SUMMARY:Walk Around Philadelphia : 2023 Exhibit @ Cherry St Pier
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features images from the city’s edge created by artists who’ve set out to explore the city’s border on foot. \nSince 2016\, Walk Around Philadelphia has evolved into a citywide public program that has facilitated the exploration of the city’s furthest (and wildest) margins for hundreds of Philadelphians. \nWalk Around Philadelphia creates cultural events that bring people together in shared experiences that connect them to their own bodies\, their neighbors\, and the landscape of Philadelphia. \nThrough facilitated walks\, exhibitions and narrative storytelling\, the project uses the structure of exploring the city’s perimeter to engage with themes of borders and boundaries\, privilege and access\, social and environmental justice\, infrastructure and ecosystems\, commerce and incarceration\, indigenous history and colonization and more. \nThe walk currently happens twice a year in February and September\, along with offering retreat opportunities and other programming. The next walk will take place over four weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun) from Aug 25th – Sept 17th. \nFind out more & sign up for updates & invites at:\nwww.WalkAroundPhiladelphia.com \nGallery Hours:\nMon. – Thurs.:\n12 pm – 9 pm \nFriday\n12 pm – 11 pm \nSaturday\n11 am – 11 pm \nSunday\n11 am – 9 pm \nSpecial Events\nHappy Hour Gallery Hours with JJ @ Cherry St Pier\nThursdays August 24th & Aug 31st\, September 7th\, 14th & 21st \nFriday September 1st – Post Walk drinks & snacks + First Friday @ Cherry St Pier\nSaturday September 2nd – Pre Walk Send Off @ Cherry St Pier\nSaturday Sept 23 – Pre Walk Send Off @ Cherry St Pier\nSaturday Sept 23 – Exhibit Closing @ Cherry St Pier

SUMMARY:First Friday\, June 7th @ Arch Enemy Arts
DESCRIPTION:Arch Enemy Arts gallery and boutique welcomes you to our First Friday event on July 7\, 2023 from 5PM – 9PM at 109 Arch Street in Old City! Free and open to the public\, come celebrate the dramatic and varied new collections we have on display\, including three solo features by artists kEda Gomes\, Michael Reedy\, and S.V. Williams\, as well as a new group exhibition titled “NO PLACE LIKE…” Plus\, you still have a chance to check out our gorgeous exhibition of GRAPHITE\, which includes over forty works from our eleven-year archives dedicated to pencil and works on paper. \nkEda Gomes is a South African artist living and working in Portugal. Her illustrative work\, expressed through a range of media\, explores themes of identity\, exclusion\, childhood\, and politics through recurring adolescent characters. Gomes studied at KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa which has influenced her work greatly. Her work has been featured in numerous publications\, and she creates one-of-a-kind toys for galleries like Clutter Gallery in NYC. \nMichael Reedy is an internationally renowned artist whose striking\, signature style explores shifting themes related to life\, death\, and the human condition\, and his work pulls from a range of historical artistic traditions–from figurative realism\, anatomical illustration\, and hyperrealism to op-art and geometric abstraction. Reedy attended undergraduate school at North Central College and obtained his MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University in 2000. He currently teaches 2D Media at Eastern Michigan University. \nS.V. Williams is known for his unique hybrid creature artworks\, mixing organic and mechanical forms in ways that are inventive and fantastical. Williams’ deftly detailed hand allows viewers to explore the depths of a psychedelic\, subterranean world where surreal yet tightly rendered forms undulate and emerge from chiaroscuro darkness. A self-taught artist based in Sacramento\, Williams is inspired by sci-fi\, horror films\, comics\, and magazines as well as the street art/graffiti scenes of the West Coast where he has painted a number of prominent murals. \nNo Place Like… is a group exhibition exploring the vast and vacillating concept of home in all of its forms. From international artists and expats to local well-knowns and home-growns\, we asked artists from all over the world: What moors them? What memories and mythologies tie them to–or free them from–that sense of belonging for which we all strive? Alternatively\, what windows can we peer into? What doors can we enter? What times\, spaces\, and places do others call home?

SUMMARY:What’s Beyond the Fence Walk
DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES \nAre you new to Tyler or a visitor who has never explored the trails outside the deer fence?  Join Tyler docent Dave Charlton for a monthly series of leisurely walks on the Tyler Trails.  We will spend one to one and a half hours learning to find our way in the natural areas while discovering seasonal changes in the landscape and the flora and fauna that inhabit it.  We’ll keep to easy walking trails where you can feel free to bring the family. In summer\, the forest is full of life. Shaded paths provide relief from the heat of the day. Summer-blooming flowers appear\, and woodland creatures dart about enjoying the season’s bounty of food. \nCheck-in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide.  As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. In addition\, participants should bring water and perhaps a walking stick.  PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails.  We recommend a carrier if you bring an infant or young child.  \nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist.  He is a founding member of our docent program and has recently completed training in the PA Master Naturalist program. \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nMembers: $5 per adult\, $3 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under (sign in for your Member discount!).  An adult must accompany all children. \nNon-Members: $21 per adult\, $13 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under.  The fee includes admission\, so feel free to spend the day at Tyler!  An adult must accompany all children. \nGuest Pass Registrants: $5 per non-member.  Guest passes are for non-members only.  Please give your guest pass to the Visitor Center associate at check-in. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Plants in Our Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the plants that make our watershed healthy with science educators from the Academy of Natural Sciences-and make a tree rubbing!\n\n\nPlants and trees are not just beautiful to look at; they play an important role in keeping our creeks and streams healthy. For this workshop\, we will learn about the riparian buffer\, or the vegetated area next to a body of water that helps shade\, protect\, and clean the water. We’ll learn about particular plants and their role in watershed ecology\, as well as the importance of trees. We’ll then have the opportunity to make rubbings of tree bark found in the buffer. \nThis workshop is part of the Mapping Our Watershed project. Please join us for a follow up workshop on Wednesday\, July 12th from 6-8:30pm at Cheltenham Center for the Arts\, where we will make prints with watershed plants!

SUMMARY:Mushroom and Fungi Walk
DESCRIPTION:Explore the grounds of Glen Foerd while learning about different kinds of mushrooms and fungi.\n\n\nJoin Luke Smithson for a stroll around the Glen Foerds grounds as we look for mushrooms and other fungi. Fungi are a vital part of every land ecosystem\, even in large urban areas like Philadelphia. The walk will be leisurely\, appropriate for all ages\, and held rain or shine (although heavy/severe rain will cancel the event). Luke is a lifelong mushroom enthusiast and is active with the Philadelphia Mycology Club and the North American Mycological Association as well as several other mushroom organizations.

SUMMARY:Tussie-Mussie Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What in the world are Tussie-Mussies? Explore the history of these bouquets of herbs and flowers and leave with a unique tussie-mussie!\n\n\nThe gathering of handfuls of herbs into tight little handheld bouquets is probably as old as human history. In the Middle Ages the bouquets were called tussie-mussies and were carried to fend off disease. They were not very effective in preventing disease\, but they did smell better than the Middle Ages did.\n \n \nLater on the Victorians called them posies and used them to send messages. They devised a complicated language for flowers and herbs in which each had a meaning which would be understood by the person who received the posy.\n \n \nMembers of The Herb Society of America – Philadelphia Unit – would like to share the enjoyment of making these little bundles of fragrant herbs and the challenge of creating a message to go with them \nThis workshop will take place at Wyck (6026 Germantown Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19144). We will gather in the education building next to the Walnut Lane entrance.

First we remove invasive plants then plant native trees and shrubs that can handle both drought and wet conditions. The funding came initially from a riparian buffer grant to help divert storm water in a priority flood zone. This will provide natural habitat for wildlife and migrating birds while native flowering shrubs feed pollinators and flowering native trees help feed other insects. \nNote as of 12-16-2021: As a Keystone 10 Million Trees Partner\, Excel Events can now help facilitate the planting of free trees in Bucks County and Philadelphia. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. \nFrom Lincoln drive\, you must carefully make your way to Wissahickon Ave. \nHeading North on Lincoln Drive from Route 1: \n\nTurn right onto Rittenhouse St\nTurn left at the Sunco at the next light\nGo thought the light on Lincoln Dirve slowly \nTurn left into the woody path\, Rittenhousetoen Lane \nYour destination is the first big white house on the right with the big porch.\n\nHeading South on Lincoln Drive from Mt Airy: \n\nTurn right on W Cliveden St\nTurn left on Wissahickon Ave\nTurn right onto the woody driveway\, Rittenhousetown Lane\nYour destination is the first big white house on the right with the big porch.\n\nLimited parking available next to Black Lotus. SUMMARY:Labyrinth Making Workshop at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about healing power of labyrinths!\n\n\nJoin us to learn all about the healing power of labyrinths! Led by Athena Dugan\, the Philadelphia representative of the international Labyrinth Society\, this unique workshop will teach you the history and techniques of labyrinth making. Attendees will work together to make and walk an actual labyrinth on the lawn across from the boathouse! \nDating over 5000 years old\, the earliest representations of labyrinths have been discovered in pottery shards and carvings in stone. Unlike a maze with many passages and dead ends designed to confuse you\, the labyrinth is a unicursal path\, a circuitous design that is walked and leads into the center and back out again to the entrance. \nWe’ll create a temporary labyrinth in the park in honor of the earth and then walk the completed labyrinth\, a transformational experience that can bring stress relief\, support your emotional health and healing\, and both literally and figuratively ground you to the earth. \nLabyrinths allow us to live in the moment by putting one foot in front of the other. Take your first step on this path by signing up for this special workshop! \nAfter the program has concluded\, celebrate the accomplishment of creating a one of a kind labyrinth with new friends by enjoying drinks and food and the nearby Parks on Tap. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nTools and equipment will be provided on site\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nBring water and a snack.\nBring bug spray and sunscreen.\nThere are nearby bathrooms (port-a-potties).\nAppropriate for adults & mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\n\nPARKING: There is plenty of free parking in the lot between the boathouse and the Swedish Museum. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car!
