SUMMARY:THE AZAR LAWRENCE EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents a tribute to the late jazz icon Pharoah Sanders featuring the renowned saxophonist Azar Lawrence\, at Solar Myth on March 24. \nSaxophone titan Pharoah Sanders was one of the last icons of his generation when he passed in the fall of 2022. He was handpicked by John Coltrane to play on Trane’s late-career masterpieces\, and thereafter released a string of expansive recordings under his own name for the Impulse! label\, which have been cited as a pivotal influence by everyone from Prince to Marvin Gaye to Iggy Pop. Over a career that spanned fifty years\, Pharaoh recorded some of the most revered — and controversial — albums in jazz history\, embracing a wild\, anarchic sound that would reverberate across genres for decades to come. Often by his side in his later years was fellow saxophonist Azar Lawrence. A master in his own right\, Lawrence is a living link to the music’s history\, having played with giants including Miles Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, Elvin Jones\, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. He’ll pay tribute to Sanders’ powerful and spiritual music with this special performance.

SUMMARY:Community Paint Day with the Tacony CDC and Mat Tomeszko
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday March 23rd from 1:00pm-3:00pm for a Community Paint Day\n\n\nStill Life is a genre of art that typically depicts ordinary objects from everyday life. It is deceptive in its simplicity\, because by recording these objects in paint\, over time it becomes a record of history\, and speaks volumes about individuals and a community. \n \nThe Tacony Community Development Corporation is working with artist Mat Tomeszko to create a community Still Life Project inspired by the stories of Tacony. This Spring\, we’ve been collecting stories about the neighborhood and what it means to Tacony’s residents and visitors. These stories will be turned into series of temporarily installed murals at multiple locations along Torresdale Avenue\, with three large\, central compositions containing all the objects from our stories in a classical arrangement\, as well as several small\, individual objects installed throughout the community. \nThis event is the first of a series of Community Paint sessions\, to be hosted at the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center (6918 Torresdale) on March 23rd from 1-3 PM. Join us to contribute to this Still Life Project and to make your mark on the Tacony neighborhood! \nRegistration is not required.
