SUMMARY:The Misunderstood Politics of the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:David Spence explores how to rescue the U.S. energy transition from voter partisanship.\n\n\nBoxed lunches will be available to go following the talk!\n\n\nWhy is the United States struggling to enact policies to reduce carbon emissions? Conventional wisdom holds that the wealthy and powerful are to blame\, as the oligarchs and corporations that wield disproportionate sway over politicians prioritize their short-term financial interests over the climate’s long term health. David B. Spence argues that this top-down narrative misses a more important culprit—with critical consequences for the energy transition. \nSpence’s book\, Climate of Contempt\, offers a voter-centric\, bottom-up explanation of national climate and energy politics\, one that pinpoints bitter partisanship as the key impediment to transitioning to a net-zero carbon future. Members of Congress respond to voters whose animosity toward the opposing party makes compromise politically risky. The most powerful driver of polarization\, in turn\, is the mixture of ideology and social media that constitutes today’s information environment\, which amplifies anger\, spreads half truths and falsehoods\, and sows division\, distorting voters’ understandings of the energy transition and their fellow citizens. \nIn his talk\, Spence explores the effects of polarization\, partisanship\, and propaganda on energy policy and considers how to build a broader climate coalition. He contends that cooperation on this crucial issue is still possible\, but it will require sustained person-to-person engagement across ideological and partisan boundaries to foster a more productive dialogue. Providing a timely and incisive understanding of the politics of the energy transition\, he suggests new paths forward and offers hope for a net-zero future. \n \nSpeaker\nDavid Spence is the Rex G. Baker Chair in Natural Resources Law at the University of Texas School of Law\, and Professor of Business\, Government & Society at UT-Austin’s McCombs School of Business. Professor Spence’s research and teaching focuses on government regulation of the energy industry\, broadly defined to include economic and environmental regulation of the entire energy sector. \nHe is author of Climate of Contempt: Rescuing the Energy Transition from Voter Partisanship (Columbia Univ. Press\, 2024)\, and co-author of the energy law textbook\, Energy\, Economics and the Environment (Foundation Press\, 6th Ed.\, 2023). Professor Spence earned his Ph.D in political science from Duke University\, his J.D. from the University of North Carolina\, and his B.A. from Gettysburg College. \nModerator\nSanya Carley is the faculty director of the Kleinman Center and Presidential Distinguished Professor of Energy Policy and City Planning at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. She holds secondary appointments at the Wharton School and the School of Social Policy and Practice. She also co-directs the Energy Justice Lab and is a Resources for the Future (RFF) university fellow. \nCarley’s research focuses on energy justice and just transitions\, energy insecurity\, electricity and transportation markets\, and public perceptions of energy infrastructure and technologies. With the Energy Justice Lab team\, she built and maintains the Utility Disconnection Dashboard. Carley is an author of the Fifth National Climate Assessment report and a member of the Innovation Policy Forum and the Roundtable on Macroeconomics and Climate-related Risks and Opportunities\, respectively\, for the National Academies. \n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum. In accordance with the University of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines\, masks are optional for all visitors. Boxed lunches will be available to go following the event!

SUMMARY:Germantown Zine Workshops (September)
DESCRIPTION:Learn a new craft while exploring place-making in Germantown via GIH’s Zine-making workshops.\n\n\nFor the next few months\, the Germantown Info Hub is happy to host zine-making workshops where neighbors can learn a simple but powerful form of storytelling with ordinary materials that you may have lying around your home. \nThese workshops will blend art\, memory\, journalism\, and narrative to explore community history\, create visions for the future\, and explore our personal utopias. We will do this by examining the theme of If Spaces Could Talk…\, where we invite neighbors to recall\, rejoice\, and fellowship in the memories of buildings\, landmarks\, parks and playgrounds\, and other spaces that have meant the most to them in Germantown. \nThroughout six engaging sessions\, we’ll come together\, delve into crafts\, and foster dialogue about the places and spaces that have shaped Germantown into the community it is today. \nThese workshops will also serve as listening sessions that will help inform what we use in our soon-to-come updated Germantown Zine\, which will also follow our If Buildings Could Talk… theme. \nWe invite you to use the QR code below or this link to make your recommendations about spaces and places you think should be explored for our upcoming Germantown Zine. \nFor any questions\, please contact Rasheed Ajamu (all pronouns) at rasheed@resolvephilly.org. Special thanks to Lonnie Young Recreation Center for letting us use their facilities.

SUMMARY:Author Event: The Ballad of Roy Benavidez
DESCRIPTION:Cost: FREE \nRoom 108 \nUniversity of Pennsylvania historian William Sturkey will discuss his latest book\, which tells the dramatic life of Vietnam War hero Roy Benavidez\, revealing how Hispanic Americans have long shaped US history\, from “a major new voice [with] lyrical powers as a biographer” (David W. Blight) \nIn May 1968\, while serving in Vietnam\, Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez led the rescue of a reconnaissance team surrounded by hundreds of enemy soldiers. He saved the lives of at least eight of his comrades that day in a remarkable act of valor that left him permanently disabled. Awarded the Medal of Honor after a yearslong campaign\, Benavidez became a highly sought-after public speaker\, a living symbol of military heroism\, and one of the country’s most prominent Latinos.  An unwavering patriot alternately celebrated and snubbed by the country he loved\, Benavidez embodied many of the contradictions inherent in twentieth-century Latino life. The Ballad of Roy Benavidez places that experience firmly at the heart of the American story. \nSturkey will be in conversation with Nelson Diaz\, the first Hispanic judge in Pennsylvania history. \nRegistration encouraged but not required

SUMMARY:PA IPL Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Taking Root\, Stewards of the Land\, Common Ground\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday\, September 26thTime: 6PMTitle: Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai \n \nDescription:TAKING ROOT tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment\, protect human rights\, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. \n \nSynopsis:TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI tells the inspiring story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai\, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. \nThe U.S.- educated Professor Maathai discovered her life’s work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. Their lives had become intolerable: they were walking longer distances for firewood\, clean water was scarce\, the soil was disappearing from their farms\, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. Maathai thought to herself\, “Well\, why not plant trees?” She soon discovered that tree planting had a ripple effect of empowering change. Countering the devastating cultural effects of colonialism\, Maathai began teaching communities about self-knowledge as a path to change and community action. The women worked successively against deforestation\, poverty\, ignorance\, embedded economic interests\, and violent political oppression. They became a national political force that helped to bring down Kenya’s 24-year dictatorship. \nThrough TV footage and chilling first person accounts\, TAKING ROOT documents the dramatic confrontations of the 1980s and ’90s as the women of the Green Belt Movement confront human rights abuses and environmental degradation. Cinema verité footage of the tree nurseries and the women and children who tend them brings to life the confidence and joy of people working to improve their own lives on their terms. \nTAKING ROOT captures a world-view in which nothing is perceived as impossible and presents an awe-inspiring profile of Maathai’s unstoppable and courageous thirty-year journey to protect the environment\, defend human rights\, and promote democracy. \n \n80 minutes run time \n \nWatch trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwTLbPjVo3Y \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/family viewing. Please reach out to director@paipl.org if you are interested in bringing this screening to your community! \n\n\n______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, September 27thTime: 6PMTitle: Stewards of the Land – Serán las dueñas de la tierra \n \nDescription:Before disaster hits\, three Puerto Rican farmers give it all to grow food that is healthy for the people and the planet. Nothing can stop them. Almost. \n“Eschewing resilience as a trope\, Serán las dueñas de la tierra approaches its subject matter with dignified candor in the face of impossible circumstances.” \n–Néstor David Pastor\, North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) \n \nSynopsis:Stephanie\, Ian\, and Alfredo are landless ecological farmers striving to produce healthy food for local consumption in Puerto Rico. In this economically depressed US-territory – highly dependent on food imports and a frequent target for hurricanes – producing food locally is urgent. The documentary shows the protagonists’ grit as they attempt to carve a living without land ownership or capital. \n \n90 minutes run time \n \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvVgPjEjvGo \n \n*** Film is in Spanish with English subtitles. *** \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/family viewing. The film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us. The film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white\, black\, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate\, save our health\, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late. \n \n87 minutes run time. \n \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-M4Hq0MKFA \n \nView more resources here: https://commongroundfilm.org/resources/ \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/household viewing. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Nature Journaling & Navigating Citizen Science Apps
DESCRIPTION:Observing and recording your backyard biodiversity findings is both an art and a science. Learn some tools for both!\n\n\nExplore the basics of nature journaling with local extraordinaire Carol Welsh\, and bolster your skills in navigating scientific apps like iNaturalist and BirdNet to record your wildlife findings. \nWatercolor paper and paints provided\, although you are welcome to bring your favorite supplies for nature journaling in the field. Participants are responsible for providing their own sturdy shoes\, sun/tick protection\, and refillable water bottle. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the class! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \nCarol Welsh began the practice of nature journaling as she retired from the Educational Foundations Department at Millersville University. She has studied with John Muir Laws in California and with various instructors at the Hog Island ME Audubon Camp. Carol has provided journaling workshops in numerous locations including most recently with the PA State Park Educators. Carol serves as VP of the board at Homefields Organic Care Farm and enjoys creating journal pages through the year at the farm and at the Conservancy’s properties. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!\n \nPhoto: Elyse Jurgen
