Then join longtime Wissahickon steward David Bower and his dedicated team of Crew Leaders and Trail Ambassadors for a variety of stewardship tasks!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools for scraping\, digging\, tamping\, and cutting; moving heavy objects\n• Planting site maintenance: using long handled tools for cutting\, scraping\, and digging\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools for cutting vines\n• Litter clean-up\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. On Sunday\, August 2\, we are gathering at the historic gravesite of John Dunlap\, the official printer to the Continental Congress\, for a special typographic celebration. \nIn honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of Dunlap’s monumental “broadside” printing\, the Common Press will be onsite with two portable printing presses. \nWhether you’re a history buff\, a design enthusiast\, or just curious about the craft\, this is your chance to step back in time\, see demonstrations up close\, and honor a Philadelphia patriot at his final resting place. \nHow to Attend & Ticket Option:\n\nBurial Ground Admission & Printing Experience ($15): Includes general admission the burial ground\, PLUS a guaranteed hands-on spot at a portable press during your selected 15-minute window. You will work with a printer from the Common Press to operate the press and print your own custom typographic souvenir to take home.\nStrictly Limited: To ensure a high-quality\, unhurried experience\, only 24 printing spots are available (2 spots per 15-minute window). By 1900 the Ward was home to approximately 30% of Black Philadelphians. Boasting the largest Black population in the city\, the Seventh Ward was the epicenter of Black culture and home to many past and present African-American schools\, churches and institutions as well as abolitionists\, educators\, athletes and political and women’s civil rights activists. \nThe Seventh Ward was so fascinating that W.E.B Du Bois traveled to Philadelphia to conduct his study of Philadelphia’s Black population residing in the ward. Staying in the Seventh Ward\, Dr. Du Bois conducted door-to-door in-depth interviews with Black Philadelphians from all walks of life. He witnessed economic\, educational\, and political discrimination. We will visit the site where W.E.B Du Bois penned his book\, The Philadelphia Negro published in 1899. \nThrough this tour\, you will visit many of these sites and experience first-hand the remnants of this section of the city. Although this neighborhood went through massive transitions\, losing most of its Black residents\, in the 1960s due to urban renewal and gentrification\, many of the institutions\, building\, and homes of prominent residents that would have been familiar to Dr. DuBois or visited by him\, still remain today. This is your opportunity to join us as we explore this still fascinating community that played a significant role in Black Philadelphia history. \nPlease wear comfortable sturdy shoes\, we will be walking on uneven surfaces. Masks are required. Please be aware that you need to be reasonably fit for the walk\, and are responsible for your own safety. Taking part in the tour means you are participating at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 24\, 4 – 6:30 PM \nThis exhibit brings together the work of artists Jihan Thomas\, Efi Green\, and Linda Fernandez in an exhibition exploring healing\, identity\, and self-possession through deeply personal visual language. Across painting\, mixed media\, abstraction\, and symbolism\, the artists transform experiences of grief\, motherhood\, migration\, mental health\, and cultural memory into spaces of reflection and resilience. Rooted in vivid color\, expressive gesture\, and layered storytelling\, Possession considers home not only as a physical place\, but as something carried within the body\, memory\, and spirit. Together\, these works affirm art’s power to hold vulnerability\, transformation\, and collective care in times of uncertainty. \nFREE \nThe exhibition will be on view at Scribe Video Center Monday through Friday\, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM\, from July 24 to September 12. \nThe Gary Smalls Gallery Project at Scribe is curated by Tamara Mason.

From camouflage and lightning-fast reflexes to sharp senses and powerful defenses\, explore the amazing “superpowers” animals use to find food\, stay safe\, and navigate their environments.\nMeet live animal ambassadors and get an up-close look at the adaptations that make wildlife so fascinating.\n_____\nAbout the presenter: Dawn White has worked as a naturalist and Environmental Educator for 30 years. She graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park Management\, with a concentration in Environmental Interpretation.\nDawn started her career at the former Great Valley Nature Center in Devault\, PA\, where her fondness for birds of prey and teaching with wildlife developed. She has designed and implemented various environmental education programs for children and adults alike during her work at the Nature Center\, Elmwood Park Zoo\, and Green Valleys Watershed Association.\nIn 2015\, Dawn formed Indian Run Environmental Education Center\, LLC\, located at her home in Glenmoore\, PA\, and is licensed to house non-releasable birds of prey. She also has snakes\, turtles\, and a tarantula. SUMMARY:Black Dance Legacy Mural Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a jubilant celebration of Black dance and public art in Grays Ferry.\n\n\nThe Black Dance Legacy Mural celebrates the history of Black dancers in Philadelphia\, who broke barriers and cultivated a lineage of excellence that continues to influence the dance world today. Featuring live dance performances\, music\, and refreshments\, the dedication will also be a chance to hear from living legends Philadanco Founder Joan Myers Brown and Karen Warrington\, a former ballerina and dance historian who helped steward the mural project. \nPhiladelphia Black Dance Mural Project by artist Bernard Collins Jr. highlights three generations of Black dancers\, beginning with Essie Marie Dorsey\, who overcame centuries of racial discrimination to teach Black ballerinas from her home studio beginning in 1926. Also honored are three of Dorsey’s students\, Joan Myers Brown\, Sydney King\, and Marian Cuyjet\, who went on to become trailblazing instructors in their own right\, combining Caribbean dance with classical techniques; Alvin Ailey’s Judith Jamison; and Philadelphia-trained ballet star Michaela DePrince. \n \nNote: Parking near the mural is limited. Plan ahead and consider parking at Impark (521 South 20th Street) or South Street Parking Garage (1740 South Street).

DESCRIPTION:Students will create one of a kind ceramic sculptures that can be functional or decorative.\nIn this sculptural hand building class\, we will harness the power of our imaginations. Students will learn foundational handbuilding skills\, sculptural techniques\, and a variety of surface treatments & decorations. Students will create one of a kind ceramic sculptures that can be functional or decorative. Projects may include sculptural vessels\, animal sculpture and figure sculpture. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own project ideas to class. This class is appropriate for a range of skill levels\, from beginner to advanced. Whether you are looking to establish fundamental techniques or explore the bounds of your creativity and imagination\, this class is for you! \nClass will run Tuesday nights January 20th – February 24th 6pm – 9pm \n—— \nPlease note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement\, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for at least three hours and use their hands for two hours. You must be able to lift 25lbs. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms available for students\, including one that is ADA accessible. If you have specific accessibility needs or questions\, please contact us in advance so we can discuss potential accommodations.
