A testament to survival and second chances\, this cookbook offers recipes for the tender\, crispy-edged\, square-cut\, sauce-on-top pies that are Down North’s signature dish; a whole chapter is devoted to vegetarian and vegan pizzas like No Better Love made with four cheeses and the arrabbiata-inspired Norf Sauce\, while the meat and seafood pizza chapter features their most popular Roc the Mic pepperoni pie as well as the smoky berbere-brisket Tales of a Hustler and Say Yes\, topped with jerk turkey sausage\, roasted butternut squash\, kale\, ricotta\, and lemon-honey drizzle. \nThe 65 recipes for pizzas along with classic and creative wings\, fries\, lemonades\, and shakes are paired with cinematic photography of the pizzas in their natural setting and out in the wilds of Philadelphia\, with lots of journalistic-style photography of the Down North crew making dough and slinging pies. And with exclusive pizza recipes from renowned chef-supporters like Marc Vetri and Marcus Samuelsson\, We the Pizza celebrates ingeniously delicious pizza\, as well as the power people have to rise above their circumstances—if simply given the chance. \n \nAbout the author: \nMuhammad Abdul-Hadi is the founder and owner of Down North Pizza\, the mission-driven restaurant that exclusively hires formerly incarcerated individuals and serves up pies with a purpose in the Strawberry Mansion community in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. \nDown North Pizza is the culmination of Abdul-Hadi’s 13-year vision as a serial entrepreneur. It’s a concept that has long been ingrained in him; a place where he’s contributing to the economic improvement of underserved communities through excellent food and quality customer service. “What drives me is creating opportunities for the people around me and giving them the tools and resources to succeed. SUMMARY:One on One with Jessie Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on January 16th\, 2025 for a one-on-one discussion with Jessie Lawrence\, Philly’s new Director of Planning and Development.\n\n\nPlease join us on January 16th\, 2025 for a one-on-one discussion with Jessie D. Lawrence\, the new Director of Planning and Development for the City of Philadelphia. \nJessie D. Lawrence has nearly 20 years of experience in public and privately driven real estate development\, urban planning\, entitlements\, and land policies. He most recently worked in administration of Philadelphia’s 100th Mayor\, the honorable Cherelle L. Parker\, as Associate Deputy Mayor for Planning and Strategic Initiatives. His experience has primarily been with the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority\, the Philadelphia Land Bank\, and the Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation. In the latter of the three\, he served as the Director of Real Estate where he directed a multi-faceted land management team in securing interagency approvals\, from multiple boards of directors and City Council\, that have allowed for the sale and disposition of publicly owned land in Philadelphia. Much of this work has gone on to foster the recent affordable housing\, tax credit projects\, and social-impacting developments that exist throughout Philadelphia today. Most recently\, his team’s work at PHDC has directly supported the production of affordable homeownership opportunities marketed by the Turn The Key program under City Council’s Neighborhood Preservation Initiative. Consequently\, his combination of experiences has allowed him to effectively navigate public sector policies and operations through pushing project schedules\, troubleshooting anticipatory delays\, and interfacing with city and community leaders as well as private sector developers. \n \nThis event will be held at the Center for Design Philadelphia. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n \nFor more information\, click HERE!

SUMMARY:How Can Cities Advance Climate Action?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on how cities can fill a leadership vacuum on climate and spur global climate action.\n\n\nDuring Donald Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021\, cities played a critical role in advancing the climate change agenda\, often stepping in to fill the leadership vacuum left by national rollbacks on environmental policies. Urban centers like New York City and Bristol\, England\, as well as many others\, spearheaded ambitious initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, invest in renewable energy\, and promote climate resilience. Many cities reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement through coalitions like the We Are Still In campaign and the Climate Mayors network. Globally\, cities integrated climate action into urban planning\, demonstrating that local governance could drive meaningful progress on climate despite national inertia or global gridlock. \nFast forward to 2025\, and Trump holds the US presidency once again. He has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement and promises to increase domestic fossil fuel production and reverse many renewable energy provisions and related tax incentives. How will cities respond this time around? Can they fill a leadership vacuum on climate and spur global action? What might help or hinder them? Join us at Perry World House for this expert discussion. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n \nLolita K. SUMMARY:Forests to Farmlands: Navigating Tradeoffs in Land Use for Renewable Energy
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore solutions for balancing renewable growth & land use.\n\n\nAs the U.S. accelerates its clean energy transition\, land use conflicts between renewable energy infrastructure and agricultural or forested landscapes have become increasingly important. States are grappling with this challenge in various ways. In Massachusetts the installation of ground-mount solar systems has led to notable losses in forest carbon\, biodiversity\, and agricultural land productivity since 2010. This discussion will examine the tradeoffs involved in siting renewable energy projects in the Northeast and beyond. Join us to explore strategies for scaling solar energy responsibly\, ensuring that we preserve the environmental and cultural values of natural and working lands. \n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\nJonathan Thompson is a forest landscape ecologist whose research focuses on long-term and broad-scale changes in forest ecosystems\, with an emphasis on quantifying how land use – including harvest\, conversion\, and land protection – affects forest ecosystem processes and services. He is the Principal Investigator for the Harvard Forest Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program\, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and involving more than 100 scientists and students investigating the dynamics of the New England landscape. He also leads the New England Landscape Futures project\, which collaborates with diverse stakeholders from throughout the region to build and evaluate scenarios that show how land-use choices and climate change could shape the landscape over the next 50 years. Thompson holds a PhD in Forest Ecology (2008) and a MS in Forest Policy (2004) from Oregon State University. \nGrace Wu is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at UC Santa Barbara. Before joining UCSB\, Grace was a Smith Conservation Fellow at The Nature Conservancy and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. She was also a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the John Muir Institute of the Environment at UC Davis. She was trained in systems thinking and interdisciplinary approaches in the Energy and Resources Group at UC Berkeley. \n\n\nModerator\n\n\nThabo Lenneiye is the inaugural managing director of the Carl H. Goldsmith Sustainable Agriculture Fund at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy\, where she leads research at the intersection of sustainable agriculture\, climate\, and energy policy. Her work focuses on building a comprehensive research agenda that explores how agriculture can address the challenges posed by climate change and the global energy transition. Lenneiye is also a senior fellow with the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the Wharton School. \nHer experience reflects a deep commitment to societal impact. Before joining the Kleinman Center\, she served as managing director of Penn Praxis\, where she oversaw strategic planning\, business development\, and operations for the applied research center focused on social impact at the University of Pennsylvania. At Gensler\, a global design firm\, she not only worked as an architect and project manager but also collaborated with the executive team to drive initiatives related to justice\, inclusion\, and social impact. Notably\, she led the establishment of Gensler’s Africa practice and supported CEO Diane Hoskins in her role on the Obama Administration’s Presidential Advisory Council for Doing Business in Africa (PACDBIA). Additionally\, she served as the inaugural secretary of the Board for the African Union Pan-African Diaspora Women’s Association from 2017 to 2018. \n\n\n\nThis event is a part of Energy Week at Penn\, a week of energy-focused events across Penn’s campus. SUMMARY:Play Reading - Ushers in the House

He’s also worked as a farm laborer\, spent four decades as a postal worker. In the sunset of his life he’s begun to contemplate his legacy and the possessions he wants to leave his family. Oscar’s perceptions of the the world are now viewed through lenses where things like humility\, courage\, and familial loyalty are becoming as obsolete as a rotary phone. \nNote: A brief Talk-back with the actors and the playwright will follow this premiere reading!

SUMMARY:Self Care Sundays

Join us on Sundays at 11:00 AM for some time dedicated to self-care and relaxation. This event will take place at Black Lotus HHC at 206 Rittenhousetown Lane\, where you can unwind and focus on yourself. \nTake part in yoga sessions\, meditation exercises\, and mindfulness activities to rejuvenate your mind and body. Treat yourself to healthy snacks and refreshments while connecting with like-minded individuals. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to prioritize your well-being and practice self-love. See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane.
