I’ve loved clothes and playing dress-up since forever. I was fortunate to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and have a career in the fashion industry which took me all over the US and around the world. It also showed me the real fashion industry and opened my eyes to the giant sustainability and ethical problems which I didn’t want to be a part of. Creating a brand that is part of the solution is my why” -Carla \neddys brand was founded with the idea to make necessary things without making unnecessary waste. In searching for the ideal fiber to make our garments\, we realized that the ideal fibers are the ones that already exist\, the ones that have already been grown\, dyed\, knit up\, and most importantly\, already loved. Our outfits are made with yarn from second-hand sweaters that are rescued from landfill. They are unraveled\, washed\, and re-knit into our adorable durable items. \nwww.eddysbrand.com \nwww.instagram.com/eddys_brand (@eddys_brand)

SUMMARY:Reforming Philadelphia\, 1682–2022
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the evolution of Philadelphia’s government over nearly 350 years.\n\n\nOver the course of its nearly 350 year history\, Philadelphia’s government has undergone significant change. Join us for an exploration of this history with political scientist Richardson Dilworth as he unravels the evolution of the city’s government. \nDiscover the stories of reformers who reshaped Philadelphia’s purpose and governance\, challenging the established “corrupt machine” and vying for control through elections. Dive into pivotal moments\, from the 1885 city charter overhaul to the emergence of the Republican machine and the city’s shift to a Democratic stronghold in the 1950s\, marked by profound racial transitions. \nFocusing on the 20th and 21st centuries\, Dilworth delves into the terms of influential mayors like Rizzo\, Goode\, Rendell\, Street\, Nutter\, and Kenney. Uncover the intricate dance of power and resistance\, as Philadelphia’s political history and reform cycles offer a compelling framework applicable to cities nationwide. \nDilworth will also discuss the importance of HSP’s collection to his research process. \n \nThis lecture directly follows HSP’s 2023 Annual Meeting. HSP members should register for both the meeting and lecture here. \n \n\n\nSpeaker’s Bio: \nRichardson Dilworth is a professor of politics and head of the Department of Politics at Drexel University. Dilworth’s research and teaching focuses on American urban political development\, urban environmental policy\, and community economic development. He is the author of several books\, including Reforming Philadelphia\, 1682–2022\, the editor-in-chief of the Oxford Bibliographies in Urban Studies\, and the editor or coeditor of nine books. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, founded in 1824\, is one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents. We are proud to serve as Philadelphia’s Library of American History\, with over 21 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images encompassing centuries of US history. Through educator workshops\, research opportunities\, public programs\, and lectures throughout the year\, we strive to make history relevant and exhilarating to all. SUMMARY:Lansdale Holiday Lights Ride
DESCRIPTION:This will be a slow roll group bike ride of streets in and around downtown Lansdale to see holiday lights put out by the locals. \nBike Helmets Are REQUIRED. \nWe will meet outside Round Guys/Backyard Beans at about 7PM with the ride to start no later than 7:15. \nBike Route will be no more than 6 miles and will be mostly on residential streets with low traffic. Our pace will be slow\, with no one getting left behind. \nBike lights are encouraged! We want this to be festive\, but we also want to be visible to drivers. Be creative with your lights! Horns\, sleigh bells\, cowbells and other noise makers would be great. \nDress in warm layers as the weather dictates. I cannot emphasize the importance of warm gloves for this ride but be sure you also practice riding with gloves before the event. Shifting and breaking your bike may be very different wearing gloves. \nBe sure your bike is in good working order in advance of this ride. \nAll riders are responsible for their own safety on this ride. Anyone under the Age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. \nBad weather or if streets are icy from earlier rain or snow will cancel this event. \nSafety is always our first consideration. \nBike Helmets Are REQUIRED during the ride. If you want to bring a festive hat – great\, but during the ride you MUST wear a bike helmet.

SUMMARY:Second Thursday at NextFab: Repair Fair
DESCRIPTION:We will be welcoming the Philly Fixers Guild’s Repair Fair back to our spaces to help you fix and repair\, fix\, and assemble your tricky items. Why replace it when you can repair it? This urban volunteer repair outfit will help you fix your stuff\, free of charge\, and they’re ready for the challenge. Got tangled jewelry\, IKEA furniture that needs assembling\, or a vacuum cleaner that’s on the fritz? Sit down with one of their volunteers and they’ll help you hands-on with fixing it. While they do have some limits\, they encourage a read of their ground rules before bringing in your items. Reserve a spot here. \nGuidelines: \nTheir talented volunteer fixers love the challenge of repairing everyday things. However\, we have some limits and guidelines so things can run a bit more smoothly: \n\nGuests are required to stay with their item and participate in the repair (dropping an item off for them to work on defeats the purpose of the Repair Fair)\nIf you already know your item needs a particular replacement part\, order it early and bring it with you to the fair\nAs long as you can carry the item in\, we will do our best to get it repaired\nThere will\, of course\, be some things that cannot reasonably be fixed or might need a part ordered. In these cases\, a fixer will recommend the best course of action. Usually\, they will be able to supply you with info on part numbers and repair steps so you can complete the repair at home on your own!\n\nCan’t make it to the Repair Fair? They don’t want you to miss out on repairing your favorite possessions! For that reason\, their “ASK A FIXER” email link can be used with details of your broken item. A Fixer can then offer some advice and guidance on how to make the repairs on your own time. \nDisclaimer: The Philly Fixers Guild exists to help people repair their personal items and educate the community in general troubleshooting\, diagnosis\, and repair. The guild volunteers are not necessarily professionals or licensed in any way. Any repair work undertaken at a fair is done as a “Good Samaritan” effort and is for educational purposes only. No repair made at a Repair Fair carries any warranty\, promise of reliability\, or guarantee of safety. \nRolling tours of NextFab will be available\, and light drinks and refreshments will be served. \nWhat are Second Thursdays? \nFor 17 years\, the Crane Arts Building has hosted monthly art exhibitions\, performances\, and openings on the Second Thursday of every month. Similar to First Fridays in Old City\, but not wanting to compete\, Second Thursdays was created to highlight the creative community of the North Philadelphia neighborhood – and well it stuck! \nAmerican St. is becoming a booming street for artists\, makers\, and creatives of all types\, and we invite you to come out to be a part of this. Between the Crane Arts Building and the Clay Studio\, the NextFab building at 1800 North houses eight businesses that will also be opening their doors on the second Thursday of every month. At 1800 N. American St. the creative work ranges from restoring historic neon\, sourcing salvaged materials\, empowering artists\, building bicycles\, supporting artisan businesses\, a gorgeous floral market\, and a restaurant mixing up amazing cocktails. All are welcome to this open house-style event! \nWhile at the 1800 N. American St. building be sure to check out our neighbors:\n\nThe Resource Exchange\nSor Ynez\nKeystone Bicycle Co\nBeaty American Salvage\nCenter for Creative Works

SUMMARY:2nd Thursday Reception for Between Us is a Namelessness
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, December 14\, from 6 – 9 pm for a free reception for Between Us is a Namelessness. \nThe three artists in Between Us is a Namelessness\, Megan Biddle\, Julianna Foster\, and Rick Salafia\, all work around the poetics of observation. Through invented tools and observational practices\, each artist proposes methods to record and quantify the intangible. What does measuring the space between oneself and a memory or an idea mean? Through cyclical and repetitive processes\, all three artists engage with nonlinear time and complex relationships to space. Rick Salafia offers a series of ‘Instruments’ ruled to measure absence\, longing\, and subjective distances rather than inches or centimeters. Megan Biddle’s sculptures measure the volume of hollow spaces\, imbuing absence with surface tension\, gravity\, and weight. Julianna Foster engages family archival photos of scientific glacier observatories in Greenland\, offering landscapes that also speak to the inner worlds of ‘objective’ observers. Throughout\, shifts in scale offer disorientation from the familiar\, posing challenges to the concept of detached (neutral/objective) observation in favor of rich relationships to emptiness and a suggestion of a negative space which is always/already full.
