DESCRIPTION:Create a hand stitched picture collage using fabric scraps and hand stitching found objects.\n\n\nFound objects such as beads\, single earrings\, pins\, broken jewelry and more. This sustainable art practice is about being mindful in our creativity through locally sourced and upcycled materials.  \nBasic embroidery or hand stitching experience is encouraged but not required. Comfortable using fabric scissors. \nThis is a 2 part class. By registering you are comitting to attending all sessions. \nJune 9th and 16th from 6:00pm-8:00pm \nTacony LAB Class Enrollment and Attendance Policy \nAttendance Policy: We understand that traffic and other delays happen\, however we request you to be on time to our events. We have a 15 minute grace period. If we are not notified and you are more than 15 minutes late\, you may not be permitted to join the class. Our classes are only 2 hours long and it is difficult to catch up students when they are late. \nThe Tacony LAB’s classes are unique in Philadelphia: we do not charge tuition or any sort of fees for any of our classes. \nOur classes are popular and often have wait-lists. This work will also involve a two-year mentoring project with local young women to encourage them to become GrandWomen in their communities as well. Pleasant Place Trailhead (7100 N Mt Pleasant Place)\nDistance: 3.5-4 miles\nDifficulty Level: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 12+\nParking: There is street parking along N Mt Pleasant Place and a stop for Bus 53 on Sedgwick Street & Wayne Ave. See map for details.\nRestrooms: None\nJoin Debbie Hoellein\, Jim McClory\, Brenda Rich\, and Paul Neumann as we hike the Wissahickon during the last days of spring. We’ll be visiting the Frog Pond again. In April we only saw a couple of frogs\, but we’ll see what they’re doing and saying in the middle of June. Glen Fern\, Fingerspan Bridge\, and Monastery Stables are also on our route. And\, of course\, we’ll appreciate many plants.\nThe second half of this 3.5-4 mile hike is more difficult than our usual hikes. We will be climbing some steep steps (without a railing) to get up to Fingerspan\, and scrambling over some rocks on either side of the bridge\, and later on. The Orange trail is rocky and wet in areas south of Fingerspan. So be prepared! Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but\, please\, no dogs except for service animals.\nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. Unless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. DESCRIPTION:“My concern is with humanity. I want to confront the viewer with life and with what we are doing to each other. I hope to awaken in the viewer a sense of compassion . . . without compassion there is nothing.”\n—Luis Cruz Azaceta \nBodies and Souls examines the liberatory power of figurative art. Though often treated as conservative in the second half of the 20th century\, artists used representational and realist methods to assert presence for those omitted from dominant narratives or harmfully depicted by those outside their communities. Realism and representation remain powerful means to show embodied human experience\, encompassing gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home. \nThese methods can help us imagine the world we want to live in. Representational art has been critical for artists who want to make themselves and their communities visible on their own terms. It provides the agency to see and be seen\, to show relationships\, pleasure\, and autonomy. Representing ourselves is a powerful means of celebrating our full humanity. \nThis is the throughline of an eclectic collection formed by Philadelphians Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Bodies and Souls celebrates their devotion to artists and immense generosity towards PAFA. Featuring over 120 works given and promised to the museum\, the exhibition will examine prominent themes in the collection\, integrating artists who are often seen independently or as part of regional communities. \nBodies and Souls is presented concurrently with an exhibition of the same title featuring the Kohlers’ personal collection at Woodmere\, Charles Knox Smith Hall\, 9201 Germantown Ave. Bodies & Souls – Woodmere. \nFeatured Artwork: Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) El Bolero\, 1983–84. RSVPs are highly recommended. \nA quarter of a million black people were still enslaved in the state of Texas after “the peculiar institution” was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. We invite you to discover why Texas wassuch a hotbed of slavery after its legal end\, dive into the importance of General Orders\, No. 3\, and delve into the real cultural significance of an African American tradition that spans generations. \nBlack Magic Woman Productions grew out of a need to create opportunities for theatre artists of color. Since 2006\, BMW Productions has promoted an appreciation for the African-American theatre canon. This work will also involve a two-year mentoring project with local young women to encourage them to become GrandWomen in their communities as well. See map for details.\nBathrooms: There will be bathroom access at the Valley Green Inn before we walk over to Devil’s Pool.\nWould you like to be part of keeping the Wissahickon Valley watershed healthy and litter-free? Then join us on Tuesday mornings this summer for a Devil’s Pool Clean-up!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own project ideas to class. This class is appropriate for a range of skill levels\, from beginner to advanced. Whether you are looking to establish fundamental techniques or explore the bounds of your creativity and imagination\, this class is for you! \nClass will run Tuesday nights January 20th – February 24th 6pm – 9pm \n—— \nPlease note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement\, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for at least three hours and use their hands for two hours. You must be able to lift 25lbs. SUMMARY:Community Resilience Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Community Resilience Group focuses on learning about resilience issues in food systems\, water systems\, energy systems and more. We are reviewing ways in which we could survey our community and create a resilience baseline to gain some indication of where we can improve. \nOur group initially focused our meetings on discussing the book The Community Resilience Reader (available for free at: resilience.org). We will be shifting to exploring The Community Resilience Toolkit in order to do a community resilience assessment of the Greater Media area. You can learn more about that here. \nWe’re also learning about the long term impact of climate change on different regions of the country. Using the American Resiliency channel on Youtube which gives forecasts and projected outlooks for every state in our country\, we compared the PA and NJ assessments. The projections for NJ are much grimmer than for PA. Something our group recognized is that the videos focus narrowly on Climate\, We’re committed to exploring what Community Resilience requires within the broader polycrisis and ecological predicament we face. \nIn the future\, the Community Resilience group will also be organizing community documentary film nights around Greater Media – coming soon! \nOur regular meeting date is the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm. We meet at a group member’s house and you can email Will Powers for the address if you’d like to attend.

DESCRIPTION:I am excited to let you know about an upcoming Philadelphia multimedia production of Theater of Witness- GrandWomen June 11-13 at the Suzanne Roberts Theater. \nIt is produced locally and highlights 6 of our own GrandWomen– seniors telling their personal stories and inspiring messages of resilience\, motivation and courage for our local community of all ages. This work will also involve a two-year mentoring project with local young women to encourage them to become GrandWomen in their communities as well. The group of performers is as diverse as our city– each with their own message of bearing witness\, understanding\, healing and inspiration. \nPlease see more background information on the production and the performers here: TheaterofWitness.org/GrandWomen.\nWe are excited and proud of this locally-developed project focused on wisdom from elder women\, and hope you will be as well and can help us spread the word!

DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location TBD\nParking: TBD\nBathrooms: TBD\nWould you like to be part of keeping Wissahickon Valley Park beautiful and sustainable? Then join Friends of the Wissahickon staff\, Crew Leaders\, and Trail Ambassadors in a variety of stewardship tasks!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools for digging\, raking\, and scraping; moving heavy objects\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over; using long handled tools for cutting\n• Litter clean-up\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email one business day before the event. If you are hoping to bring a group of 5 or more people\, please reach out to us first.\nRegistration is required for all volunteer service days so that participants can be informed of emergency cancellations.
