SUMMARY:Kati Gegenheimer: We've Only Just Begun
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. \nTo reinaugurate the newly renovated Morris Gallery\, PAFA presents Kati Gegenheimer: We’ve Only Just Begun\, an immersive monographic exhibition exploring love–familial\, romantic\, or brotherly–at this moment of profound social division. Anchored by a symbol-laden painted musical score of the titular line from the Carpenters’ 1970 song\, the exhibition presents works surveying how love is a necessary choice to be cultivated\, measured\, sustained\, or dismissed\, over time. \nRooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. Gegenheimer’s markmaking\, symbolism\, and vibrant use of color reclaim emblems of care and tenderness (hearts\, love notes\, hinges\, calendars\, keyholes\, to-do lists)\, and ponder how love is practiced over time rather than experienced in a singular instance. In an era driven by speed\, extraction\, and instant gratification\, the exhibition insists on return and continuity. \nGegenheimer’s paintings are devoted expressions of love\, luck\, and time\, drawing inspiration from art history\, architecture\, popular culture\, and craft. Her works embrace the decorative and diaristic\, each an altar to a fleeting moment. Reliant on color\, tempo\, and composition\, each of her paintings is a sign\, symbol\, and record all at once.

SUMMARY:Bodies and Souls
DESCRIPTION:“My concern is with humanity. I want to confront the viewer with life and with what we are doing to each other. I hope to awaken in the viewer a sense of compassion . . . without compassion there is nothing.”\n—Luis Cruz Azaceta \nBodies and Souls examines the liberatory power of figurative art. Though often treated as conservative in the second half of the 20th century\, artists used representational and realist methods to assert presence for those omitted from dominant narratives or harmfully depicted by those outside their communities. Realism and representation remain powerful means to show embodied human experience\, encompassing gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home. \nThese methods can help us imagine the world we want to live in. Representational art has been critical for artists who want to make themselves and their communities visible on their own terms. It provides the agency to see and be seen\, to show relationships\, pleasure\, and autonomy. Representing ourselves is a powerful means of celebrating our full humanity. \nThis is the throughline of an eclectic collection formed by Philadelphians Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Bodies and Souls celebrates their devotion to artists and immense generosity towards PAFA. Featuring over 120 works given and promised to the museum\, the exhibition will examine prominent themes in the collection\, integrating artists who are often seen independently or as part of regional communities. \nBodies and Souls is presented concurrently with an exhibition of the same title featuring the Kohlers’ personal collection at Woodmere\, Charles Knox Smith Hall\, 9201 Germantown Ave. Bodies & Souls – Woodmere. \nFeatured Artwork: Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) El Bolero\, 1983–84. Oil on canvas; 60 × 72 in. © Rafael Ferrer\, courtesy of the artist \nThe exhibition will include works by Robert Arneson\, Luis Cruz Azaceta\, Joan Brown\, Roy DeForest\, Rafael Ferrer\, Viola Frey\, Gregory Gillespie\, Juan Gonzalez\, Red Grooms\, Anne Minich\, Gladys Nilsson\, Ed Paschke\, Christina Ramberg\, Winfred Rembert\, Tabitha Vevers\, John Wilde\, Didier William\, Karl Wirsum\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Sunday Reset with Dope Botanicals
DESCRIPTION:Step into the exhibition and come play in the apothecary.\n\n\nPromise Work: A Shaker-Inspired Spring Reset\nInspired by the Shakers’ bottled remedies—and the bold promises printed on historic labels—this hands-on Sunday Reset is a workshop where you get to reset your nervous system and create your own herbal ritual. You will craft your very own herbal remedy for the support you need. \nYou’ll sip on spring-forward herbal tastes\, then jump into our Medicinal Herb Match Lab. You will choose the “promise” you want most right now\, learn the herbal actions behind it\, and build a custom tea blend that fits your body and the season. \nYou’ll leave with: a custom tea blend + a ritual card and a simple weekly routine. \n \nThis program is part of our monthly series\, Sunday Reset\, which features Philadelphia area practitioners working at the juncture of art and wellness. \n \nAbout the instructors\nSisters Nakia and Taahirah Stith have spent over 30 years using food as medicine\, guided by the principles they were raised with—respect for self\, community\, and the earth. Their shared vision for holistic wellness led them to co-create Dope Botanicals\, where they combine their expertise and passion. Every tincture\, tea\, and elixir they create is handmade in small batches\, using organic herbs sourced from trusted farms. At Dope Botanicals\, Nakia and Taahirah’s synergy is at the core of every product. Nakia’s deep knowledge of plant medicine blends seamlessly with Taahirah’s understanding of nutrition. Together\, they craft remedies that reflect their lifelong commitment to true\, intentional healing. In a fast-paced world where wellness is often commodified\, Nakia and Taahirah stand firm in their mission to offer authentic\, plant-powered solutions. \n \nAbout the exhibition\nA World in the Making: The Shakers explores the design legacy of the Shakers\, a religious group whose values of community\, labor\, and equality shaped their furniture\, architecture\, and everyday objects. Through works by contemporary artists influenced by the Shakers\, alongside original Shaker-made pieces\, the exhibition considers how their design principles remain relevant today. \nFounded in 18th-century England and later established in the U.S. across more than twenty distinct communities\, from Kentucky to Maine\, Shaker communities developed a distinctive visual language—marked by simplicity\, innovation\, and purpose. While often celebrated for their aesthetic\, Shaker designs were rooted in spiritual practice and collective life. \nBy pairing historical artifacts with newly commissioned works\, the exhibition invites reflection on how Shaker ideals continue to inform conversations around inclusion\, gender\, and intentional living in the 21st century. \nThis exhibition was organized by the Vitra Design Museum\, the Milwaukee Art Museum\, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia\, and the Wüstenrot Foundation in collaboration with Shaker Museum. \nAccessibility\nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact us at hello@ica.upenn.edu. \nSupport \nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong.
