SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Each February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days people spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them using eBird. These observations help scientists better understand and protect global bird populations. \nJoin Wissahickon Trails for a family friendly\, kid-focused event to learn about\, count and celebrate birds. We’ll spend some time learning about bird identification\, how to use binoculars\, and take a walk around the Four Mills Preserve to count all the birds we can find. \nDress for the weather as we will be spending some time outside. The trails may be wet or muddy\, so be prepared. | Bring binoculars if you have them or borrow ours if you don’t. \nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada. \nAccessibility Notes \nThe walk will be approximately 0.5 miles over fairly flat natural trails (roots and stones common) at a slow walking pace\, with multiple stops for standing and listening. Access to trails requires crossing two bridges with multiple steps\, additionally there is a short stepping stone crossing on the route. Restrooms are available.

SUMMARY:Winter Gulls at Glen Foerd
DESCRIPTION:Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter. \nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.\nPlease dress according to the expected weather. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away. \nNo binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra\, Cobbs Creek\, Cecil B. Morre\, Chestnut Hill\, Eastwick\, Falls of Schuylkill\, Fishtown\, Fox Chase\, Greater Olney\, Independence Library\, Logan\, Lovett Memorial\, Northeast Regional\, Oak Lane\, Parkway Central\, Richmond\, South Philly\, Torresdale\, West Philadelphia Regional\, and Widener. \nFor questions\, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.

An invitation to show up however you are and be welcomed in the warmth and care of co\n\n\nTypically\, when we think of Valentine’s Day\, we think of love and romance. For those who’ve experienced or are going through a divorce or breakup\, for those who are grieving the death of their person and for those longing for partnership\, this commercialized holiday can be especially hard on the heart…even if you try to ignore it. It can also be challenging for anyone grieving the loss of connection\, as despite what the media wants us to believe\, this is also a holiday to appreciate all of the love in our lives\, including family and friends. \n \nJoin blew kind of d’griot and grief coach Naila Francis of This Hallowed Wilderness for an afternoon to be with whoever and whatever is on your heart. “Making Space: a time to learn about and honor our grief together” is an invitation to show up however you are and be welcomed in the warmth and care of community. In a culture that celebrates strength and resilience in overcoming grief\, turning toward our sorrows with vulnerability and compassion is a radical act. Come be affirmed and witnessed in a community of grievers as we share our stories and truths. \nSee a video of our last gathering in 2024. \nThis special offering will be held from 2 to 4 pm\, Saturday\, Feb. 16\, at d’griot\, 51 Maplewood Mall.
