SUMMARY:DAN WEISS TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents the adventurous drummer Dan Weiss and his long-running trio with Jacob Sacks and Thomas Morgan at Solar Myth on September 18\, 2023. \nDrummer\, composer and tabla player Dan Weiss has long been acclaimed as a startlingly original voice in modern jazz\, stretching the music’s boundaries into the realms of contemporary classical\, extreme metal\, Indian music and progressive rock. But Weiss himself has never failed to acknowledge his wide-ranging influences and the jazz tradition in which his music remains rooted. With his latest album\, Dedication\, Weiss pays explicit homage to nine of his most vital inspirations\, from musical and cinematic masters to loved ones and close collaborators\, including Elvin Jones\, Burt Bacharach\, Conlon Nancarrow\, and Andrei Tarkovsky. The album returns the drummer to his trio with pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Thomas Morgan\, who have worked together for over two decades.

SUMMARY:Pique Boricua Workshop with the Norris Square Neighborhood Project at Manayunk
DESCRIPTION:In Puerto Rico\, you will find a traditional hot sauce\, called pique\, used on rice\, beans\, and meat dishes. While most Puerto Ricans use their own recipes for making pique\, creating a variation of taste\, it is typically made with vinegar\, a variety of chili peppers\, garlic\, and spices\, followed by a fermentation period to allow for a more complex flavor to develop. \nThe Norris Square Neighborhood Project follows a recipe gifted to them by a community elder and land steward\, Don Angel. Don Angel’s recipe calls for ají dulces (or any hot pepper)\, garlic\, cilantro\, bay leaves\, salt\, pepper\, oil\, and vinegar\, providing just the right amount of spice that keeps you going back for more. This workshop will be led by youth from the Norris Square Neighborhood\, who will show you how to craft and ferment the ingredients to create a perfectly delicious pique to use on your future dishes. \n\nDATE\nSeptember 18\, 2023 \n\n\nTIME\n6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\n\n\nCOST\n\n$25 \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY\n\nClick here for more information about accessibility at the PHS Pop Up Garden at Manayunk.

SUMMARY:dragonchild x Sunken Cages
DESCRIPTION:Conceived by Ethio-American saxophonist D.A. Mekonnen––cofounder/leader of the widely celebrated Debo Band—the solo project dragonchild is a culmination of decades of musical experimentation\, embodied spiritual practice\, and critical thinking. Growing up in Texas as a first generation Ethiopian-American\, Mekonnen often heard traditional Ethiopian instruments and vocals\, later seeking out master Ethiopian musicians to learn to play the traditional instruments of his heritage. The groundbreaking Debo Band combined those influences with American jazz\, soul\, and funk through the instrumentation of Eastern European brass bands. dragonchild represents the next phase of Mekonnen’s musical journey. \nSunken Cages is the moniker of Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin\, originally an acoustic drummer/percussionist who has worked with a wide array of musicians\, from pop-star Shakira to legendary jazz musician Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre\, to to leading his own innovative global groups Tarana and Turning Jewels Into Water on international stages for the past 15 years. \nTogether\, dragonchild x Sunken Cages create an exciting new global music that draws from their respective cultural backgrounds as well as contemporary electronic music. Sunken Cages plays electronic and acoustic drums\, triggers textures and generates loops in real-time\, while dragonchild shifts between saxophones and electronics.

SUMMARY:Permaculture Farm Tour at Hundred Fruit Farm
DESCRIPTION:Our annual free open gate tour of our farm. We’ll walk through the farm and talk about how our farm is designed with permaculture principles\n\n\nEvent Details\n \n \n \nCome join us for our annual ‘Open Gate’ Farm Tour! This is a free farm tour open to the public; it’s the perfect chance to come see what we are doing at Hundred Fruit Farm\, ask lots of questions\, taste some pawpaw fruit\, and learn a lot about permaculture design and no-spray organic farming in the process. After the tour\, stick around to buy some plants for our edible landscaping nursery or some produce from the farm!\n \n \n \nEvent Format\n \n \n \nThe tour will start at 2:00 pm and run until approximately 4:30 pm. We will do a walk and talk across the entire farm. We will go through how we created and designed our farm; what permaculture is and how we use permaculture design principles; what it means to be organic and no-spray and how we manage all our systems that way; and an overview of the following areas/systems on the farm:\n \n \n \n– berry grove\n \n– fruit orchard\n \n \n– large nut tree orchard\n \n \n– hazelnut orchard\n \n \n– rotational sheep grazing\n \n \n– pastured hens and eggs\n \n \n– solar PV system\n \n \n– no-till gardens\n \n \n– compost systems\n \n \n– nursery and propagation area\n \n \n– high tunnel\n \n \n– edible landscaping areas \n– and more!\n \n \n \nDuring the tour\, we will also have a pawpaw tasting\, so if you’ve never had the opportunity to taste a pawpaw (a delicious native fruit that we grow on the farm)\, this will be the perfect chance to do so!\n \n \n \nOther Important Details\n \n \n \nAttendees are of course very welcome to bring their children and families. All children must be supervised at all times – farms can be dangerous places with various hazards like uneven ground\, ponds\, poison ivy\, electric fences\, etc. Although we are dog and cat owners ourseleves\, we have a strict no dogs for visitors to our farm – so please leave your dogs (and any other pets) at home.\n \n \n \nWe have a porta-john on site for anyone who needs to use a bathroom during the tour. We also have hydrants around the farm with potable water that people can drink from and use to refill water bottles.\n \n \n \nWe suggest people wear a hat\, long pants\, and sunscreen. Although you can wear sandals if you like\, be aware that some areas of the farm do have poison ivy on them\, so if you are very sensitive to poison ivy\, wearing closed-toe shoes would be a good idea\, too.\n \n \n \nEvent Cost / Registration\n \n \n \nAlthough this event is completely free to attend\, we do require that attendees register beforehand right here at our Eventbrite page.\n \n \n \nAfter the Tour\n \n \n \nFeel free to stick around after the tour if you’d like to purchase some berries\, fruit trees\, or other edible plants from our edible landscape nursery. We will also have produce for sale\, including fresh pawpaws and frozen aronia berries. We can also answer any additional questions you have that you didn’t get a chance to ask during the tour.

SUMMARY:The Art of Soil Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join InLiquid’s 40th Parallel North Preservation Brigade and artist Rebecca Schultz to make soil pigments!\n\n\nPlease RSVP to join InLiquid and artist Rebecca Schultz on September 16th for a soil pigment and painting workshop at Penn Treaty Park! There will be two sessions of this workshop; please only choose one that works best for your schedule. \nPrehistoric humans made their paint from rocks and soil – and we can still make art with these rich colors today! The soil used in this workshop will be collected from Penn Treaty Park\, situated in Fishtown along the Delaware River\, as well as other neighborhoods within the Philadelphia region. \nThe pigments produced during the event will be used by artist Rebecca Schultz in her newest work\, which will be showcased in Material Time\, an exhibition at Park Towne Place in October 2023. By attending this workshop\, not only will you learn a fascinating historical technique\, but you will also have the chance to contribute to this collaborative artwork. \n \nThis event is held outdoors. Please keep the weather in mind when dressing and make sure to bring adequate hydration. There is no running water or bathrooms on site. Rain date September 17th.
