SUMMARY:Defying Displacement: Book Talk and Conversation with Andrew Lee
DESCRIPTION:Join the us for this book talk and conversation on Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, a new book by AK Press.\n\n\nCities around the world are in the midst of a profound transformation as the wealthy price out the remnants of the urban working class\, especially people of color. Displacement is neither accidental or inevitable. It happens because a whole range of people and institutions profit handsomely. Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, focused on the US but informed by global examples\, investigates gentrification from the perspective of the people fighting it\, members of communities whose survival is threatened by some of the most powerful institutions on the planet. \nJoin the Penn Institute for Urban Research and the Weitzman School’s Department of City and Regional Planning for this book talk and conversation on Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, a new book by AK Press. The book highlights activists and residents in struggle against displacement and how they are charting the way forward to affordable and sustainable cities run by the people who inhabit them. \nAndrew Lee\, author and activist\, will be joined in conversation with Akira Drake Rodriguez\, Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning. \nAndrew Lee has been involved with grassroots anti-displacement campaigns in San José\, California. He currently lives in Philadelphia\, where he continues to work on similar issues. He has written for Yes! Magazine\, Teen Vogue\, and The Progressive and serves as Managing Editor for The Anti-Racism Daily. \nAkira Drake Rodriguez is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design. Her research examines the ways that disenfranchised groups re-appropriate their marginalized spaces in the city to gain access to and sustain urban political power. She is the author of Diverging Space for Deviants: The Politics of Atlanta’s Public Housing (UGA Press\, 2021)\, which explores how both the politics of public housing planning and race in Atlanta created a politics of resistance within public housing developments.

SUMMARY:Outdoors Online: Composting 101
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual workshop to learn all about composting with Gwenn Nolan\, founder of Mother Compost. \nWhether you are brand new to the practice or have been making gardening gold for a while\, this workshop will help you become a more successful home composter. Packed with helpful information\, this one-hour workshop will include time at the end for questions. \nAbout the instructor: \nMother Compost was founded in 2018 by Gwenn Nolan with a goal of making composting simple and easy for her fellow Main Line residents. Being a mother herself\, she was frequently frustrated by the amount of food waste her household created and recognized that her pile in the backyard couldn’t handle it all. In addition\, she knew many people would love to compost but were short on the time\, space or energy needed to turn their food scraps into fertilizer. \nThis is a virtual event. The Zoom link will be shared in the confirmation email.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Gallery Talk with 1838 Black Metropolis
DESCRIPTION:Join the curators of Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers\, and 1838 Black Metropolis co-founders Morgan Lloyd and Michiko Quinones for an in-depth look at some of the compelling stories from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) archives. HSP’s newest exhibit highlights themes of Black self-determination and leadership from the 1770s onward in the abolition movement of the Mid-Atlantic region. Drawing from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (PAS) collection and commemorating the 250th anniversary of its founding\, the exhibit refocuses attention on abolition as a global Black-led political movement championed by the PAS. Through an assembly of primary source documents\, dive deeper into the family\, community\, and freedom for future generations that were key drivers for Black abolitionists in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Morgan and Quinones guide visitors through history during this free public event.

SUMMARY:California Dreamin’ with Stolpman Vineyards – March 19th (Tria Wash West)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Pete Stolpman \nOver 20 years ago\, Tom Stolpman discovered what he believes to be one of the greatest viticultural sites on Earth. Hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast\, on a rare Limestone outcropping and unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind\, a unique land naturally suited to grow Syrah and Roussanne grapes came to be what we now know as Stolpman Vineyards \nIn 2009\, Tom’s son Peter joined the family business after working in various aspects of wine distribution. Stolpman Vineyards has now grown to produce several cuveés. They are committed to preserving their natural environment through conscious and dry farming\, as well as sustainable employment to help preserve the integrity of such stunning Syrah\, Grenache\, Chenin\, and more! \nIt is a pleasure to have Peter join us at Tria for this special one-night-only Meet the Winemaker as we dive headfirst into six special wines that define what it means to be Stolpman. \nCome with an open mind and palate. As always\, tasty Tria snacks will be served\, and we encourage you to join us for Tria’s Happier Hour from 4 to 6 pm before class! \nBottles will be available for sale after the class. \nDetails \nWednesday\, March 19\, 2025 \n6:30 – 8:00 pm \nTria Wash West\, 1137 Spruce Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107 \n$75 per guest
