SUMMARY:Climate & Health Roundtable and Listening Circle
DESCRIPTION:Faith Community Climate & Health Roundtable Climate and Health Listening Circle\n\n\nHosted by PA IPL and Bread & Roses Community Fund\n\nCongregations and faith-based groups are on the frontlines of providing critical resources and services to communities. By providing these resources\, faith communities are responding to the environmental and climate needs of communities\, often without defining the work in an environmental or climate justice framework. Faith communities provide blankets when it’s cold\, cooling when it’s hot\, access to food pantries and other critical resources communities need as extreme weather events increase and worsen. \nClimate change and adverse health outcomes are significant and growing challenges\, particularly for low-income communities of color\, the elderly\, children\, and pregnant people in the Philadelphia region. Climate-related health issues contribute to a widening healthcare gap\, which is acute for many neighborhoods and residents that faith communities serve. \nJoin us for a community meal and roundtable to unpack how climate change is impacting the health and wellness of people the faith community serves and the role the faith community plays in climate resilience and justice. The knowledge roundtable participants’ share will anonymously inform a climate and health feasibility project\, which is the first step in the potential development of a climate and health fund by Bread & Roses Community Fund. SUMMARY:Westbrook Lecture—Beyond the Binaries: The New Science of Sex and Gender
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Mallika Sarma\, Agustín Fuentes\, and Nathan Lents reveal how sex & gender are not always neatly coupled in humans nor animals.\n\n\nANNUAL WESTBROOK LECTURE\nBeyond the Binaries: The New Science of Sex and Gender with Mallika S. Sarma\, Agustín Fuentes\, and Nathan H. Lents\nRecent executive orders in the United States and Supreme Court decisions in the United Kingdom have claimed a scientific consensus regarding the binary nature of sex and gender. But is that what science actually shows? Far from affirming a simple binary\, the past two decades of sex and gender research\, in both humans and other animals\, has revealed a striking amount of diversity\, adaptability\, and creativity in the approach to sexed bodies and gendered behaviors. \nBiologists have long understood that variation and diversity are the hallmark of life. In fact\, the entire reason that sexual reproduction is favored among plants and animals is its tendency to constantly generate and spread variation\, leading to a population with a wide diversity of traits. More recently\, biologists and anthropologists have begun to appreciate and describe the diversity of sex itself. \nFor its annual Westbrook Lecture on May 29th\, the Wagner will host a panel discussion led by anthropologist Mallika Sarma (University of Pennsylvania) with evolutionary anthropologist Agustín Fuentes (Princeton University) and biologist Nathan H. Lents (CUNY) about the nature\, origin\, and purpose of sex and gender diversity in humans and other animals. In his new book\, The Sexual Evolution\, Lents takes readers on a tour through sexual diversity throughout the animal kingdom and explores its many benefits for robust and resilient populations. And Fuentes\, in his new book\, Sex is a Spectrum\, demolishes the notion that biological sex is a simple binary reduced to eggs and sperm. In what is sure to be a lively and surprising discussion\, these prominent scientists will explore the science of sex and gender. A book signing and reception with the speakers will follow the talk. \nProgram Schedule: \nMuseum open until 5:45 pm. \n6 – 7:30 pm: Panel discussion and Q&A in the Lecture Hall. \n7:30 – 8:30 pm: Book signing and reception in the Museum. \nAbout the Speakers\nAgustín Fuentes is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University and the author of Race\, Monogamy\, and Other Lies They Told You\, Why We Believe: Evolution and the Human Way of Being. His new book is Sex is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary. \nNathan H. Lents is Professor of Biology at CUNY and the author of Human Errors\, Not So Different: Finding Human Nature in Animals\, and the newly released The Sexual Evolution: How 500 Million Years of Sex\, Gender\, and Mating Shape Modern Relationships. \nMallika S. Sarma is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and formerly a Research Fellow at the Translational Research Institute for Space Health at the Human Spaceflight Lab at John Hopkins University. \n\n\n\nAbout the Annual Westbrook Free Lectureship\nDr. Richard B. Westbrook\, Trustee of the Wagner Free Institute of Science from 1884 until his death in 1899\, established the Westbrook Free Lectureship as a means to encourage open discourse on scientific subjects\, especially “disputed questions in science and theories of Evolution.” Since 1912 when the series began\, Westbrook lecturers have included some of the most distinguished scientists and scholars of the past 100 years\, among them paleontologist William Berryman Scott\, anthropologist Nina Jablonski\, and and oceanographer Sylvia Earle. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n\nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission to the lecture is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: \n“Simia Sphinx Linn\,” Schreber\, Johann Christian Daniel\, et al. SUMMARY:Watch Me Backflip Art and Meditation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening of art-making\, connection\, and meditation\, following the themes of Kelly Kozma’s solo exhibition at Paradigm\n\n\nYou are invited to an evening of connection and using artmaking as a tool of self-understanding and compassion. Picking up themes from mixed media artist Kelly Kozma’s acclaimed solo exhibition Watch Me Backflip\, we will get an inside experience of the artist’s process and explore our own creative intuition through guided meditation led by mindfulness teacher Gloria Shepard. \nDoors Open at 6:30 PM \n7:00 PM– Attendees arrive at the gallery and have 30 min to explore the gallery floors and to hear directly from the artist\, Kelly Kozma\, about her solo exhibition and massive installation. \n7:30 PM – Attendees gather on the first floor for brief introductions and a Centering Meditation led by Gloria Shepard. \nDuring the workshop we will: \nShare: \nAttendees will bring a photo or piece of ephemera representing a time of joy or comfort. We will connect with ourselves and each other by sharing about what we’ve brought\, and then sit with Kelly’s question– “What if I told you I believe in you?” \nCreate: \nUsing punched paper circles\, provided by Kelly\, and a 12” wood circle panel\, we will play with colors and patterns\, contemplating the questions\, “What if I told you I believe in you? What would you make\, create\, put out into the world?” Inspired by Kelly’s process\, questions\, by what bubbles up in us as we connect with the art around us\, and by the inner creativity arising within us\, we will each create our own temporary mandala-like piece on the panel. Afterwards\, we will share panels over tea and snacks with the opportunity to take pictures and connect with each other. \nWe will close the evening with another meditation led by Gloria\, then clear our temporary creations and take our panels and chosen punched circles home. These can be an ongoing tool\, reminding us that someone believes in us\, that we are connected through our shared experience at the event\, and to play just for the sake of play! \nSome pillows and seating will be provided\, but attendees are welcome to bring a yoga mat or something of their choosing to sit on. Dress comfy in what makes you feel good! \nSpace is limited. RSVP with tickets in advance. A wellness practice suited for all. No former meditation experience required. \nABOUT GLORIA SHEPARDAs an educator (by nature\, training\, and experience)\, Gloria’s work is to reveal and shift invisible patterns that block the path between where you are and where you want to be. Over the years\, this has taken many forms\, and those are layered into who Gloria is and how she works. Ecology\, experiential education\, classroom teaching\, mindfulness\, meditation\, emotional education and support\, parenting\, transformative work\, shadow work\, astrology\, and family constellations are some of the layers. Formal training\, studying with teachers and mentors\, books\, talks\, and retreats have given her a path. Many years of actually walking the path\, practicing and integrating the teachings through direct experience and trial and error\, have brought the teachings to life. \nABOUT KELLY KOZMAKelly Kozma is a mixed-media and fiber artist who uses the meditative process of hand embroidery as a therapeutic way of healing. Kozma is represented by Paradigm Gallery + Studio and has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Philadelphia\, as well as in art fairs during Armory Week and Art Basel in Miami. Her work has been featured on catalog covers\, in international art and travel magazines such as Afar & Create Magazine\, as well as many online publications. Her work has been purchased for many permanent collections\, including Temple University and Capital One. She has a detached studio at her home just outside of Philadelphia and enjoys the fact that her young son can create his own masterpieces alongside her while she works.

SUMMARY:Venus Fly Trap Opening Performance and Reception
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar presents a site-specific\, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden\, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell\, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom\, extraction\, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden.\n\n\n\nMuch like a Venus flytrap\, the plant this project is named for\, Joiri Minaya’s practice often employs beauty before its bite\, utilizing sensuality\, lush florals and hues to invite deeper reflection on thornier aspects of history and the impacts of colonialism. For this project\, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series\, custom textile elements\, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram’s Garden. \nEstablished in 1728\, Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America\, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia’s history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for Indigenous trade to the role of founder John Bartram in popularizing Eurocentric notions of “modern botany\,” Bartram’s Garden can be understood as a microcosm for the ongoing colonial experiment. With Venus Flytrap\, Minaya extends her long-running interest in foregrounding the histories and possibilities of local and Indigenous plant life. Together\, Minaya and Cassell seek to reveal hidden histories of labor and anti-colonial resistance buried in the grounds of Bartram’s Garden and historic Kingsessing\, and their echoes across the Americas

SUMMARY:DonChristian Jones: The Politics of Mourning IV
DESCRIPTION:DonChristian Jones is a postdisciplinary artist and social sculptor whose practice blurs the boundaries between visual art\, music\, performance\, and social intervention. Working across media and modes\, his work engages architecture\, community\, and futurity—often emerging from spaces shaped by surveillance\, abandonment\, or resistance. \nRaised in Philadelphia and based in New York\, DonChristian’s early years painting inside Rikers Island and other carceral institutions ground his work in both aesthetic experimentation and civic urgency. His installations\, soundworks\, and performances have appeared at The Whitney Museum\, MoMA PS1\, The Shed\, New Museum\, and Brooklyn Museum\, among others. \nIn 2020\, he founded Public Assistants Inc.—a radical mutual aid network and community design studio that reimagines urban space as a site of liberation\, care\, and creative infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Street Movies! Undercover with Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Free community-centric screening series bringing independent short films and videos to vibrant public spaces throughout Philadelphia\n\n\nScribe and Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition present Street Movies! Undercover\, a film screening and performance event on Friday\, May 30th. Join us at Celestial CDC (2800 W Thompson St) for a curated screening of short films about local history in Brewerytown-Sharswood\, and the power of community organizing. Hosted by BSNC’s Sunshine Unlimited team and featuring an opening dance performance by Shirladelphia Classics. \n \nAll Street Movies! Screenings are free\, open to the public\, and family-friendly. \n \nFilm Program: \n \nWalls and Doors: Inspirations From Our Elders (Directed by Jubilee School\, 2008\, 23 Minutes): Students of the Jubilee School have been collecting oral histories and tales of courage and resistance as told to them by their community elders. In Walls and Doors: Inspirations from Our Elders\, the elders are both witnesses and creators of under-told parts of history. Making this video has transmitted a legacy from one generation to the next and given the Jubilee youth a sense of the power of their voices and ability to create change. In this film\, students interview members of the Freedom Fighters\, who successfully desegregated Girard College in the 1960’s. \n \nAthletic Recreation Center – The Jewel of Brewerytown (Directed by Brewerytown Sharswood Community Civic Association\, 2007\, 9 Min): Baseball and Brewerytown have an illustrious history: the famed Oakland A’s baseball team originally hailed from this section of North Philadelphia. Known as the Philadelphia Athletics\, the team was based in the neighborhood in the late 1800s. When they departed out-of-state\, the Athletic Recreation Center was founded at the team’s former site. With a rich tradition of community-based sports and recreation\, the Athletic Recreation Center has been a central feature of the Brewerytown neighborhood for over a century. Boxing\, swimming\, women’s softball\, and basketball have thrived at the center along with its hallmark\, baseball. This portrait video features the reflections of community residents who utilize the center\, from young little-leaguers to senior-aged basketball players who still utilize the center after fifty years. As the Brewerytown section experiences a “growth spurt” of home building and small business development\, the Athletic Recreation Center promises to continue to be a “jewel” in this North Philadelphia neighborhood. \n \nChange the Name (Directed by Cai Thomas\, 2022\, 19 Minutes): An intimate portrayal of Black youth organizing on the west side of Chicago\, Change The Name follows a group of 5th graders from Village Leadership Academy as they embark on a campaign to rename Stephen A. Douglas Park after freedom fighters Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass. Over the course of the three-year grassroots campaign\, the students tackle bureaucratic Chicago Park District systems\, underestimations of their capacity to make real change\, as well as a pandemic and global uprising. \n \nGirard Avenue – A New Destination by West Girard Community Council (2005\, 10 Min): Girard Avenue at 27th Street is a vibrant neighborhood shopping district featuring a plethora of small\, locally-owned businesses. So it was no surprise that neighbors banded together to oppose the planned building of a McDonald’s fast food joint in 2002. The neighbors argued that they wanted to buy local\, and that what the community really needed was a supermarket.
