DESCRIPTION:aPA presents Vessels in Clay Community Workshop created in partnership with the Clay Studio\n\n\nJoin us outdoors at the Ellen Phillips Samuel Memorial for a hands-on clay workshop created in collaboration with the Clay Studio. In this workshop you will create your own vessel inspired by Maren Hassinger’s new public art exhibition at the site\, Steel Bodies. This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn from experienced ceramic artists and become familiar with both hand building and decorative techniques. \nEach vessel will be glazed\, fired\, and ready for pick up in 2-4 weeks. All skill levels are welcome and materials will be provided. \n\n\n\nGETTING TO THE ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL \nThe Ellen Phillips Samuel Memorial is a series of three terraces located along Kelly Drive between Boathouse Row and the Girard Street Bridge. \nPedestrians & Cyclists \nThe site is easily accessible to pedestrians and cyclists via the Schuylkill River Trail\, which runs along the eastern bank of the river right past the terraces of the Memorial alongside Kelly Drive. \nTaxi & Ride-Share \nThere is a small parking lot immediately south of the Girard Street Bridge that can be used for drop offs. This parking lot is near the northernmost of the three terraces. \nDriving & Parking \nIf you are driving and need to park\, the nearest parking lot is the Oval Parking Lot between the Art Museum and Lloyd Hall\, near the Azalea Garden. It is a 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot to the Memorial\, and there will be directional sidewalk stickers leading to the site starting at the end of Boathouse Row. \nTransportation options via SEPTA: \n\n32 bus (direction Ridge-Lyceum): Poplar St. & 30th St stop\, and about a 15-20 minute walk from there (approximately 1 mile)\n48 bus (direction 27th-Allegheny): 27th St. & Brown St. stop\, and about a 15-20 minute walk from there (approximately 1 mile)\n49 bus (direction 33rd-Dauphin): Pennsylvania Avenue & 29th St stop\, and about a 15-20 minute walk from there (approximately 1 mile)\n7 bus (direction 33rd-Dauphin): 27th St. & Brown St. stop\, and about a 15-20 minute walk from there (approximately 1 mile)

SUMMARY:Plants in Our Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the plants that make our watershed healthy with science educators from the Academy of Natural Sciences-and make a tree rubbing!\n\n\nPlants and trees are not just beautiful to look at; they play an important role in keeping our creeks and streams healthy. For this workshop\, we will learn about the riparian buffer\, or the vegetated area next to a body of water that helps shade\, protect\, and clean the water. We’ll learn about particular plants and their role in watershed ecology\, as well as the importance of trees. We’ll then have the opportunity to make rubbings of tree bark found in the buffer. \nThis workshop is part of the Mapping Our Watershed project. Please join us for a follow up workshop on Wednesday\, July 12th from 6-8:30pm at Cheltenham Center for the Arts\, where we will make prints with watershed plants!

SUMMARY:Mushroom and Fungi Walk
DESCRIPTION:Explore the grounds of Glen Foerd while learning about different kinds of mushrooms and fungi.\n\n\nJoin Luke Smithson for a stroll around the Glen Foerds grounds as we look for mushrooms and other fungi. Fungi are a vital part of every land ecosystem\, even in large urban areas like Philadelphia. They are often overlooked because of their hidden nature\, but we will seek them out and discuss the various roles they are serving as well as their relationships to plants and animals (including us)! The walk will be leisurely\, appropriate for all ages\, and held rain or shine (although heavy/severe rain will cancel the event). Luke is a lifelong mushroom enthusiast and is active with the Philadelphia Mycology Club and the North American Mycological Association as well as several other mushroom organizations.

SUMMARY:Tussie-Mussie Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What in the world are Tussie-Mussies? Explore the history of these bouquets of herbs and flowers and leave with a unique tussie-mussie!\n\n\nThe gathering of handfuls of herbs into tight little handheld bouquets is probably as old as human history. In the Middle Ages the bouquets were called tussie-mussies and were carried to fend off disease. They were not very effective in preventing disease\, but they did smell better than the Middle Ages did.\n \n \nLater on the Victorians called them posies and used them to send messages. They devised a complicated language for flowers and herbs in which each had a meaning which would be understood by the person who received the posy.\n \n \nMembers of The Herb Society of America – Philadelphia Unit – would like to share the enjoyment of making these little bundles of fragrant herbs and the challenge of creating a message to go with them \nThis workshop will take place at Wyck (6026 Germantown Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19144). We will gather in the education building next to the Walnut Lane entrance.

First we remove invasive plants then plant native trees and shrubs that can handle both drought and wet conditions. The funding came initially from a riparian buffer grant to help divert storm water in a priority flood zone. This will provide natural habitat for wildlife and migrating birds while native flowering shrubs feed pollinators and flowering native trees help feed other insects. \nNote as of 12-16-2021: As a Keystone 10 Million Trees Partner\, Excel Events can now help facilitate the planting of free trees in Bucks County and Philadelphia. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. \nFrom Lincoln drive\, you must carefully make your way to Wissahickon Ave. \nHeading North on Lincoln Drive from Route 1: \n\nTurn right onto Rittenhouse St\nTurn left at the Sunco at the next light\nGo thought the light on Lincoln Dirve slowly \nTurn left into the woody path\, Rittenhousetoen Lane \nYour destination is the first big white house on the right with the big porch.\n\nHeading South on Lincoln Drive from Mt Airy: \n\nTurn right on W Cliveden St\nTurn left on Wissahickon Ave\nTurn right onto the woody driveway\, Rittenhousetown Lane\nYour destination is the first big white house on the right with the big porch.\n\nLimited parking available next to Black Lotus. SUMMARY:Labyrinth Making Workshop at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about healing power of labyrinths!\n\n\nJoin us to learn all about the healing power of labyrinths! Led by Athena Dugan\, the Philadelphia representative of the international Labyrinth Society\, this unique workshop will teach you the history and techniques of labyrinth making. Attendees will work together to make and walk an actual labyrinth on the lawn across from the boathouse! \nDating over 5000 years old\, the earliest representations of labyrinths have been discovered in pottery shards and carvings in stone. Unlike a maze with many passages and dead ends designed to confuse you\, the labyrinth is a unicursal path\, a circuitous design that is walked and leads into the center and back out again to the entrance. \nWe’ll create a temporary labyrinth in the park in honor of the earth and then walk the completed labyrinth\, a transformational experience that can bring stress relief\, support your emotional health and healing\, and both literally and figuratively ground you to the earth. \nLabyrinths allow us to live in the moment by putting one foot in front of the other. Take your first step on this path by signing up for this special workshop! \nAfter the program has concluded\, celebrate the accomplishment of creating a one of a kind labyrinth with new friends by enjoying drinks and food and the nearby Parks on Tap. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nTools and equipment will be provided on site\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nBring water and a snack.\nBring bug spray and sunscreen.\nThere are nearby bathrooms (port-a-potties).\nAppropriate for adults & mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\n\nPARKING: There is plenty of free parking in the lot between the boathouse and the Swedish Museum. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car!

SUMMARY:Wineberry Hike
DESCRIPTION:Wineberry Hike in South Mountain Reservation with Kirk Barrett\n\n\nHike 3.5 miles (or 2.5 with early exit) at a modest pace over rocky trails with a long climb from the Rahway River back to the summit.  Includes a discussion of how the Rahway River contributes to drinking water supply to the towns of Orange and Rahway.  As for the wineberry\, it is a non-native\, invasive plant that is very common in local natural areas\, including the South Mountain Reservation. On the plus side\, it produces a tasty berry that looks and tastes like a raspberry  and typically ripens early to mid July. We will stop along the way to sample the berries. \nHiking poles recommended as are long pants to deter ticks.. Bring plenty of water. \nLeader: Dr. Kirk Barrett\, PE\, President of the Rahway River Watershed Association and expert on local watershed issues. \nMeet at: The gazebo by th edog park along Crest Drive in Maplewood.

SUMMARY:Sunday Slow Ride (PBA Event)
DESCRIPTION:Philly Bike Action! will be meeting at the Schuylkill River Park at 10am on July 9th for our first Sunday Slow Ride. This ride is to bring awareness to the City  permitted bike lane parking afforded to the houses of worship on the Spruce/Pine corridor. We would like to to see an end to this practice. Our mission is to build support among the community for safer bike lanes and communicate that bike lane parking is dangerous for both cyclists and motorists.  Please read the following guidelines and essential information before choosing to participate: \n\nWe will be following a 1 mile circuit where the bike lane parking is most utilized. We also considered the hazard of crossing Broad Street on bicycle. The ride will progress along Pine Street\, left on 16th street\, left on Spruce Street\, left on 21st street\, left on Pine street\, and repeat.\n\n \n\nThe ride will go for 1 and 1/2 hours until 11:30am. Feel free to arrive late or leave early. Bring your friends! We will be meeting for coffee\, smoothies\, and snacks afterwards at Cadence Cycling. The address is 201 South 25th street\, Philadelphia\, PA.\nWe will be riding SLOWLY. This means about 4 or 5 mph\, the speed of a brisk walk.\nWe will be obeying all traffic laws. Specifically\, this means obeying all traffic signals. This is a slow ride so there is no need to rush through a light. The only exception is to keep the group together.\nThis is a RAIN or SHINE event. The exception is hazardous weather or an AQI exceeding 125. Please consider your health before riding and consider wearing a mask. N95s work the best. This will likely be a recurring ride so do not worry if you need to sit one out. This advice is given with understanding that there is a need to balance the air quality risks to the community with the ongoing risk of worsening air quality due to inaction.\nIf there are over 40 people in attendance\, we will be splitting into two groups in increase our visibility. The first group will roll out at 10:10 am. The second group will roll out at 10:15am.\nHigh visibility vests are encouraged\, especially if you are at the front or back of the group.\nGoPros or other mobile cameras are encouraged. This is great for sharing our advocacy efforts with the public as well as encouraging civility.\nDO NOT respond to frustrated drivers or bystanders. This is especially important for those riding in the back. While we are doing everything we can to encourage civility\, the likelihood of encountering a frustrated driver is always present as many of us know too well. If you are harassed or threatened\, take a deep breath and do not retaliate. Escalation can only make these situations more dangerous and we will better our cause by addressing the systemic issues that lead to an unsafe cycling environment. Keep calm and pedal on.\nSAFETY IS OUR #1 PRIORITY. It is well known that riding a bicycle carries significant risk in Philadelphia. This ride is no exception. At Philly Bike Action! we minimize risk by following all traffic laws\, communicating well with all street users\, wearing high-visibility vests\, keeping calm in confrontation\, and documenting our rides through video.\nStay engaged following the ride! This means reaching out to your district councilperson and registered community organization (RCO) following the ride. It also means reaching out to the houses of worship involved and letting them know we want to partner with them to find transportation alternatives that work for the whole community. This means decreased reliance on street parking and more utilization of micromobility\, public transportation\, walking\, rideshare\, and parking garages. Strong Towns is a great resource that highlights how advocacy for decreased urban motorization is a great tool for building faith and community:\nStrong Towns + Faith Communities: Announcing a New Series\n\n\nHere is a list of the houses of worship that currently utilize bike lane parking permits and with whom we should focus on partnering with: \n \nThis information is available publicly at: https://stsweb.phila.gov/permitphl/ \n\nFinally\, we are here to change our city for the better. Let’s have fun doing it! This means making signs\, making friends\, wearing colorful clothing\, playing music and any other form of creative expression.  To help in this endeavor\, a sign making guide is in the link below.\n\nPhilly Bike Action! DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create beautiful\, one-of-a-kind plant prints and patterns on textiles using natural dyes.\n\n\n\nLearn how to create beautiful\, one-of-a-kind plant prints and patterns on textiles using natural dyes. \nThis workshop will lead participants through two unique natural dye processes for creating patterns on fabric: bundle dyeing using a variety of kitchen scraps\, food waste dyes\, and spices; and eco-printing using locally grown dye flowers. By focusing on both kitchen dyes and flower dyes\, participants will be introduced to a broad array of natural dye sources. Bundle dyeing and eco-printing are two of the most water-wise natural dye techniques\, making these methods particularly eco-friendly. You will leave this workshop having created two naturally dyed fabric samples\, one for each process\, and handouts that will allow you to continue investigating these practices on your own. Get inspired by the magic of coaxing color from cheerful flowers and humble kitchen waste to create works of art on fabric. When registering\, if it’s within your means\, please consider a donation when registering through Eventbrite to help us cover the expenses of this workshop. The cost to run this workshop works out to be $25 per person. \nThis workshop will have enough materials available for 16 people to create dyed samples. If you register to attend\, please be mindful we are purchasing supplies for you. If you can no longer come\, even if it’s the day of\, please let us know so we can open your seat for someone else to be able to use the purchased materials. We always encourage “audits” if the class gets booked up and you are still interested in learning about the process. Please feel free to come\, learn from Laura\, and see what everyone creates! \nDVAA runs 50+ free workshops\, exhibitions\, and other events every year around Philadelphia. Please consider donating when registering for your ticket so we can continue running our programming in the future and supporting our intergenerational audience! \n\n\n\nShirt Eco-Printed by Laura Hricko \n\n\n\nBundle dye and Itajime folded vat dye samples dyed by Laura Hricko

You will have the opportunity to design and explore in Thomas Jefferson University’s 14\,000-square-foot Fashion and Textile Futures Center\, as well as Fashion Merchandising & Management’s brand-new studio space. Learn about one of the largest and most exciting industries in the world from current faculty and industry professionals. \nThis workshop invites you to engage with the many different facets of fashion\, and introduces you to the collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach throughout fashion and textile industries. Members of the Thomas Jefferson University faculty will guide students through an immersive\, career-focused curriculum that prepares students to contribute to aspects of the fashion value chain. Ranked among the top fashion schools by Business of Fashion and Fashionista\, the program emphasizes active and hands on learning applications. \nOur goal is to inspire high school students to pursue creative careers at Thomas Jefferson University. \nSummer 2023 Fashion & Textile Workshop: Designing for the intersection of Fashion\, Textiles\, and Sustainability \nWithin this workshop\, students explore fashion through the lens of inclusivity\, environment\, and ethics. With a focus on sustainable design practices\, students will tap into currently underdeveloped areas of the fashion ecosystem to develop new and exciting opportunities. \nStudents will learn to research their inspirations and create engaging and aspirational mood boards based on their inspirations. Through textile design\, students will synthesize their inspiration into print designs\, jacquards\, knits\, and other unique fabrications. Inspired by these textiles\, students will then explore fashion design with a focus on sustainability. Through an upcycling project\, students will develop new and exciting silhouette ideas\, and will sketch a capsule collection incorporating the textiles they developed. After these collections have been designed\, participants will weave into Fashion Merchandising and Management. Students will assess the importance of developing brands and customer profiles to market products in a global world driven by technology. At the end of the week\, students will present their projects to faculty and peers in a professional-style critique to gather feedback. \nThe Kanbar College Fashion Design\, Textile Design\, and Fashion Merchandising & Management Summer Academy is an in-person experience and will be held daily for five (5) days\, 9:00AM to 5:00PM Eastern Standard Time.
