and narrative arts workshops\, summer camps\, and festivals. \n \nAbout the Films: \n \nLanterns presented by Amy Lee Ketchum \nLanterns is an experimental stop-animation that explores the connection between invasive species and xenophobia. By overlaying the history of the China trade with imagery of lanternfly squashing campaigns\, the film foregrounds the irony of simultaneous fetishization and othering of non-Western cultures. \n \nThe Word for World presented by Cybee  \nThe Word for World is a short poetic animation illustrating the stories of 6 land-defenders in Philadelphia and movements they are a part of. Deeply collaborative in nature – the project began with a community storytelling workshop\, in which activists wove together\, learned from\, and celebrated each other’s stories to generate a short script. The script is now being animated by 6 animators of various styles and mediums to create an exquisite-corpse-style animation. \n \nThe Artist presented by Maisie O’Brien \nThe Artist is an original short story about making mistakes and healing in better communication with the world\, told through illuminated crankie theater (scrolling panoramic art)\, shadow puppetry\, and song. \n \nAbout the Venue: \nMaking Worlds Cooperative Bookstore & Social Center is a nonprofit cooperative bookstore and social center that promotes collective knowledge\, skills\, and visions of liberation from our communities. \n \nFollow: @makingworldsbooks \n \nAccessibility: Making Worlds is an ADA-accessible space on the ground floor. The event setup is flexible and can accommodate a variety of needs. The bathroom is also ADA accessible with transfer rails (note: the door is not automatic). This is not a scent-free space. Please contact us with any questions or requests for specific accommodations. \n \nParking/Transportation: Street parking is available but somewhat limited. Making Worlds is a short distance from the 34 Trolley 45th street stop and the MFL 46th street stop\, and near several bus lines. \nCOVID Safety: \nMasking is encouraged. If you feel unwell or have had a known COVID exposure in the last 5 days\, please test\, mask\, and/or stay home. \n \nEmail us with any questions at info@cinespeak.org. \n \nABOUT CINÉSPEAK: \ncinéSPEAK is a Philadelphia-based arthouse cinema and journal that cultivates experiences and opportunities for filmmakers and moviegoers\, celebrating and strengthening local community and global movements for collective liberation. \n \nOur multidisciplinary work directly supports emerging artists\, filmmakers\, and writers through screenings\, salons\, and cultural reporting—all of which center the stories from those historically excluded in the film and media industry. We bring independent films to new audiences\, partnering with community organizations to create a more equitable and nourishing cinema ecosystem. \n \nSUPPORT OUR WORK–> https://givebutter.com/cinespeaklove \nFOLLOW THE JOURNEY–> \nwww.cineSPEAK.org \n@cineSPEAK (Instagram; Twitter; Facebook) \nSTAY IN THE LOOP—> https://bit.ly/cinéSPEAKMail

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk\, Wendel White: Folding Time
DESCRIPTION:A presentation about his research in creating his three pivotal bodies of work: Manifest\, Schools for the Colored\, and Red Summer.\n\n\nJoin us for this compelling presentation by Wendel White on \nSaturday\, October 5th at 3:30 pm. \nA light reception will follow as part of the exhibition\, Folding Time. On view from September 3 through October 26\, 2024. \nWendel White is a distinguished South Jersey-based photographer known for focusing on Black history and the legacy of slavery through his foundational projects: Schools for the Colored\, Red Summer\, and Manifest. The exhibition Folding Time will display a selection of photographs from each series. Through these bodies of work\, White is effectively folding time by bringing the past and the present into a shared space. \nWhite’s series Manifest explores Black material culture across public collections in the original thirteen English colonies and Washington\, DC\, showcasing artifacts that range from receipts for human purchases to everyday items\, illuminating the historical narrative of the Black community in America. Schools for the Colored documents segregation with historic African American school buildings\, particularly in the northern “Up-South” states. The digital imaging technique that obscures the landscape surrounding the schools\, and in some cases\, the schools themselves\, is a visual representation of the W.E.B. DuBois literary metaphor of the “veil” as a social barrier. \nRed Summer delves into locations where racial violence erupted between 1917 and 1923\, combining contemporary landscapes with fragments of historical newspaper reporting to bridge past and present perspectives. \nAbout the Artist \nBorn in Newark\, New Jersey\, Wendel White holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. He currently serves as a Distinguished Professor of Art & American Studies at Stockton University and has received numerous awards\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship; an honorary Doctor of Arts at Oakland University; a Robert Gardner Fellow in Photography\, Peabody Museum\, Harvard University; and multiple artist fellowships from the New Jersey State Council for the Arts. His work has been exhibited widely and is housed in prestigious collections and institutions worldwide. \nimage above: Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth\, Bordentown\, New Jersey. SUMMARY:October First Saturday— Home Soil: The Minerals and Geology of Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discover local minerals and explore the Wagner’s collections.\n\n\nOCTOBER FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE\nHome Soil: The Minerals and Geology of Philadelphia\n \nFrom quartzite to kyanite to garnets—Philadelphia is home to a vast array of regional minerals. Join us on Saturday\, October 5th as geologist Bruce Mitchell from the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society engages visitors of all ages in learning about Philadelphia’s rich geological landscape. \n \nAt 1 PM\, join Bruce for an illustrated talk in our historic Lecture Hall about rocks and minerals in this region\, including many that were found—and can still be found!—in Fairmount Park along Wissahickon Creek. Bruce will share facts about\, and images of\, minerals collected by the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society. Featured specimens include some collected a few weeks ago and others collected over a hundred years ago! Adults and children will also have the opportunity to closely examine and handle some of the specimens during the talk and afterward. \n \nBruce T. Mitchell is a retired geologist\, who had a long career as a geophysicist and geological advisor. He currently serves as Program Chair of the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society and enjoys collecting minerals from the old iron mines near Philadelphia. \n \nThe Wagner is home to an extensive collection of minerals\, which are on display in the Exhibit Hall. The mineral cases as well as the rest of the natural history collection will be available for self-guided exploration throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 natural history specimens\, including ancient fossils and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display. \n \nSchedule: \n12 – 4 PM: Museum open for exploration \n1 – 2PM: The Minerals and Geology of Philadelphia: A Talk with Bruce Mitchell \n\n\n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. SUMMARY:Thriving Through Eco-Anxiety: From Ecological Grief to the Capacity to ACT
DESCRIPTION:An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based training focused on addressing climate-related anxiety and grief (3 CE’s available)\n\n\nAs climate crisis intensifies\, eco-anxiety (i.e.\, distress and dysfunction that accompany awareness of climate crisis) is quickly becoming the major mental health crisis of the modern era. Eco-anxiety is notoriously difficult to treat\, both because it is founded in rational fears and because the grief\, rage\, panic\, and powerlessness people experience when considering climate crisis can be overwhelming\, both for clients and the professionals who work with them. This experiential and skills-building workshop will explain eco-anxiety in two contexts crucial for fostering resilience: death anxiety and anticipatory grief. Using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) framework\, participating practitioners will learn to guide clients through the process of accepting their anxiety and working through their grief. We will discuss personal/professional experiences with eco-anxiety\, learn to flip the script on eco-anxious thoughts\, and identify values and goals that would be workable even in the face of eco-anxiety’s scariest narrative: human extinction. Once integrated\, eco-anxiety can become an empowering force\, inspiring us to make more meaningful choices and live more fulfilling lives\, even in the context of an ongoing existential threat. \n \nAbout the Presenter: \nDevin Guthrie\, Ph.D. is an existential psychologist whose research aims to find better ways to treat eco-anxiety\, death anxiety\, improve end-of-life care\, and promote meaning in life. They also practice as a life and death coach\, helping clients live with physical\, mental\, and existential pain. \nLearning Objectives: \n· Explain the relationship between eco-anxiety\, death anxiety\, and psychological flexibility as well as the life-enhancing (acceptance-based) and life-limiting (avoidance-based) trajectories of eco-anxiety. \n· Identify and explore values and goals that are resilient to the threats posed by climate crisis. \n· Implement at least 2 ACT interventions for addressing eco-anxiety. \n \nBonus Activity: Following the training on Eco-Anxiety (10am-1pm)\, we will take a short break and are excited to host an optional 1-hour mindfulness training (1:30pm-2:30pm): Mindful Movement for Climate Resilience\, led by Oana Nechita\, MA\, LPC\, RYT. This is an embodied invitation to honor\, open to\, and move through our collective pain for the natural world. This will include self-regulatory practices (breath\, chanting) and gentle\, trauma-conscious somatic practices accessible to all. Together\, we hope to co-create a heart-supporting space to hold and process our collective grief. (Note: if you are planning to attend this portion of the training\, please bring a yoga mat or towel if you have one) \n \nDisclosure of Conflict of Interest: \nThe presenters have no conflicts of interest to declare. \n \nCancellation Policy: \nTo receive a full refund\, a written request must be received before September 22. After September 22\, $25 will be deducted from refunds for professionals and $15 will be deducted from students. Refunds will be processed within 5 days. \n \nIntended Audience: \nAudience for which this program is intended includes psychologists\, clinical social workers\, professional counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, certified alcohol & drug counselors\, and students in related fields. \n \nCE Information: \n3 CE’s are available for complete attendance of the eco-anxiety portion of the training led by Devin Guthrie (10am-1pm). \n \nThe Association for Contextual Behavioral Science is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Association for Contextual Behavioral Science maintains responsibility for this program and its content. \n \nTo the best of our knowledge\, the below State Boards accept continuing education credits for programs approved by APA. Please confirm with your licensing board to confirm eligibility. PA State Board of Social Workers; PA State Board of Licensed Professional Counselors; PA State Board of Marriage and Family Therapists; NJ Board of Licensed Professional Counselors; NJ Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners; DE Board of Social Work Examiners; and DE Board of Professional Counselors of Mental Health.
