We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! SUMMARY:Fossil Fuels and Autocrats\, in Russia and Beyond (Climate & Democracy)
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion with MAX BERGMANN (Center for Strategic and International Studies)\, moderated by MITCHELL ORENSTEIN (Penn).\n\n\nHybrid Event: In-person and online. Zoom link sent to registered attendees. \nTHE PRODUCTION OF FOSSIL FUELS is deeply intertwined not only with the economic interests of large global corporations\, but also with the political regimes of powerful autocrats. In this conversation\, security expert MAX BERGMANN (Center for Strategic and International Studies) focuses on the case of Vladimir Putin and his attempts to wield fossil fuels as a strategic weapon to undermine opposition to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. As Europe actively seeks to transition to renewable energy\, but at the same time remains economically dependent on fossil fuels\, has Putin’s strategy succeeded or backfired? More generally\, do threats to global energy and food security provide leverage for autocrats\, or do they instead energize transformative policies in the world’s democracies? Moderated by MITCHELL ORENSTEIN (Penn Russian and East European Studies). \nMAX BERGMANN is the director of the Europe\, Russia\, and Eurasia Program and the Stuart Center in Euro-Atlantic and Northern European Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Prior to joining CSIS he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where he focused on Europe\, Russia\, and U.S. security cooperation. From 2011 to 2017\, he served in the U.S. Department of State in a number of different positions\, including as a member of the secretary of state’s policy planning staff\, where he focused on political-military affairs and nonproliferation; special assistant to the undersecretary for arms control and international security; speechwriter to then secretary of state John Kerry; and senior adviser to the assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs. \nClimate and Democracy is hosted by the Andrea Mitchell Center and Penn Program in Environmental Humanities and sponsored by the Environmental Innovations Initiative.

SUMMARY:Adventures in Food and Design
DESCRIPTION:The ecological implications of placemaking\, food systems & localism\n\n\nOriginally from Gettysburg PA\, architect and chef\, Ben Walmer\, comes from a family of five generations of fruit growers. It is from this agrarian background that he traces his connections to food and design and the motivation to launch Highlands Dinner Club (HDC) in New York City in 2009. Ben currently lives in central New Jersey and is founding architect and creative director of the NJ/NYC-based interdisciplinary design practice\, Broadloom\, whose diverse capabilities include design strategy\, hospitality design\, regenerative food systems design and agricultural master planning. HDC is a mobile social and culinary laboratory produced by Broadloom and collaboratively executed by a rotating cast of chefs\, farmers\, designers\, and artists. Wielding spontaneous spirit and exceptional local ingredients\, HDC has created farm-to-table experiences across three continents and seen time and again the connections and joy that come when people gather at the table to share a meal. \nFOOD MAKES FRIENDS \n\n\n\nPenn State Great Valley encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the access provided\, please consult Becky Stanko at rus1078@psu.edu in advance of your participation or visit.

SUMMARY:Story and Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Events Director (and kid at heart) Martha Moore will present age-appropriate and seasonally inspired stories and strolls to encourage a love of books and nature in young children.  \nThis month’s book is In November by Cynthia Rylant. \nFamilies with young children (ages 18 months to 5 years) are invited to attend these nature discovery events designed to inspire a sense of wonder about the natural world. After all\, today’s children are tomorrow’s conservationists.  \nThrough the sharing of stories\, each playful exploration engages both adults and children as we make new discoveries about the plants and animals in the forest. Families are welcome to stay after the event to enjoy a picnic from home.  \nThis event is made possible with generous support from  \nThe Kulicke Fund. \nMore ‘Story and Stroll’ dates in this series: \n\nFriday\, September 22\, 2023 – Goodbye Summer\, Hello Fall by Kenard Pak\nFriday\, October 13\, 2023 – The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming

SUMMARY:Lincoln Drive Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Historic Rittenhouse Town \nWe will be meeting near the kiosk on Rittenhouse Lane at Historic Rittenhouse Town. See this map for the specific meeting location and parking options. Please note that the road closure on Lincoln Drive (between Wissahickon Avenue and Ridge Avenue) will go into effect at 8:00am\, so plan your travel accordingly. If you are driving\, you will need to park on neighborhood streets and walk to the meeting location. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get to the meet-up location. \nLincoln Drive is the only main road that runs right next to the creek within Wissahickon Valley Park\, and one that few have had the opportunity to walk on.  This Saturday\, we’re partnering with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation to close Lincoln Drive from Wissahickon Avenue to Ridge Avenue for a large-scale clean-up along this heavily traveled (and often heavily littered) road. Come help us keep this section of the creek clean and beautiful! \nNo experience is needed. We provide gloves\, tools and instruction – you just need to show up! Volunteer service Days are excellent\, easy ways to help us take care of Wissahickon Valley Park. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and bring a water bottle with you. Detailed information and the specific meeting location will be sent by email the day before the event. For more information contact Amelia Marren at marren@fow.org
