SUMMARY:Sort-A-Thon Philadelphia 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join FABSCRAP in our Earth Month SORT-A-THON! We will be open for 12-HOURS OF CONTINUOUS SORTING! Sign up for up to 6 hours of sorting!\n\n\nWHAT’S SORT-A-THON? \nSort-A-Thon is FABSCRAP’s 12-hour fabric sorting marathon event\, and we’re recruiting all our FAB friends to come and help sort fabric! Our goal is to sort 5\,000 pounds of textiles across both locations! FABSCRAP will provide meals\, and entertainment – creating an experience similar to a productive party and fundraiser. \nHOW DOES IT WORK? \nParticipants can register for 2-hour sorting blocks and take home 3 pounds of fabric for each 2-hr block they complete. For example\, 4 hours of sorting = 6 pounds of free fabric! So don’t forget to buffer in some time to shop after you’ve completed your final sorting block and redeem your free fabric! \n*Maximum of three\, 2-hour blocks per attendee. \nWHY? \nOn average\, we collect 7\,000 pounds of textile waste at both of our locations each week. We need the help of our volunteers to make a dent in our growing pile of material. Sort-A-Thon is also a perfect opportunity for all of our volunteers to meet and connect! \nCome ready to sort\, eat\, and hang out with our community! It will be a fun-filled day of recycling-related activities. \n \n( Details continued below…) \n\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT… \nDuring each session we will: \n\nWelcome & Train: Overview of FABSCRAP and training where you learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\n\n\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (1 hour 45 minutes)\n\n***Sorting fabric requires the use of sharp scissors and moderate lifting (20-30 lbs.) By registering for a session\, you are confirming that you have read\, understand\, and agree to the volunteer waiver.*** \n***Volunteer Waver Link Here: https://fabscrap.org/volunteerwaiver*** \nTips for a successful volunteer session: \n\nDress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes. Most volunteers sort while standing\, but we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit.\nWe play music but feel free to bring headphones.\nOut of respect for everyone in our community\, if you are feeling ill prior to the event\, we ask that you cancel your ticket and do not attend.\n\n\n\nHere’s our plan for the day\, so you can choose which time blocks will work best for you! \n(breakfast is available) \n9 -11AM: Q&A with FABSCRAP Founder\, Jessica Schreiber \n11 AM -1 PM: Sorter BINGO \n12 PM – 3 PM: Lunch Served * – Sponsored by Kiddo\, a restaurant with a veggie-forward approach! \n1- 3 PM: FABSCRAP TRIVIA \n3 – 5 PM: Musical Tables \n5 – 8 PM: Dinner Served ** \n5-7 PM: Sip & Sort \n7-9 PM: Clean up\, Weigh Out\, and Close Down \n \n(* If attending 11 AM-1 PM\, please plan to eat AFTER your session. SUMMARY:Native Plants of Spring Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:Our highly popular Native Plants Series is available in a new course format. View the prerecorded lectures at your own pace prior to joining Mt. Cuba staff for scheduled onsite garden tours. Please note – attendance to garden tours and exam are required if you are working towards the Ecological Gardening Certificate. As Earth awakens from its winter slumber\, experience the colors\, fragrances\, and rapid progression of spring-flowering native plants. Through lectures and outdoor labs\, learn to identify 60 beautiful and ecologically valuable trees\, shrubs\, and herbaceous perennials. Examine the identifying characteristics of each plant and its preferred growing conditions\, overall size\, and environmental significance. With this knowledge\, make informed plant selections for your spring garden.\nThis program takes place online with separate in-person tours of Mt. Cuba Center’s gardens. Six prerecorded online lectures will be available starting Monday April 1. Three garden tours Saturdays take place April 13\, 27\, May 11.\nOptional Exam: Saturday May 18.\nAbout the Instructors:\nLiz Allen is an Educator at Mt. Cuba Center and a Delaware Master Naturalist with the University of Delaware. She provides gardening consultations to local homeowners and schools who are looking to diversify and improve their landscape value with native plants. Liz is also the grounds manager for a school\, and has converted the entire property to native plants for children to study and enjoy. She also leads groups in invasive removal efforts\, as well as creating public plantings. Liz is passionate about restoring nature’s balance by actively influencing plant communities.\nJay Kratz is a Mt Cuba Center educator. Before coming to Mt Cuba\, he spent twenty years as a college instructor\, and working with his wife at her family business\, Hill House Herb Gardens in Providence\, RI. In addition to being the luckiest boy in the world to spend his days with guests marveling at Mt Cuba’s gardens\, he shares his enthusiasm for native plants outside Mt Cuba’s gates as the co-horticulturist and Rancocas chapter leader for the Native Plant Society of NJ\, and as a native plant garden designer and landscaper.

SUMMARY:Ghost Signs of Old City
DESCRIPTION:See ghost signs and learn of the businesses behind them\, from lettered signs on building facades to those embedded in the sidewalks\n\n\n“Ghost Signs” are faded and often forgotten business and advertisement signs\, usually found on the front or sides of buildings. The effects of decades of weather\, neglect\, and cover-up attempts have diminished their eye-catching glow\, but they still provide a window into the past\, revealing generations of a building’s history and uncovering fascinating stories of our city. These signs can be found all over Philadelphia\, but a large concentration of them are in the Old City neighborhood. \nJoin Hidden City as we explore a range of ghost signs from hand-painted lettering on building facades (some even at eye level) to those embedded in the sidewalks. Businesses discussed will include nautical instruments\, department stores\, restaurant supply companies\, tanners\, printers\, brush makers\, and so many more! \nMeet at the northeast corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets: 243 Chestnut St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106. This tour requires significant walking on uneven brick and slate sidewalks of the Old City neighborhood; proper footwear is a must. \nTour guide Jordan Keiffer has been documenting Philadelphia’s ghost signs on the Instagram page @phillyghostsigns since 2019. His goal is to connect people to the forgotten stories of these faded signs through historic narratives and supplemental images. His work was featured in a special exhibition on ghost signs at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia in 2021. A native of Montgomery County\, PA\, Keiffer is a proud Temple University alum. He enjoys long runs and bike rides through the city that allow him to periodically check in on ghost signs. \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Alyssa Shea at ashea@hiddencityphila.org.

SUMMARY:Food & stories of Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Haitian Sos Pwa (Black Bean Sauce)\, rice\, sautéed mushrooms\, and fried plantains with stories inspired by Haitian author\, Edwidge Danticat.\n\n\nHaiti is lauded as the First Black Republic for taking its independence in 1804. \nWhitney Frederic of It’s Seasoned is making us a classic Haitian dish\, vegan-style\, with fried plantains on the side. She lovingly follows in the footsteps of her foremothers. \nWe will pair this delicious food with the writing of Haitian author\, Edwidge Danticat. Danticat writes beautifully about what it means to be “obliged to bear witness when countries of origin are suffering from violence\, oppression\, poverty\, and tragedy.” \nEnjoy food\, music\, and “reflect on art and exile.”
