SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Clay Cane - Book Signing/ Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we celebrate the launch of political commentator and radio host\, Clay Cane’s newest book\, The Grift\n\n\nJoin us as we welcome journalist\, author\, political commentator\, and radio host\, Clay Cane for the launch of his book\, The Grift: The Downward Spiral of Black Republicans from the Party of Lincoln to the Cult of Trump. \nGet an opportunity to meet Clay and have your copy of The Grift signed. \nYou do not want to miss this! \n——– \nAbout the Book: \nPart history and part cultural analysis\, The Grift chronicles the nuanced history of Black Republicans. Clay Cane lays out how Black Republicanism has been mangled by opportunists who are apologists for racism. \nAfter the Civil War\, the pillars of Black Republicanism were a balanced critique of both political parties\, civil rights for all Americans\, reinventing an economy based on exploitation\, and\, most importantly\, building thriving Black communities. How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries like Frederick Douglass to the puppets in the Trump era? \nWhether it’s radical conservatives like South Carolina Senator Tim Scott or Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas\, they are consistently viral news and continuously upholding egregious laws at the expense of their Black brethren. Black faces in high places providing cover for explicit bigotry is one of the greatest threats to the liberation of Black and brown people. By studying these figures and their tactics\, Cane exposes the grift and lays out a plan to emancipate our future. \n—— \nEach ticket comes with a copy of The Grift. \nAll sales are final. \nOrder of entry will be on a first come\, first serve basis.

SUMMARY:The Disappointed Tourist Opening Reception + Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Ellen Harvey: The Disappointed Tourist on Wednesday\, Jan. 31 from 5-7 pm.\n\n\nEllen Harvey: The Disappointed TouristOn view: January 16 – March 9\, 2024Opening reception and artist talk: Wednesday\, January 31\, 5-7 pm (artist talk begins at 5:30 pm) \nThe Disappointed Tourist is an ongoing project for which Ellen Harvey is making paintings of lost sites suggested by members of the public in response to the question: Is there any place that you would like to visit or revisit that no longer exists? The exhibition has been traveling and growing since 2019 with 300 sites painted so far. Each painting includes the name of the site and the date on which it ceased to exist. Over the summer of 2023 the Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum\, in partnership with Creative Glassboro\, Glassboro Public Library\, Glassboro Historical Society\, and Heritage Glass Museum\, solicited submissions from the local community. Nine suggested sites have been added to this new iteration of the installation including the Whitney Brother’s Glass Factory\, Salem Oak\, Bay Point\, Zee Orchards\, Eighty Acres\, Palace of Depression\, Vineland Speedway\, Veterans Stadium\, and grandparent’s backyard. These new works will debut in the exhibition at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. \nThe project was inspired by the urge to repair what has been lost due to the forces of war\, time\, ideology\, gentrification\, and natural disasters. We live in a world that often feels as though it is vanishing before our eyes. The Disappointed Tourist attempts to honor the trauma underlying the nostalgia that results from our collective and individual losses\, while celebrating the human attachment to places both real and aspirational. It tries to create a level playing field in which personal losses and larger cultural losses can meet and be recognized and create a new conversation about our love for our physical environment\, harnessing nostalgia to create empathy rather than division. \n To learn more about the project\, including reading the stories behind the submissions or to suggest a new site to be painted\, visit: https://www.disappointedtourist.org/ \n\n\nBio \nEllen Harvey is a British-born conceptual artist\, living and working in Brooklyn\, whose work ranges from guerrilla street interventions to immersive institutional installations to large-scale public artworks. Her work is painting-based but utilizes a wide variety of media and participatory strategies to explore a number of interconnected themes such as the social and ecological implications of the picturesque\, the revolutionary potential of ornament\, the detoxification of nostalgia and the role of art and the artist in our society. \nHer current project The Disappointed Tourist\, has formed the centerpiece of a traveling retrospective that has been exhibited at the Butler Gallery (Ireland)\, Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art (Poland)\, Museum der Moderne Salzburg (Austria) and Turner Contemporary (UK). The exhibition at Turner Contemporary was selected by Frieze as one of the five best institutional shows in the UK in 2021.  \nShe has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and internationally\, including in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Solo museum exhibitions (other than her recent retrospective) have included the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia)\, the Groeninge Museum (Belgium)\, the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington DC)\, the Bass Museum (Miami Beach)\, the Center for Contemporary Art (Warsaw\, Poland)\, the Pennsylvania Academy (Philadelphia) and the Whitney Museum at Altria (New York).  \nShe has completed large-scale public artworks for the Miami Beach Convention Center\, Metro-North’s Yankee Stadium station\, New York’s Queen’s Plaza subway station\, Chicago’s Francisco station\, Boston’s South Station\, the San Francisco Airport\, the Philadelphia International Airport\, the Andover Internal Revenue Service Offices and the Flemish National Architect. \nShe is the author of the recently reissued New York Beautification Project\, and her work has been the subject of four monographs to date.  \nShe is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program\, Yale Law School and Harvard College and attended the Berlin Hochschule der Kunste in Germany (no degree). She is the recipient of numerous awards including most recently a Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship\, the Wivina Demeester Prize for Commissioned Public Art and a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.  \nHer work is represented in numerous museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Bass Museum of Art (Miami Beach)\, SMAK (Ghent\, Belgium)\, Berkeley Museum of Art\, Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences (West Virginia)\, Art Omi\, Museum der Moderne Salzburg\, Princeton Art Museum\, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, Gwangju Art Museum (Korea)\, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea (Spain)\, among others. \nHarvey lives and works in Brooklyn and is represented by Locks Gallery (Philadelphia) and Meessen De Clercq (Brussels\, Belgium). \n\n\nBanner image:Installation view of The Disappointed Tourist\,© Ellen Harvey\, Turner Contemporary\, 2021.Photo credit: Thierry Bal. SUMMARY:40PNPB Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a double feature of ‘A River Reborn’ and ‘Higher Ground’ by local environmental filmmaker Ben Kalina with a Q&A!\n\n\nIn conjunction with InLiquid’s 40PNPB Programming\, we will be hosting a film screening featuring a double feature by local filmmaker Ben Kalina. The two films shown are ‘A River Reborn’ and ‘Higher Ground’. Ben Kalina will be present for a Q&A after the screening\, and light refreshments will be provided! \nAbout 40PNPB: \nInLiquid’s 40th Parallel North Preservation Brigade or 40PNPB for short\, believes that art and community can help our neighbors come together to strengthen personal and collective resilience in the face of anxiety\, fear\, and dread that surround the issue of climate change and our future. It takes the focus hyper-local to our neighborhood in northeast Philadelphia which sits on the longitudinal circle known as the 40th Parallel North. \nAbout ‘A River Reborn’ \nAs the Little Conemaugh River winds through the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania\, it forms the backbone of a region with a legacy of industrial might. And like a scribe\, the river carries the weight of that history – mile after mile devoid of life\, poisoned by toxic pollution from countless abandoned coal mines. Generations of residents and neighbors have turned their back on the river\, believing the damage to be irreversible and scolding their children for playing in its orange waters. But a decade-long effort from a coalition of local groups has begun to reveal a different future for the Little Conemaugh and for other rivers in Pennsylvania and beyond. A River Reborn tells the story of the rebirth of the Little Conemaugh\, and what it says about our ability to fix what might have been lost forever. \nAbout ‘Higher Ground’\n‘High Ground’ follows the long history of flooding in Eastwick (a South Philadelphia neighborhood) and Camden\, and how to tackle the changes needed to implement and improve their urban environment. \n

SUMMARY:How to Discuss the Difficult History of the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Omar Dajani and Mira Sucharov about Middle East history\, and how differences do not need to divide people.\n\n\nOver the last several months\, the peoples of Israel-Palestine have suffered trauma on a scale that is unprecedented even for two nations painfully familiar with tragedy. The terrorist attack launched by Hamas on October 7 resulted in the greatest loss of civilian life of any day in Israel’s history. And Israel’s subsequent military assault on the Gaza Strip has led to more civilian deaths than twenty years of war in Afghanistan. Across the country and around the world\, debates about the causes of these horrific developments and the best way forward have been intense and polarizing. Tensions remain high\, and people are struggling to have civil discussions with those who have different perspectives. \nThis session will bring together two experts who have been working across the ethnic divide to explore the most difficult dimensions of the situation in Israel-Palestine and help others find ways to have productive discussions about it. For the last two years\, Omar Dajani\, a Palestinian-American professor of law\, and Mira Sucharov\, a Canadian-Jewish professor of political science\, have been traveling together across Israel-Palestine as they write a book and develop a podcast about their experiences. Over the course of building a professional partnership and friendship\, they have learned many things about themselves and each other\, but one stands out: overcoming differences in views is easier when you start by communicating about values. \nAnd that is the point at which their lectures begin. Examining the region’s history from two distinct backgrounds\, they contend with the markedly different ways in which their own communities—and the people they encounter—see and talk about occupation\, resistance\, legitimacy\, freedom\, security\, self-determination\, and even what it means to be Jewish and Palestinian. They grapple with the distinction between justifying and understanding actions and the tension that sometimes arises between attachment to community and attachment to values. And they consider whether Israelis and Palestinians can envision a shared future without facing the past. \nJoin Perry World House for what promises to be an enriching\, enlightening\, and informative conversation with two Middle East experts who strive to show their students and broader communities that different experiences and different perspectives do not have to divide people\, even when the subject is a complex region with a painful history. Dajani and Sucharov will discuss the history of the region\, the tragedy of October 7 and beyond\, and how to have difficult conversations about both. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n \nOmar M. Dajani is professor of law at the McGeorge School of Law\, University of the Pacific\, in Sacramento\, California\, where he teaches Contracts\, Public International Law and U.S. Constitutional Law\, among other subjects. He formerly served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team in peace talks with Israel\, participating in the summits at Camp David and Taba\, before joining the office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO). He has since consulted on a variety of legal infrastructure development and conflict resolution projects in the Middle East and elsewhere—for institutions including the U.S. Department of State\, the Norwegian Peacebuilding Resource Center (NOREF)\, the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue\, and the European Council on Foreign Relations\, and he currently serves on the board of A Land for All\, an Israeli-Palestinian peace movement. His book\, Federalism and Decentralization in the Contemporary Middle East and North Africa (co-edited with Aslı Bâli) was published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. \nMira Sucharov is professor of political science at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Canada. She is the author or editor of five books\, including\, most recently\, Borders and Belonging: A Memoir (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2021)\, and Social Justice and Israel/Palestine: Foundational & Contemporary Debates (University of Toronto Press\, 2019\, co-edited with Aaron J. Hahn Tapper). She has published over thirty-five scholarly articles and book chapters and is a ten-time teaching award winner\, including having received the top university teaching award in Ontario. Her many op-eds and articles have appeared in the Globe and Mail\, Haaretz\, the Forward\, the Daily Beast\, the Toronto Star\, the Jerusalem Post\, the Huffington Post\, JTA\, and Jewish Currents. She has appeared on CBC\, CTV\, Global News\, Agence-France Press\, and NPR affiliate KDNK; and has been quoted in Vox\, the New York Times\, Buzzfeed\, the Globe and Mail\, the National Post\, and Al Jazeera. She is currently working with Omar Dajani on a podcast about Palestinian and Jewish life in Jaffa called “The Vacant Lot\,” and\, also with Omar Dajani\, a book (under contract with Prometheus) about emotions and attachment in Israel-Palestine. \n \nMODERATOR\nZeid Ra’ad Al Hussein served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2014 to 2018. He was awarded the Stockholm Prize for human rights in 2015 and the Tulip Prize in 2018. He is currently the President and CEO of the International Peace Institute and Perry World House Professor of the Practice of Law and Human Rights at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2019\, Al Hussein was appointed a member of The Elders\, an independent group of global leaders working for peace\, justice\, and human rights\, founded by Nelson Mandela. He served twice as Jordan’s ambassador to the United Nations (in New York) and once as Jordan’s ambassador to the United States. In January 2014\, he served as president of the UN Security Council and earlier\, in 2002\, was elected the first president of the governing body of the International Criminal Court (ICC) — guiding the court’s growth in its first three years from 2002 to 2005. He also represented Jordan twice before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). From 1994 to 1996\, he served as a UN civilian peacekeeper with UNPROFOR.
