SUMMARY:Pockets of Light: A New Interactive Public Arts Installation along the Delaware River Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:In order to grow\, we all need a little light. The Delaware River Waterfront Trail provides just that—for both people and nature. Through a series of hand- and machine-sewn artworks\, artist Julie “Juicebox” Woodard transforms post-consumer waste into depictions of the Delaware River and native plants found along the waterfront. “Wayfinding waterscapes” found on the Delaware pathway guide you to installations at four public piers accompanied by site-specific interactives created by experience designer Eric the Puzzler. \nThrough eye-catching artwork\, unique puzzles\, local natural history\, and participation prizes\, the creators aim to enhance the nurturing effects of the waterfront and encourage you to forge a deeper connection with your surroundings. This project spans from Race Street Pier to Pier 68. Start by finding one of the plant installations on the piers\, or locate one of the 9 “wayfinding waterscapes” along the trail. \nThis project was commissioned by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation.

SUMMARY:The Clay Studio hosts memorial event “Celebration of Life | Raymond Rorke”
DESCRIPTION:The Clay Studio presents “Raymond Rorke: In Memoriam\,” a collection of ceramic works created by the late Raymond Rorke. A beloved friend and graphic designer at The Clay Studio for six years\, this special exhibition honors the contributions he made to Philadelphia’s ceramic community and features works he created until his recent passing earlier this year. \n“What clay has given me over the years — as have my teachers and students — is a way forward\, where daily awareness and creation can be practiced and deepened.” Rorke once shared. “These days at the studio I’m surrounded by clay in all its glory — from the beginner’s first encounter holding a lump of clay to the master’s skilled transformation of clay into a cultural touchstone — and as I myself work with clay\, I am also on a journey of learning and mentoring in an ever-widening community of clay practitioners.”

SUMMARY:The World Today: The Crisis of Climate-Driven Extinction
DESCRIPTION:A discussion on climate change’s role in biodiversity loss\, and what can be done to reverse course.\n\n\nCanadian and Hawaiian wildfires; a bleached Great Barrier Reef; flooding in Pakistan and Nigeria; drought in Somalia; and devastating Cyclones across Malawi and Mozambique are just some of the recent climate driven natural disasters rearranging and challenging the ecosystems on which we all depend.\n \n \nThe United Nations calls the confluence of climate change\, biodiversity loss\, and pollution a “triple planetary crisis.” A million species are at risk of extinction by 2050. Despite global calls to act\, the world is suffering increasingly severe and often irreversible impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the life they sustain. Is climate driven extinction unavoidable? What can be done to reverse course\, and can we stop biodiversity loss\, global warming\, and planetary pollution concurrently? What happens if we fail?\n \n \nAs part of Penn Climate Week\, Perry World House in collaboration with the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability and the Media; and the Department of Biology will host this urgent discussion of the intersection of biodiversity loss and climate change. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\nErol Akçay is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:Botanical Illustration: Creating a Botanical Sketchbook
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Margaret Saylor\, Artist; Member\, American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators \nThe wonderful natural elements that make up our autumn outdoor world are perfect botanical subjects! We’ll draw or paint new family of specimens each week. You’ll create a sketchbook page based on the week’s topic. Not only will we learn about that week’s botanical theme\, but we’ll see how these subjects fit into the broader realm of contemporary botanical art. Themes will include: flowers\, fungi\, moss\, lichens\, leaves\, seed pods\, gourds\, and fir trees. \nMargaret Saylor is the editor/designer of ASBA’s The Botanical Artist journal. She earned a certificate in botanical art and illustration\, with distinction\, from the NYBG. \nAll levels welcome; some drawing experience helpful but not necessary. We will work in graphite\, Micron pen\, and/or watercolor. A Zoom link and a recommended materials list will be emailed to all participants.

SUMMARY:Tree Planting & Maintenance - Fall 2023
DESCRIPTION:Partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\n\n\nHere at PA IPL a big planting effort is underway\, and we want you to be part of it! \nPA IPL received requests for over 25\,000 trees this Spring! We are excited to partner with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation once again to deliver as many of these requests as possible. Join us for a virtual session on September 19th at 7pm where we will learn \n\nabout the importance of planting native trees\nhow to plant & maintain trees you receive\nand a little more about the mission to plant 10 million trees in PA by 2025\n\nWe can’t wait to see you there – it’s going to be tree-tastic! \n*** \nMarch 31st Program Participant Bios \nKatie Ruth (host): Katie connects humans to the planet\, each other\, and themselves. As Executive Director at Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light\, they are responsible for supporting a volunteer board and small team of staff in cultivating a moral response to climate change that is interfaith\, inclusive\, and intentional. They hold an MA in Public Leadership\, and a BA in Christian theology. Katie is focused on facilitating partnerships between individuals and institutions to promote social change and build community. They are passionate about peacemaking and justice\, rooted in their deep connection to the environment. Their career spans a variety of experience in nonprofit administration\, grassroots organizing and outreach\, and faith-based community services. Katie is involved in several community resilience projects including environmental organizing\, safe shelter\, and the arts. They are an avid reader\, enjoy exploring new places\, and are almost always found with a cup of tea in hand. \nGreg Williams (speaker): Greg Williams was a classroom teacher\, environmental educator\, and administrator during 30 years of his working life. He loved teaching kids about the natural world and how to care for it. At retirement age\, as he was selling his used bookstore in NW Philadelphia\, he was able to help with childcare for his young granddaughter Talula. However\, he was heartbroken to think of the world that she\, and all the kids he taught\, would inherit and felt he needed to take on a “retirement job” of doing something about climate change. After schooling himself and studying what the possibilities were\, his first step was to join a neighborhood group of Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light. Over the last 9 years he served on the Board and found his “calling. ” When he moved to Central PA to be close to other grandchildren he started doing creation care by removing “misplaced” plants\, AKA non-native invasives\, and replacing them with natives. With hundreds of volunteers\, and through a partnership between PA IPL and Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, the collaborative effort has resulted in nearly 35\,000 trees being planted or distributed to others who plant them across Pennsylvania. He especially loves the spiritual exercise of being in the natural world and alert and aware of all the wonders he finds there and is grateful for this opportunity. \n*** \nThere is no fee for this program\, but a suggested $5 donation will help us keep doing this work.

SUMMARY:Skerryvore: A Tale of Terror
DESCRIPTION:In December 1876\, the crew of the remote lighthouse at Skerryvore disappeared. The only witness was a young girl called Mary Campbell. 23 years later\, she is mesmerized so she can recall the mysterious events. But all is not quite as it seems… \nThis story was written as a site specific piece for London’s Old Operating Theatre and explores the gendered ideas of mental illness that were prominent in the late 19th century medical field. Skerryvore explores Mary’s past with the “help” of her doctor who doesn’t know as much as he thinks and his passion for breaking through to her is not as well intentioned as he tells his students it is. What he doesn’t know is just how in control Mary is\, but he’s bound to find out soon. \nSkerryvore is a Philadelphia Fringe Festival performance taking place in the Hill-Physick House and produced by Melody Marshall. Performances are: \nSeptember 20 2:00PM | September 20 7:30PM | September 21 7:30

SUMMARY:The Appropriations Bill with PA IPL & JEA - September 20\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Making climate-friendly appropriations a priority in the Federal budget\n\n\nJoin Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light and the Jewish Earth Alliance on September 20 at 7:00pm for an informational session on the Appropriations Bill. We will discuss making climate-friendly appropriations a priority in the Federal budget by understanding the budgeting process and what we need to tell our officials about our care and concern for the climate. \nSpeaker: Madison Mayhew\, National IPL Federal Policy Manager \nSeptember 30th is the deadline for Congress to pass a budget\, so Congress will be focused on appropriations throughout the month. The appropriations/budget process is complex and a huge team of well paid lobbyists are trying to persuade Congress to consider their industry’s interests. However\, when citizens raise their collective voices\, we can also have a say how funds get appropriated. We need to tell our Senators and Representatives that climate solutions are important to us.
