SUMMARY:Guided Bike Tour of East Fairmount Park
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history and hidden gems of East Fairmount Park on this guided bike tour.\n\nDATE\nSunday\, May 18 \n\n\n\nTIME\n9:30 am – 12:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nLloyd Hall \n1 Boathouse Row\nPhiladelphia PA 19130 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and experienced bike tour guide Graham Robb on an eight-mile\, all-levels bike ride of East Fairmount Park on Sunday\, May 18 from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. \nThe guided bike ride will highlight the history\, hidden gems\, and stories of interesting places in East Fairmount Park. Stops include the birthplace of the park at Lemon Hill Mansion\, Sedgeley Porter’s House — a little-known or seen house that is the first Gothic Revival building in the US\, Hatfield House\, John Coltrane’s House\, the Discovery Center\, Smith Playhouse\, as well as many of the park’s beautiful colonial-era mansions. Graham is a great storyteller who will share many perspectives on our park’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Graham Robb is a “retired” lawyer who enjoys biking\, hiking\, gardening and learning anything new.  When he is not officiating high school sports he volunteers much of his time with various organizations including Habitat for Humanity for whom he leads teams of volunteers on builds around the world.  A lifelong resident of Philadelphia\, Graham is something of a history and genealogy buff – having traced his Philadelphia ancestors back to the 1680s – and loves sharing past and current stories about his favorite city. \nTICKET PRICE: FREE** in honor of Love Your Park Week. Donations appreciated. \n**We are proud to be able to offer these events for free. However\, there is limited capacity for all of our bike tours. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend. \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe bike ride is roughly eight miles (moderate exertion). Most of the ride is flat; however\, there will be some hilly sections.\nThis event is BYOB….as in\, bring your own bike (and helmet!). No bike? No problem! We’re meeting right next to Wheel Fun Bike Rentals (open\, weather-permitting).\nEveryone must wear a helmet at all times. Riders who arrive without a helmet will not be permitted to join the tour.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 14 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms available at the start/end of the tour but not in the middle so please plan accordingly.\nThe bike ride visits the places listed above but does not go inside.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\nSpace is limited for this tour and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate. Repeat no-shows may not be able to register for future free events. \n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the Lloyd Hall lot at Waterworks Drive. Additional limited parking can be found in the Lemon Hill area / Sedgley Drive\, and in the small lot at the far end of Boathouse Row. As always\, do not leave valuables in your car. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Art Museum Drive–a quarter-mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at the art museum – also a quarter-mile bike from the start. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \nThis event will take place in light rain. In the event of heavy rain or other severe conditions\, the event will be canceled or rescheduled.

SUMMARY:Girls' High Library Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The Girls’ High Library was once a vibrant hub of learning\, creativity\, and inspiration. However\, it has been closed since 2013. Its research materials still include World Book Encyclopedias and a physical card catalog. There is no access to digital books\, electronic research materials\, periodicals\, and other critical technological resources to ensure that our students can excel and compete academically. Despite our school’s successes and strengths\, our students cannot effectively engage with their present education and prepare for life after graduation without a library and a technologically accessible resource center. \nThis fundraiser aims to restore the library to its former glory while incorporating modern resources to empower current and future students. We aim to provide a state-of-the-art library and resource center staffed with librarians so Girls’ High girls can thrive. And now\, there are three ways you can support\, including our Library Fundraiser planned for Sunday\, May 18th.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad\,” with Andrew Diemer\, professor of history at Towson University and author of Vigilance: The Life of William Still\, Father of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Underground Railroad has long been cloaked in legend\, with that legend only growing over time as filmmakers and novelists have provided their own takes on it and old houses have been claimed to have concealed areas that hid fugitive slaves. Local historians eagerly trace out the tracks of this railroad\, identifying its “stations” and “stationmasters” and “conductors\,” but other professional historians remain skeptical of such claims. \nHear Underground Railroad fact sorted from fiction\, and learn about Philadelphia’s pivotal role as a center of efforts to free people from bondage\, when historian Andrew Diemer comes to the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. \nDrawing heavily from his biography of William Still\, the leader of Philadelphia abolitionist group who helped well over 600 enslaved people reach freedom\, Professor Diemer will discuss the origins and operations of the Underground Railroad. He’ll talk about how people escaped from slavery\, who helped them\, and how Underground Railroad activists dealt with a political and legal system that favored slavecatchers. You’ll learn about the relationship that Black activists like Still and his ally Harriet Tubman had with white conspirators\, many of them Quakers. \nDiemer will discuss the life of Still\, a free-born son of parents who had escaped from slavery\, and how he came to become a pivotal figure in Philadelphia’s organized defense of fugitive slaves\, the Vigilance Committee. You’ll learn how Still kept meticulous records of his efforts to aid fugitive slaves and then drew from those records in writing his monumental 1872 history The Underground Railroad\, which brought to life the stories of hundreds of fugitives who had fled to Philadelphia and described how the fugitives themselves were the Underground Railroad’s engine. \nIt’s a talk that will bring to life a chapter of history that too many have sought to bury or obscure. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: “Resurrection of Henry Box Brown\,” an illustration from William Still’s 1872 book The Underground Railroad. (New York Public Library Schomberg Center.)

SUMMARY:Night Music presents Bach Family Salon Concert
DESCRIPTION:Night Music\, a period-instrument chamber ensemble\, will present “‘Ich bin ein Berliner’: Music from the Court of Frederick the Great” at Powel House\, 244 S. 3rd Street\, on Wednesday\, May 21. Pre-concert talk by musicologist Dr. Ellen Exner (The Juilliard School) at 6:30 PM\, concert at 7:00 PM. Featuring Karen Dekker\, violin\, Steven Zohn\, flute\, Heather Miller Lardin\, viola da gamba\, and John Walthausen\, harpsichord. \nThe finest among eighteenth-century composers wrote music not only for entertainment\, but also to educate and inspire those who paid their salaries. In “Ich bin ein Berliner\,” Night Music invites audiences to a multifaceted experience of musical life at the Berlin court of Frederick the Great of Prussia – including an opportunity to connect with the musicians over a mid-concert reception (with jelly donuts\, naturally!) \nAs an avid music lover and staunch supporter of the arts\, Frederick played the flute and composed. Night Music’s program highlights the king’s musical circle\, including his sister Anna Amalia\, his flute teacher and other court musicians\, and several members of the Bach family. Featured is the dramatic trio sonata from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Musical Offering\, the linchpin of an epic collection based on a fugue subject that Frederick himself presented to Bach. \nTickets required; “Pay what you can”: suggested donation $25 for General Admission\, $50 for Premium Seating. Purchase tickets here. \nAudiences describe Night Music’s concerts in the historic ballroom of Powel House as “a rejuvenating and delightful evening” and “a wonderful performance in the perfect setting.” \nNight Music\, now in its 10th season\, is a period-instrument chamber ensemble based in the greater Philadelphia area. Its repertoire centers on the Classical and early Romantic periods (roughly 1750–1850)\, highlighting excellent yet seldom-heard music by composers both familiar and obscure. The ensemble’s mission is to explore this repertoire with audiences in Philadelphia and beyond.
