SUMMARY:Garbage Patch: Show of Art giving life to old materials
DESCRIPTION:The Craft Cove and STITCH AND DESTROY are showcasing artists working with reclaimed/reused/refuse materials for a curated show of work.\n\n\nSTITCH AND DESTROY & The Craft Coven present: Garbage Patch \nThis curated show of work highlights local artists working with reclaimed and recyled materials. Come out to show your support of these innovative artists\, while also highlighting the necessity to combat issues that contribute to global waste. \nThanks to our sponsors at Otto Distilling located in South Philadelphia\, and Jackie Nevin our resident cocktail specialist\, we will have a complimentary rum mixed drink available. Arrive early to be sure you get one of these tasty treats! \nHaven and Cassie will have their free button making stations setup along with magazines\, paper and paint markers to make the buttons of your dreams! \nWe will be welcome a one night pop up by Christina is a self-taught designer just getting started with her first brand: The Death of Me. Her work is interested in all things beautiful with a strong responsibility to community\, sustainability\, and looking good to feel good. The tops featured in this show were made using reclaimed materials and a slow fashion approach with the goal of creating one of kind pieces that (hopefully) scratch some of the itches living in our brains. \nA statement from the curators :  \nGarbage Patch (2024)  \nA collaboration between The Craft Coven & STITCH AND DESTROY; The title of this exhibition references The Great Pacific GarbagePatch; a floating plastic pollution island\, which has been concentrated via ocean currents\, in the Pacific ocean between California and Hawaii. This tragic show of human refuse is a growing mass currently larger than the size of Texas. \nWith a nod to this floating man made island\, this group exhibition showcases work reflecting on the theme of upcycling and recycling. The showcase includes pieces from 14 local Philadelphia artists who are using reclaimed materials in their work.

SUMMARY:Community Gatherings – October 2024
DESCRIPTION:Faith and Civic Engagement\n\n\nCommunity Gatherings serve as a place for our members (and our wider network) to connect with each other\, learn about the state of the environment here in Pennsylvania\, receive updates on our work\, and meet in regional cohorts. Join us from 7PM-8:30PM. We will have an hour of programming followed by 30 minutes for regional breakouts moderated by PA IPL team members. \nThis month\, we will discuss how faith calls us to be civically engaged. How can we start to make changes by asking questions about our community? Given our mutual interdependence\, how do our faiths call us to live in the world? What might our world look like if we started conversations from a place of community and radical acceptance? Let’s come together to explore the ways in which our faith traditions call us to engage in the civic process. \n \nAttendance for the regional breakouts is optional – it is designed to provide a time for connection\, sharing\, and updates. A staff member will be present in each room. This is also a great opportunity for our congregational members to share about upcoming events or things in planning\, ask staff for advice or resources\, and more. The regional breakouts for October are: SouthWest PA\, SouthEast PA\, NorthEast PA\, + Central PA (folks from anywhere else are welcomed to join SouthEast PA).

SUMMARY:Shopping All the Way to the Woods: Rachel S. Gross
DESCRIPTION:From Gore-Tex to do-it-yourself kits\, hear how synthetic fibers have transformed the outdoor industry.\n\n\nJoin us in person or online as historian Rachel Gross\, author of Shopping All the Way to the Woods: How the Outdoor Industry Sold Nature to America\, examines how our changing ideas about nature\, commerce\, and self-identity have shaped the outdoor goods market into a booming\, multi-billion-dollar industry. \n \nGore-Tex and Do-It-Yourself Kits: How Synthetic Fibers Transformed the Outdoor Industry\nOutdoorspeople flipping through the pages of popular magazines such as Backpacker or Field and Stream in the late 1970s would have seen page after page referencing a revolution in materials. This revolution was one of the most tangible ways American consumers experienced the massive technological shift in materials and designs in the late 20th century. There were innumerable changes\, including internal frame packs\, dome tents with telescoping aluminum tent poles\, freeze-dried food\, and more that changed how outdoor recreationists practiced their activities. \nIn popular memory\, the equipment revolution was centered around synthetics but in the 1970s\, do-it-yourself sewing kits were a far bigger phenomenon than Gore-Tex or its cousins. The intertwined relationship between one of the biggest trends of the equipment revolution at that time—which ultimately failed—and another trend that eventually surpassed it shows the surprising evolution of the corporate outdoors. In the balance to make outdoor gear effective and exclusive yet accessible and affordable\, DIY kits and technical synthetics offered different benefits. Consumers loved or hated these new trends\, showing how the outdoors becoming big business played out in the everyday lives of Americans. \nThis event is part of our Fellow in Focus and Science and Society series. Presented by the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry\, the Rohm and Haas Fellow in Focus Lecture series gives the Institute’s scholars an opportunity to present their work to a broad audience interested in history\, science\, and culture. Our Science and Society speaker series explores the history of science embedded in our everyday lives. We invite scientists\, historians\, policymakers\, and educators for engaging\, in-depth conversations that expand our perspectives. \n \nAbout Rachel Gross\nRachel S. Gross is a historian of the outdoor industry and author of Shopping All the Way to the Woods: How the Outdoor Industry Sold Nature to America (Yale University Press\, 2024). She is an assistant professor of history at the University of Colorado Denver where she teaches U.S. environmental\, business\, and public history.
