SUMMARY:Vegan Jollof Rice Food Demo
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic cultural experience that highlights the richness of West African food. Cooking tips and taste testing!\n\n\nThere has been a longstanding debate about “the best jollof rice” among West Africans. This friendly dispute centers the richness of West African food and cultural pride. \nJollof rice is something of a national dish in Nigeria\, Senegal\, and Ghana. In the rest of West Africa\, Jollof rice is the main sought-out dish at every party and event. What makes Jollof rice so unique is its multitude of flavors and distinct versions from each country. No Jollof rice is the same in West Africa! The recipe is always open to interpretation. \nWatta Kesselly\, a native of Liberia in West Africa\, will demonstrate her veganized version of this popular dish that she so enjoyed growing up. Attendees will learn cooking tips and key vegan seasonings that are bound to replicate the cultural aesthetics of Jollof Rice. The Jollof will be paired with another West African staple food\, plantains! \nThis is a must-attend cultural experience. Come share the love of Jollof! \n \nWatta Kesselly began with American Vegan Society (AVS) as a food demonstrator at the American Vegan Center (AVC) in 2022 and was invited to join AVS staff as AVC Events and Cuisine Manager in Summer 2023. Watta is a food enthusiast who brings a wealth of knowledge about behavioral health\, artistic creations\, and teaching. Watta has a master’s degree in education from Temple University.

In accordance with our mission to protect our community\, we will require masks and proof of vaccination for entry. For community members unable to be vaccinated due to medical conditions\, on-site rapid COVID-19 tests will be provided by Trans Art Mart.\n– Reparations: As part of our commitment to supporting our community\, there is a suggested entry fee of $5 for the event\, though no one is turned away for lack of funds. A percentage of the proceeds from this fee will go toward community-run reparation groups that support Black trans people in accessing housing and cars\, furthering our dedication to equity and justice.\n– Harm Reduction: Trans Art Mart will also have Narcan and fentanyl testing strips onsite for attendees to access\, as one of our core beliefs is having access to life-saving medication and safer using materials. \nTrans Art Mart’s Winter Trans Art Market is not only a craft market; we aim to cultivate an experience that celebrates the diverse voices and talents within the trans and gender-expansive community. \nJoin us on December 10th for a day of creativity\, community\, and celebration. Together\, we can continue to create a space where trans joy is central. \nAbout Trans Art Mart:\nTrans Art Mart is a community-driven organization with a mission to create safer\, collaborative\, and creative spaces that increase visibility for local trans\, non-binary\, and gender-expansive artists and makers. Through our events and initiatives\, we aim to empower and uplift the voices of the trans and gender-expansive community in the arts.

I was fortunate to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and have a career in the fashion industry which took me all over the US and around the world. It also showed me the real fashion industry and opened my eyes to the giant sustainability and ethical problems which I didn’t want to be a part of. Creating a brand that is part of the solution is my why” -Carla \neddys brand was founded with the idea to make necessary things without making unnecessary waste. In searching for the ideal fiber to make our garments\, we realized that the ideal fibers are the ones that already exist\, the ones that have already been grown\, dyed\, knit up\, and most importantly\, already loved. Our outfits are made with yarn from second-hand sweaters that are rescued from landfill. They are unraveled\, washed\, and re-knit into our adorable durable items. \nwww.eddysbrand.com \nwww.instagram.com/eddys_brand (@eddys_brand)

SUMMARY:Reforming Philadelphia\, 1682–2022
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the evolution of Philadelphia’s government over nearly 350 years.\n\n\nOver the course of its nearly 350 year history\, Philadelphia’s government has undergone significant change. Join us for an exploration of this history with political scientist Richardson Dilworth as he unravels the evolution of the city’s government. \nDiscover the stories of reformers who reshaped Philadelphia’s purpose and governance\, challenging the established “corrupt machine” and vying for control through elections. Dive into pivotal moments\, from the 1885 city charter overhaul to the emergence of the Republican machine and the city’s shift to a Democratic stronghold in the 1950s\, marked by profound racial transitions. \nFocusing on the 20th and 21st centuries\, Dilworth delves into the terms of influential mayors like Rizzo\, Goode\, Rendell\, Street\, Nutter\, and Kenney. Uncover the intricate dance of power and resistance\, as Philadelphia’s political history and reform cycles offer a compelling framework applicable to cities nationwide. \nDilworth will also discuss the importance of HSP’s collection to his research process. \n \nThis lecture directly follows HSP’s 2023 Annual Meeting. HSP members should register for both the meeting and lecture here. \n \n\n\nSpeaker’s Bio: \nRichardson Dilworth is a professor of politics and head of the Department of Politics at Drexel University. Dilworth’s research and teaching focuses on American urban political development\, urban environmental policy\, and community economic development. He is the author of several books\, including Reforming Philadelphia\, 1682–2022\, the editor-in-chief of the Oxford Bibliographies in Urban Studies\, and the editor or coeditor of nine books. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, founded in 1824\, is one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents. We are proud to serve as Philadelphia’s Library of American History\, with over 21 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images encompassing centuries of US history. Through educator workshops\, research opportunities\, public programs\, and lectures throughout the year\, we strive to make history relevant and exhilarating to all.
