DESCRIPTION:Join the American Swedish Historical Museum (ASHM) for this fundraising dinner to celebrate our 2024 Outstanding Achievement Award Honoree\, chef Ulrika Bengtsson. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres\, drinks\, and a three-course dinner by Jeffery A. Miller Catering. The Spring Ting Dinner and Auction raises critical funding for exhibitions and educational programs at ASHM. The event is cocktail attire. Tickets begin at $125 for members and $150 for non-members.\nTo learn more and to register visit: https://www.americanswedish.org/events/spring-ting \nAbout Ulrika Bengtsson: Ulrika Bengtsson was born in Värnamo in the southern Swedish countryside\, where her father’s passion for hunting and her mother’s commitment to cooking everything from scratch ignited Ulrika’s love of food. After attending culinary school\, Ulrika worked at restaurants in Sweden before she came to New York City where she fell in love with the vibrant melting pot of world cuisines. In 1990\, she joined the staff at the prestigious Swedish restaurant Aquavit where she gained invaluable experience before accepting a position cooking for the Swedish Consulate General with a focus on introducing American businesses to Sweden. Fueled by her passion for authentic Swedish cuisine\, Ulrika opened her restaurant\, Ulrika’s\, on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan in 1999. The establishment embraced the Farm to Fork concept\, a notion close to Ulrika’s heart since her childhood\, emphasizing the importance of knowing where food comes from. Ulrika’s most recent venture is the Björk Café & Bistro at Scandinavia House on Park Avenue which opened in the Fall of 2022. ASHM is thrilled to honor Ulrika with our Outstanding Achievement Award\, and we look forward to many more of her culinary accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Early Season Garden Care
DESCRIPTION:Gardens can quickly get away from us in the summertime\, with elevated temperatures and rainfall causing many plants to grow in leaps and bounds. Learn and discuss approaches to early-summer maintenance to help you stay ahead of challenges experienced in the throes of the growing season\, from simple techniques\, like managing the size of those oft-flopping tall perennials with a simple “Chelsea Chop\,” to more complex management strategies.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Sunday\, May 5\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nOlivia is a designer at GreenWeaver Landscapes\, a design-build company providing ecological landscape design\, construction\, and gardening to southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. Olivia worked in public gardens for several years before returning to landscape design with a renewed interest in landscape management and sustainability. They are particularly interested in artistic planting design\, taking cues from native plant communities and environments. They hold a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Delaware.

SUMMARY:Nature's Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:with Doug Tallamy\n\n\nRecent headlines about global insect declines\, the impending extinction of one million species worldwide\, and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on Planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can- and must- take to reverse declining biodiversity and will explain why we\, ourselves\, are nature’s best hope. \n \nDoug Tallamy \nDoug Tallamy is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark\, Delaware\, where he has taught insect taxonomy\, behavioral ecology\, and other related subjects. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \nDoug won the Silver Medal from the Garden Writer’s Association for his 2007 book\, Bringing Nature Home\, widely recognized as one of the most important books of its kind. More recently\, he authored another book\, The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden with Rick Darke (2014). To date\, he has written 90 research articles. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence in 2013 and the 2018 AHS B.Y. Morrison Communication Award. \nDoug was a post-doctoral fellow in Entomology at the University of Iowa (1980–1981) after earning a Ph.D. in Entomology at the University of Maryland (1980) and a M.S. in Entomology from Rutgers University (1976). He regularly teaches classes on Insect Ecology and Conservation\, Behavioral Ecology\, and Advanced Ecology. His current research centers on the behavioral ecology of insects\, conservation of biodiversity\, impacts of alien plants on native ecosystems\, and plant-insect interactions. \nPenn State Great Valley encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. SUMMARY:Birding Under the Influence: Cycling Across America in Search of Birds and Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a riveting evening with Dorian Anderson to learn about his exciting yearlong adventure as he took a two-wheeled eco-friendly twist on the Big Year project\, where a birdwatcher tries to observe as many species as possible during a calendar year. He ultimately survived subzero temperatures\, drifting snow\, gusting winds\, lightning storms\, mountainous ascents\, dog attacks\, crumbling roads\, and several accidents. By the end of his travels\, he had spotted 618 bird species across 18\,000 miles of biking! \nAnderson will speak about the genesis of his bike-birding project\, provide a thrilling recount of his travels\, highlight the birds he saw\, and reveal how his adventure changed his life. His personality and enthusiasm are infectious\, and his tales of birding\, cycling\, and self-discovery will inspire others to venture into the outdoors\, take note of the birds around them\, and make positive changes in their own lives.
