DESCRIPTION:Explore how the Distributed Capacity Procurement model empowers utilities to scale distributed energy resources (DERs) for a resilient grid.\n\n\nPier LaFarge\, Sparkfund’s CEO\, and Paul Bonney\, Kleinman Center Board Member\, will discuss the Distributed Capacity Procurement (DCP) model\, which empowers utilities as leaders of the energy transition to meet the unprecedented demand for electric power driven by a return of US manufacturing\, data center growth and electric transportation. With their deep understanding of the grid\, utilities are uniquely positioned to lead the charge on planning\, siting\, deploying\, and dispatching distributed capacity resources (DERs) to create a more resilient\, sustainable\, and cost-effective grid. The DCP model is a new tool utilities can pick up that allows them to deploy DERs at the scale and pace necessary to support economic growth and transform the built environment for the benefit of our society. Following the discussion\, a brief Q/A session will be held. \n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\nPier LaFarge is the co-founder and CEO of Sparkfund\, an energy transition partner providing program management\, project implementation\, and financing services for utilities and building owners. He serves as a Trustee at The Nature Conservancy’s Maryland and DC chapter\, and as a Next Gen Strategy Committee member supporting the board of Fidelity Charitable. Previously\, while at ICF International\, he co-founded a service offering focused on energy efficiency finance strategy. In 2010\, he founded Race to Replace\, a statewide clean energy-focused voter registration campaign in Vermont in partnership with League of Conservation Voters. \n\n\nModerator\n\n\nPaul Bonney served as a senior vice president of Exelon and a number of its subsidiaries: Bonney was senior vice president\, legal and regulatory strategy for Pepco Holdings from 2016 to 2018\, senior vice president and general counsel of Constellation Energy from 2012 to 2016\, and vice president of regulatory affairs and general counsel at PECO from 2007 to 2011. Bonney was vice president and deputy general counsel-regulatory of Exelon from 2001 to 2006. Prior to joining PECO in 1990\, Bonney was an associate at Morgan\, Lewis & Bockius and a law clerk to the Honorable Edward N. Cahn\, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Bonney also worked for National Economic Research Associates\, an economic consulting firm in Washington\, D.C.\, and at the Chicago Board of Trade. Bonney currently is a lecturer at Clemson University\, teaching courses in Energy and Sustainability\, Business Strategy and Business Law. SUMMARY:Nature Monoprints at Wissahickon Trails
DESCRIPTION:Join printmaker Rhonda Babb at Wissahickon Trails for a fun\, 2-hour workshop where you’ll use found and foraged natural objects to create monoprints. \nThis art-making process invites you to slow down\, observe\, and appreciate the delicate balance of local ecosystems\, like the Wissahickon watershed\, which provides clean water and habitat for plants and animals. Finished nature prints can be displayed in frames or used in collage and scrapbooking projects. No prior printmaking experience is required. All materials\, including paper\, inks\, and natural objects\, will be provided. We’ll be using water-soluble inks\, but some pigments may stain\, so we recommend bringing an apron or wearing old clothes. \nFee: $25 per person \nRhonda Babb is a screen printer\, graphic artist\, and photographer. As a graphic designer\, she focuses on brand identity and marketing communications for small businesses and non-profits. \nBorn and raised in Philadelphia\, Rhonda received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia\, PA\, where she majored in Fashion and Advertising Illustration. She returned to Moore for a Certification in Interior Decoration. Concern for the environment led Rhonda to earn a master’s degree in Sustainable Design from Philadelphia University\, now known as Thomas Jefferson University. She studied screen printing under Lisa Marie Hamilton and Tony Rosati at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in their Continuing Education Program. She is a member of a cooperative printmaking studio and artist collective\, BYO Print\, artist group\, InLiquid\, and is a board member of the American Color Print Society (ACPS).

DESCRIPTION:There are many ecological benefits to integrating vegetables into your native landscape. Whether you are new to vegetable growing or looking for ways to add edible plants to your ornamental landscape\, this workshop will explain the essentials for success: site selection and preparation\, planting\, maintenance\, and harvesting. Instructor Rob Medicus will also identify several great vegetables to incorporate into flower beds and borders for both an edible and ornamental reward.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Thursday\, February 13\, 2025.\nAbout the Instructor:\nRob Medicus has served as a Delaware Master Gardener since 1994. He loves creating and delivering horticultural workshops. Venues have ranged from UD Cooperative Extension to Osher Academy\, Friends of White Clay Creek\, lots of gardening clubs and more. He has held several leadership roles in the technology industry\, including chief scientist at Nano-Terra\, cofounder at Arsenal Medical\, founding CTO at MC10\, and CEO of 10EQS. \nMimi Joy CooperRecycling Coordinator\, Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority \nMimi Cooper is the recycling coordinator for the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority\, where she oversees collections and operations of a source-separated recycling processing facility in central Pennsylvania. A graduate of Penn State University\, Mimi is a Senior Certified Recycling Professional through the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP). She has partnered with local schools to achieve Green Ribbon School recognition from the U.S. Department of Education\, as well as the Presidential Youth Environmental Awards. Mimi regularly teaches classes on backyard composting and vermicomposting for all ages\, and she also leads professional development courses for PROP members. \nHendrik DullingerVice President\, Business Development\, EFS-plastics Inc. \nHendrik Dullinger holds a master’s degree in international management and has 10 years of industry experience. He launched plastics recycling projects in Europe\, Asia\, and North America. His journey began in retail recycling where he designed and executed zero waste programs for a large global grocery chain. As vice president of business development at EFS-plastics\, Hendrik is responsible for corporate growth and EFS’s go-to-market strategy including supplier partnerships and converter relations. \nKaitlyn ZajkowskiStudent\, Penn State UniversityIntern\, Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority \nKaitlyn Zajkowski is a student at Penn State studying materials science and engineering with a focus in sustainable plastics and circularity of materials. In the fall of 2014\, E&EI rebranded to become republicEn.org. \nFor his work on climate change\, Inglis was given the 2015 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. They live on a small farm in northern Greenville County\, South Carolina. \n\n\nDr. Michael Mann is Presidential Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. His research focuses on climate science and climate change. He was selected by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002\, was awarded the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geophysical Union in 2012. He received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement 2019 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2020. He is a Fellow of the AGU\, AMS\, GSA\, AAAS and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He is co-founder of RealClimate.org\, author of more than 200 peer-reviewed and edited publications\, numerous op-eds and commentaries\, and six books including Dire Predictions\, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars\, The Madhouse Effect\, The Tantrum that Saved the World\, The New Climate War and Our Fragile Moment. \n\n\nDr. Sanya Carley is the Mark Alan Hughes Faculty Director of the Kleinman Center and Presidential Distinguished Professor of Energy Policy and City Planning at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. She holds secondary appointments at the Wharton School and the School of Social Policy and Practice. She also co-directs the Energy Justice Lab and is a Resources for the Future (RFF) university fellow. \nCarley’s research focuses on energy justice and just transitions\, energy insecurity\, electricity and transportation markets\, and public perceptions of energy infrastructure and technologies. With the Energy Justice Lab team\, she built and maintains the Utility Disconnection Dashboard. Carley is an author of the Fifth National Climate Assessment report and a member of the Innovation Policy Forum and the Roundtable on Macroeconomics and Climate-related Risks and Opportunities\, respectively\, for the National Academies. \nPrior to her appointment at Penn\, Carley was a Paul H. O’Neill Professor at Indiana University\, and held administrative positions there as a Chair\, Program Director of the top-ranked Master of Public Affairs program\, and as Associate Vice Provost of Faculty & Academic Affairs. Before academia\, she worked at the World Bank Group as a consultant. \nCarley received her Ph.D. in public policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, her M.S. in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, and bachelor’s degrees in economics and sustainable development from Swarthmore College. \n\n\nPlease note this is an in-person event. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the natural beauty of Mt. Cuba’s forests and meadows this fall and winter as you experience the change of seasons – from autumn’s foliage to winter’s serenity. Become familiar with our native flora as you improve your health and explore the extensive walking trails in our natural lands.\nEach walk will be different and will cover approximately 2.5 to 3 miles. Dress for the weather\, bring a water bottle\, and be prepared for hilly (sometimes steep) and uneven terrain.\nThis program takes place in person in Mt. Cuba Center natural lands on Three Thursdays: 2/13\, 2/20\, & 2/27 (Rain Date: Thursday\, March 6).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEileen Hazard\, community outreach coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center\, enjoys connecting people to nature through gardening and science. She earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College and an MS in Water Resources from the University of Vermont. She has supplemented her degrees with plant-focused biology classes at West Chester University\, a PA Master Naturalist certification\, and an Ecological Gardening Certificate. Prior to joining Mt. DESCRIPTION:A textile reuse\, mending\, and upcycling gathering. Drop-in every other week!\n\n\nBYO mending projects. I’ll be on hand to help\, whether it’s darning\, patching\, or something else. Some basic supplies (needles\, embroidery thread\, pins\, scissors\, sewing machine\, iron\, interfacing\, basic thread) will be provided. \nFeel free to BYO handcraft\, specific color thread\, etc. \nThis gathering is about repairing our clothes and extending the life of our textile belongings\, together. Come fix that hole in your sock\, sew on that button\, hem that pair of pants. \nShow up\, hang out\, and fix your things. \nWhile this isn’t a formal workshop or class\, support is available for problem solving and technique. We can look at things and figure them out together. Some sewing experience is helpful\, but not required. Demos are available for new techniques and tricks. \nEvery other Wednesday evening\, 6:30-8:30pm\, at Starr Garden Community Center. Suggested donation is $10 for supplies\, but everyone is welcome regardless. Pay what you can\, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. \n \nAbout your Host: Hi I’m Tess and I’ll be there\, fixing my socks and sweaters\, my homie’s pant button\, etc. Usually darning by hand. I’m an artist and apprenticing tailor. I love sewing\, weaving\, and creative problem solving – big and small. Led by John Hatfield\, this series will provide hands-on\, practical guidance for building sustainable fundraising models\, securing corporate and in-kind contributions\, and executing effective giving campaigns. Participants will leave each session with actionable plans tailored to their unique goals\, and prepare them for the year ahead.  \n \n\n\n\nAbout John Hatfield: \nJohn Hatfield is a Professor of Practice teaching a graduate Arts Management program at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. New to teaching\, he has worked as an arts professional in multiple capacities for over 35 years including 10 years as Executive Director of Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens\, NY\, 17 years as Deputy Director of the New Museum\, NY\, and working as Asst. V.P.  for the L.M.D.C. the NYC State Government agency rebuilding lower Manhattan after 9/11.  As a Executive Director\, increased the annual operating budget from $850K to $1.8M\, raising money from individuals\, foundations\, businesses and government sources. During this 10 year tenure\, completed a $7.4M capital campaign for an adaptable reuse shipping container building as the first permanent home of the organization.  At the New Museum\, he oversaw all annually earned revenue sources of income. \nHe’s managed to make a living in the arts his entire professional career and helps others do the same.
