SUMMARY:Opening Night Exhibit: Mapping the Wissahickon
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 2 | 5:00 – 7:00 PMChestnut Hill Conservancy | 8708 Germantown Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19118Free and open to the public | Suggested $10 donation \nJoin us for the opening night of Mapping the Wissahickon: From the Colonial Era to an Evolving Watershed\, a new archives exhibition that explores the Wissahickon Valley’s changing landscape and the preservation efforts that continue to shape its future. \nFeaturing maps\, plans\, and publications spanning over three centuries\, this self-guided exhibit traces four key eras in the valley’s history—from early industry and public land acquisition to the development of the urban park and the rise of long-term land stewardship. \nOne featured map shows a 1955 plan from Studies of Crossings of the Wissahickon Valley\, created during the post–World War II housing boom. As open land in Roxborough and Andorra gave way to new housing\, planners proposed nine road crossings—bold horizontal lines now frozen in time on paper. None were ever built\, reflecting the growing push to protect the valley from increased development. \nStop by during Chestnut Hill’s First Friday Arts & Eats to view the exhibit\, explore the story of the Wissahickon through historical maps and guides\, and learn more about the people and efforts that continue to shape the landscape today. \nImage from the Chestnut Hill Conservancy Archives.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Kelly Kozma Solo //"Care Instructions" Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening for 2 exciting exhibitions with opportunities to collect artwork from all 3 floors.\n\n\nPlease join us as we celebrate two exciting exhibtions centered around reuse and sustainable art practices. \nArtists will be in attendance with opportunities to view and collect artwork from 3 floors of the Paradigm Arts Building. \nKelly Kozma: Watch Me Backflip \nEntering her 14th year working with Paradigm\, Kozma will be unveiling a massive culmination documenting her career and process-intensive work. The artist is celebrating her personal relationships\, archiving methods\, and resilience with a massive 22-foot-wide installation comprised of 35\,000 hand-stitched circles cut from various repurposed materials. The cosmic work titled Iguana & Myrrh\, Magma & Reef\, consists of everyday objects like greeting cards\, food packaging\, and thread expertly woven and given new life as bursts of color and pattern in the largest scale the artist has ever attempted. Kozma is purposefully engaging in a minimal-waste practice where even paper scraps and loose threads from the installation will find new life within over 20 mixed media works that will call to the large assemblage. As she stitches these lovingly collected pieces\, Kozma creates connections between the people in her life and the objects she interacts with\, inspiring mindfulness against overconsumption and emotional apathy. \nPlease email info@paradigm-gallery.com if you wish to be added to Kelly Kozma’s digital collector preview list for her upcoming exhibition. You may also submit your request HERE. \nCare Instructions: Work by Vanessa Barragão\, Allison May Kiphuth\, Nayan & Venus\, and RAIR Philly \nParadigm Gallery + Studio is pleased to present Care Instructions\, a collection of artists and makers across three continents that incorporate elements of reuse\, recycling\, and environmental awareness in their work. With intentions for sustainability\, each of these artists has developed their practice to include discarded or natural materials while engaging in active research and preservation efforts. These meticulously constructed versions of coral reefs\, woodlands\, and aviary populations inspire the obligation to take care of the environment and combat single-use material culture. The exhibition is a showcase on how powerful design and material reuse in craftsmanship can be aesthetically pleasing. The artists aren’t just actively charging the work to spread a message\, they’re putting the message into practice and showing the spectacular results. \nPlease email info@paradigm-gallery.com if you wish to be added to the digital collector preview list for the upcoming exhibition. \nThe reception is free and open to all. All artwork will be available to collect during the opening. Please email info@paradigm-gallery for any inquiries prior to the receptions. \n \nAlso on display: \nArtwork by Eustace Mamba \nArtwork by Alain Jean-Baptiste \nRead the press release here \nArtwork by Katherine Fraser \nRead the press release here \nand many more!

SUMMARY:Producers' Forum with Ashley Tyner and William Tyner
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Producers’ Forum screening of the People’s Way with Ashley Tyner and William Tyner\n\n\nThe People’s Way by Ashley Tyner and William Tyner (USA\, 2025\, 75 minutes) \nAt the intersection of East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis\, three community organizers—Jeanelle Austin\, Toshira Garraway\, and Robin Wonsley— embark on various and interweaving journeys after George Floyd’s murder to care for their communities\, find inner healing\, and forge a path towards Black liberation. Each one does this in their own way\, whether demanding accountability for the murder of a community member by police\, building a community-centered approach to public safety\, or commemorating and preserving a public space for recovery from police violence. \nAshley Tyner is a writer\, filmmaker\, and Special Projects Editor at i-D Magazine\, where she works to create space to amplify marginalized voices in the worlds of art and culture. She writes and produces across print\, audio\, and video formats\, with a focus on designing editorial experiences that translate into community events and service-driven initiatives. \nWilliam Tyner is an anthropologist\, filmmaker\, and UX Researcher at Google. William is also the recipient of the 2018-2019 Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship\, where he studied the intersection of civil society and technology in post-communist Romania.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED Garden Walk and Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled for May 3 owing to rainy weather \nCertified in Nature Journal Education through the Wild Wonder Foundation\, Meg Lemieur will teach a class on the practice of nature journaling. She defines nature journaling as collecting and organizing observations\, questions\, connections\, and explanations about the natural world that surrounds us on paper using words\, pictures\, and numbers. You don’t need to be an artist\, writer\, or a naturalist to begin. In this class\, you will be guided to look closely\, notice more\, and learn to notate the wild world at Bartram’s Garden. \nTeaming up with Lady Danni\, a passionate forager\, and member of the American Herbalist Guild and the American Botanical Council\, you’ll be guided through observations of the wonders that live throughout the garden and given wisdom from their many years of experience building and being in relationship with the natural world. \nThis class is a creative & inclusive way to engage with the great variety of plants and animals in the garden on a closer\, more personal level. Nature journaling is meditative and helps us slow down in the midst of busy schedules and a bustling modern world. As you know\, nature gives many life lessons and who knows- we might even learn something about ourselves in the process.

SUMMARY:LoST in Philadelphia National Historical Park - a Smart-guided Bikeway Tour
DESCRIPTION:Along with American history buffs\, cycle tourists will enjoy this national treasure chock full of scenic vistas\, and great bikeways.\n\n\nLoST in Philadelphia National Historical Park\n– a Smart-guided Cycle Tour\n \nAlong with American history buffs\, cycle tourists will enjoy this national treasure chock full of scenic vistas\, and great bikeways. \n \nThe 3\,500-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park is amazing to explore\, especially on a bike tour! Visitors can peek into American history with General George Washington’s headquarters and an encampment of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. \n \nThis is also home to the National Memorial Arch\, modeled after Rome’s Arch of Titus. Dedicated in 1917\, this grand structure memorializes the triumphant arrival of General Washington and the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-78. \n \nNatural beauty also adorns the tour route. Along with the scenic park grounds the Schuylkill River and Perkiomen Creek provide ample waterside vistas to take in along the way. The tour also visits Lower Perkiomen Valley Park\, a popular 107-acre area for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. \n \nThe tour is a Long or Short Tour (LoST) – it comes in two lengths – 15 and 31 miles. Both options explore Valley Forge National Historical Park. The longer tour is more in-depth and travels further along the Schuylkill River Bikeway. SUMMARY:Paul Gripper Community Paint Day
DESCRIPTION:He was a beloved basketball coach and a father figure to many young people in the community.\n\n\nA winning submission of our public mural application process\, this project honors the life of Paul “Unk P” Gripper\, a North Philadelphia community member who inspired and mentored young men—many of whom garnered entrance and scholarship to college—through the game of basketball. Paul was described as a larger-than-life figure known for his loud\, braggadocious personality. He embodied the spirit of Philadelphia—always cracking jokes and having fun\, often silly but uplifting. Paul had a heart as big as his stature and was considered “a teddy bear with street smarts” by those closest to him. He often wore sneakers or Timberland boots. He was a beloved basketball coach and a father figure to many young people in the community. The mural\, located at 2600 Ridge Avenue\, is designed by artist Nilé Livingston and will be produced by Keisha Whatley. It will be dedicated in June 2025. \n \nIn case of rain the event is moving to Vox Populi 319 N 11th St #3\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107
