Bhante Pemaratana of the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center will share a short presentation titled\, “Caring for All Life: How to recognize the value of all forms of lives and the greater responsibility of human beings for the wellbeing of whole ecosystem.” George Hoguet of Earth Holder Community and the Order of Interbeing will share reflections on “The Way Out Is In: When we stop\, go into our inner stillness and look deeply\, we can awaken to the reality of Interbeing\, awaken beyond environmentalism and the illusion that we are separate from the Earth\, from other species and from one another\, and discover instead Right View (of relationship) from which flows all Right Thoughts & Right Actions to heal our precious planet.” \nBring your lunch and your questions – we can’t wait to see you there! \nSeries co-sponsors: \nBetter Path Coalition\, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light\, Green Muslims \nConversation co-sponsors: \nPittsburgh Buddhist Center\, Earth Holder Community \n\n\n\n\nBhante Pemaratana is the chief monk of Pittsburgh Buddhist Center and Cleveland Buddhist Vihara. Born and trained in Sri Lanka\, he moved to the US in 2008 and earned a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 2017. He teaches Buddhism\, mindfulness\, and meditation and provides spiritual counseling to help people to deal with challenging issues of life. \n\n\n\nGeorge Hoguet\, a native of Philadelphia\, worked for 30 years in the factory automation industry. He later supported developments of renewable energy policies and systems with Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture)\, and Native Energy of Vermont. In 2007\, George was trained by former Vice-President Al Gore to present the slideshow from the film\, An Inconvenient Truth\, and gave dozens of presentations to audiences including senior management at large companies like Dannon Yogurt. In the early 1990’s\, George discovered the Engaged Buddhist teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Since then\, he has been active in mindfulness sangha’s (communities) in Philadelphia\, Vermont\, and Pittsburgh. George was ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh into the monastic & lay Order of Interbeing in 2013. In 2015\, he helped found the Earth Holder Community\, an Earth Justice initiative in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition which has since expanded to more than 61 countries.

SUMMARY:Help Weavers Way Germantown go solar!
DESCRIPTION:The Clean Energy Co-op is helping Weavers Way Co-op go solar! \nThe Weavers Way Co-op is on its way to having solar power thanks to cooperation between two co-ops\, Weavers Way and the Clean Energy Co-op (the Clean Energy Co-op is different from The Energy Co-op\, which is a Philadelphia-based energy supplier). Weavers Way Co-op\, a local food cooperative with 4 grocery stores and 2 farms\, has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Clean Energy Co-op to have solar panels on the roof of its new Germantown store. The Clean Energy Co-op uses a proven and awarded method of developing solar projects using collective socially conscious investment of its members. This unique structure allows individuals to directly increase the amount of renewable energy installed in Pennsylvania. The Germantown store solar project is the Clean Energy Co-op’s first in greater Philadelphia\, and is its largest project to date. Members of the Clean Energy Co-op who are legal residents of Pennsylvania can receive the prospectus and choose to invest in preferred shares that would fund the Weavers Way Germantown solar project. \nAn information session will be held to provide individuals an opportunity to learn more about the Clean Energy Co-op and the Weavers Way Germantown solar project on March 13th at 7pm (virtual) To learn more about the Clean Energy Co-op\, become a member\, register for upcoming information sessions\, partner to get solar on your non-profit or community organization\, and follow updates on the Weavers Way Germantown project you may go to www.cleanenergy.coop or email info@cleanenergy.coop.

DESCRIPTION:The Weavers Way Co-op is on its way to having solar power thanks to cooperation between two co-ops\, Weavers Way and the Clean Energy Co-op (the Clean Energy Co-op is different from The Energy Co-op\, which is a Philadelphia-based energy supplier). Members of the Clean Energy Co-op who are legal residents of Pennsylvania can receive the prospectus and choose to invest in preferred shares that would fund the Weavers Way Germantown solar project. \nAn information session will be held to provide individuals an opportunity to learn more about the Clean Energy Co-op and the Weavers Way Germantown solar project: March 13th at 7pm (virtual).  To learn more about the Clean Energy Co-op\, become a member\, register for the upcoming information session\, partner to get solar on your non-profit or community organization\, and follow updates on the Weavers Way Germantown project you may go to www.cleanenergy.coop or email info@cleanenergy.coop.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Xenobia Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Xenobia Bailey as she exposes the deferred historical achievements of Philadelphia’s Radical Black Elite from the early 1800s.\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, in partnership with the Association for Public Art\, is delighted to host artist Xenobia Bailey as its 200th Anniversary signature talk for the theme Soul of America: Literary\, Visual\, and Performing Arts. Ms. Bailey\, a fiber-artist\, crocheter\, designer\, researcher\, and cultural activist\, describes her creative practice and talk as such: \n“I seek the continuum of the aesthetic of ‘Funk’ and material culture across African American communities – from contemporary homemakers\, caregivers\, and domestic workers to early Free settlement towns and colonized communities of Radical Black Elites of the 1700 and 1800s. This exploration can fuel social and economic redevelopment in the 21st Century. In this talk\, I will share how the collection of HSP changed the course of my Black Studies as I knew it\, by presenting a little known Black Model City in Philadelphia. This model is an inspiring\, self-sustained\, early American example of how African American cultural designs and objects can service a global market\, to benefit people’s health and well-being.” \n \n\n\n\nThis event is being offered in a hybrid format. Both onsite and virtual tickets are available. All ticket reservations will include a Zoom link\, but only onsite tickets will be honored at the door.\nOnsite tickets include admission to the talk\, a reception afterwards\, and the exhibit Public Art in Philadelphia: A : Legacy of Women\, co-curated with the Association of Public Art.\nWe wish to provide complimentary tickets to current secondary\, undergraduate\, and graduate students. Please email us at programs@hsp.org and tell us where you are enrolled as a student and in what program.\n\n \n\n\nXenobia Bailey is an artist who studied Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington\, Custom Apparel Design from Seattle Community College\, and holds a BA in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. Since 1984\, she has been developing and practicing a “Rejuvenating Funktional Design Aesthetic” for an African American material culture within a global market\, for public\, private\, and commercial arts. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) commemorates its 200th birthday in 2024!  Since our founding\, we have collected and preserved an astonishing array of documents that bring the people of the past into conversation with us today. We enter our third century eager to invite you to find yourself in history. To connect with the past and make meaningful discoveries about who you are and who we are together. Join us in this endeavor to explore our shared American history. Visit us at hsp.org/200. \n\n\n\nThe Association for Public Art (aPA) plays a vital role in commissioning and preserving public art in Philadelphia\, while promoting the part that art plays in the creation and enhancement of public spaces. Founded in 1872\, 50 years younger than the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, aPA has helped to significantly shape Philadelphia’s urban environment through design and planning efforts. The organization continues to care for and maintain a large portion of the city’s historic sculptures\, while producing new ambitious and engaging public art projects for everyone.

SUMMARY:Women in Horticulture (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, timed to coincide with Women’s History Month\, author Jenny Rose Carey gives a historic overview of American women in horticulture and landscape design. Using archival images and the words of the female horticulturists of the time\, Jenny paints a picture of a movement that brought women to the forefront of the burgeoning gardening movement in the early part of the twentieth century. Jenny will discuss authors\, educators\, garden designers\, the garden club movement\, and conservationists. You might be surprised to learn that the early roots of our passion for native plants and protecting birds was alive and well 110 years ago right here in the Philadelphia region. Learn the names of some of the most incredible horticulturally minded women and their influence on the ways that we garden today.\nThis program takes place online Wednesday\, March 13th\, 2024.\nCheck out Mt. Cuba’s other online classes and webinars here – https://mtcubacenter.org/online-courses/\nAbout the Instructor:\nJenny Rose Carey is a lifelong educator\, garden author\, and former public garden director. She is a practical\, hands-on gardener who gardens on over four acres in Ambler\, PA. She is also a garden historian with a specialty in women in gardens\, and English and American gardens.

SUMMARY:Decarbonizing the Industrial Sector: Policy Oversight
DESCRIPTION:Senior Fellow Danny Cullenward discusses the Biden administration’s use of incentive-based industrial policy in the energy transition\n\n\nThis event is a part of Energy Week at Penn\, a week of energy-focused events across Penn’s campus. Browse and register for other Energy Week events: energyweek.upenn.edu\n \nPlease join us for a reception at the Kleinman Center following the talk!\n\n\nThe Biden administration is presiding over a fundamental shift in climate policy strategy\, having embraced a series of incentive-based industrial policy measures as the primary means by which to accelerate the clean energy transition. The Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are mobilizing massive public and private capital flows\, but the mechanisms by which these laws are transforming the investment landscape involve distinct legal authorities and institutional capacities that are distributed across state and federal agencies. The resulting system of governance is fragmented and under-theorized in the research community. As the initial implementation of tax credits and investment programs rolls out\, this talk aims to categorize the different mechanisms of policy interventions and identify key research needs to inform an evidence-based strategy for implementing green industrial policy. \nSpeaker \nDanny Cullenward is a climate economist and lawyer focused on the design and implementation of scientifically grounded climate policy. His book\, Making Climate Policy Work (with David G. Victor)\, shows how political forces make green industrial policy more effective than carbon pricing. \nCullenward is a Senior Fellow with the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy\, a Research Fellow with the Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy at American University\, and the Vice Chair of California’s Independent Emissions Market Advisory Committee. He previously held research and teaching appointments at UC Berkeley\, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, the Carnegie Institution for Science\, and Stanford University. \nHis academic research has been published in Science and Nature as well as top field journals in ecology\, energy economics\, and climate policy. He has been involved in dozens of legal and public policy processes with state\, federal\, international\, and private sector regulators\, and has given invited expert testimony at nine legislative hearings in California. His research\, public policy analysis\, and commentary is often featured in leading media outlets\, including nationally televised segments on HBO and CBS News. \nCullenward holds a JD from Stanford Law School and a PhD in Environment and Resources from Stanford University\, where he also earned an MS in Management Science and Engineering and a BS with interdisciplinary honors in Earth Systems. \nFind full bios and event details at the Energy Week at Penn website. \n\n\nPlease note this is an in-person event. We look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum. \nPlease join us for a reception following the event!

SUMMARY:Powering the Slum: Exploring Alternatives Forms of Energy for Informal Sett
DESCRIPTION:Join Penn IUR for a conversation exploring efforts to introduce renewable energy to informal settlements in Accra\, Ghana.\n\n\nOn Wednesday March 13th at 9:00am\, join the Penn Institute for Urban Research for a conversation exploring efforts to introduce renewable energy to informal settlements in Accra\, Ghana. Presented by Penn IUR Fellow James Kwame Mensah in conversation with Penn IUR Co-Director Eugénie Birch\, this event builds on the new policy digest published by the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. \nGhana’s electrical system is not only highly reliant on fossil fuels (66 percent of the total) but also does not meet demand due to rapid population growth\, especially in the country’s urban informal settlements. This widespread lack of affordable and reliable energy severely limits informal settlers’ capacity to leap out of poverty and live safe\, healthy\, and productive lives. How can the energy generation mix be diversified to yield the most affordable\, reliable\, and sustainable energy in informal settlements? \nThis event is part of University of Pennsylvania’s Energy Week. SUMMARY:Help Weavers Way Germantown Go Solar!

SUMMARY:Accelerating to Net Zero: Fueling the Clean Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:Anna Siefken\, deputy director of the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)\, shares her expertise and insight.\n\n\nThis event is a part of Energy Week at Penn\, a week of energy-focused events across Penn’s campus. Browse and register for other Energy Week events: energyweek.upenn.edu\n\nAs our planet inches closer to the maximum warming target of 1.5 C\, signaling a point of no return\, governments across the world are called upon to accelerate climate action and set aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. This unprecedented urgency requires us to prioritize sectors where focused action will have the most significant impact. \nCutting emissions in the building sector is key to addressing the climate crisis. Buildings contribute an even higher percentage of the United States’ GHG emissions when factoring in construction materials and refrigerants. As a result\, the Biden Administration has set an ambitious goal–for all new building construction and retrofits to reach zero emissions by 2030\, establishing a resilient and standard practice for our nation’s clean energy future. These efforts\, led by the Department of Energy (DOE)\, will generate savings for consumers\, expand economic opportunities\, and reduce climate-related financial risk. But how will this impact the global economy\, and what role does industry play? \nAnna Siefken\, deputy director of DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)\, discusses the Biden administration’s strategy for the clean energy transition\, and what it means for our future workforce. Under President Biden’s leadership\, the Department of Energy is deploying an unprecedented set of tools aimed at enabling American businesses\, workers\, and consumers to participate in the clean energy economy. She will also explain how FEMP enables our nation’s largest energy consumer–the federal government–to leverage its annual purchasing power of $630 billion to transition its portfolio of 300\,000 buildings totaling $3B square feet to carbon pollution-free electricity and its 600\,000 cars and trucks to zero-emission vehicles. Learn how these programs are driving a boom in American manufacturing\, creating new green jobs\, fueling economic growth\, and helping the United States lead the world toward a clean energy future. \n\n\nSpeaker \nAnna J. Siefken is the deputy director of the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). As LEED AP BD+C\, Anna has spent her career making the business case for industrial efficiency\, climatetech innovation\, and building performance as a means to address the world’s energy challenges and the global urgency of climate change. She is Deputy Director for the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Infrastructure. She concurrently serves as Delegate to represent the United States on Mission Innovation’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) with oversight on Zero Emission Shipping\, Industrial Decarbonization\, and the Green Powered Future. Previously\, Siefken was Senior Advisor and Commercialization Executive to the Department’s Office of Technology Transitions\, where she championed long duration energy storage (LDES) deployment through public-private partnerships with industry. Since 2020\, she has been an appointed U.S. DOE Ambassador for Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E)\, a position she serves at the request of the U.S. Secretary of Energy. \nBefore joining DOE\, Siefken was the inaugural Executive Director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Energy Institute\, which the American Energy Society designated as among the “Top 10 Energy Elites.” She led the Institute to uncover breakthrough technologies to accelerate the transition to a sustainable\, low carbon energy future. Siefken worked extensively to develop the climatetech innovation ecosystem\, with aligned start-ups capturing more than $313M in follow-on funding during her tenure. Prior\, Siefken was VP of Strategic Engagement and 2030 District Director for one of the largest chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council. Before that role\, she was Principal and Officer at ICF\, and Global Product Merchant for Energy and the Environment at The Home Depot. Siefken is a graduate of Duke University. \nModerator \nSanya Carley is the faculty co-director of the Kleinman Center and Presidential Distinguished Professor of Energy Policy and City Planning at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. She holds secondary appointments at the Wharton School and the School of Social Policy and Practice. She also co-directs the Energy Justice Lab and is a Resources for the Future (RFF) university fellow. \nCarley’s research focuses on energy justice and just transitions\, energy insecurity\, electricity and transportation markets\, and public perceptions of energy infrastructure and technologies. With the Energy Justice Lab team\, she built and maintains the Utility Disconnection Dashboard. Carley is an author of the Fifth National Climate Assessment report and a member of the Innovation Policy Forum and the Roundtable on Macroeconomics and Climate-related Risks and Opportunities\, respectively\, for the National Academies. \nPrior to her appointment at Penn\, Carley was a Paul H. O’Neill Professor at Indiana University\, and held administrative positions there as a Chair\, Program Director of the top-ranked Master of Public Affairs program\, and as Associate Vice Provost of Faculty & Academic Affairs. \nIntroduction \nElla Siefken is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. She has three years of research and professional engineering experience focused on industrial energy generation\, specifically nuclear at Westinghouse Electric Company. \n\n\nPlease note this is an in-person event. We look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum.
