DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Travel like an Anthropologist\,” an exploration of the cultural complexities of tourism and a guide to ensuring your visits to other places benefit all involved\, with Melissa A. Stevens\, principal at CultureSnap Consulting and adjunct professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Delaware. \nMark Twain once famously remarked that “travel is fatal to prejudice\, bigotry\, and narrow-mindedness.” Indeed\, it can open our minds to new ideas and possibilities\, positively contribute to local communities\, and help us establish lasting relationships with people across the world. \nAt the same time\, however\, our travels can be harmful to the people and places we visit and to our world as a whole. We can end up exploiting vulnerable populations\, worsening global and local inequalities\, accelerating climate change\, and forever altering the places and cultures that we visit. \nHow are responsible tourists supposed to navigate these contradictions without ruining their vacation? \nExplore the cultural complexities of what it means to travel\, and find ways to ensure your conscience rests easy after full travel days\, with the help of cultural anthropologist Melissa Stevens. \nShe’ll start by discussing how her own field has not always been a positive force in other parts of the world\, and historically has committed some of the same sins as the tourism marketing industry when it comes to shaping Western perceptions of Non-Western cultures. Popular anthropologists such as Margaret Mead and Napoleon Chagnon contributed to the “exotification” and exploitation of indigenous peoples and local communities in ways that cast a shadow on their work. \nIn confronting the ethical implications of its early history\, anthropology developed a perspective known as “cultural relativism\,” which called upon anthropologists to build awareness of their own cultural assumptions as a means to engage more ethically and responsibly with the people and places they visited. Anyone\, including tourists\, can learn to have a culturally relativist mindset in their travels. \nDr. Stevens will discuss how anthropologists use cultural relativism to gain a deeper understanding of people and places. She’ll also talk about how anthropologists look at tourism through a cultural lens\, diving into the politics of representation\, of performance\, and of authenticity\, and also examining gendered experiences of tourism. We’ll take a tour through the history of travel\, from early pilgrims to digital nomads\, and we’ll explore different types of tourism\, including cultural tourism\, ecotourism\, sex and romance tourism\, dark tourism\, backpacking\, and “voluntourism.” \nWe’ll consider the environmental and cultural impacts of tourism on tourist destinations. Drawing from her experiences conducting ethnographic research on cultural and sustainable tourism in Tanzania and Vietnam\, Dr. Stevens will share immersive stories about what she learned in researching how tourism was perceived and experienced by the people who live with it. \nWhat you learn at her talk will help ensure that you keep learning every time you pack your bags. DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. For February 7th\, we are joined by Fairmount Water Works and will take a look at our freshwater mussels that are nursing in the lake. We will learn how to measure them for data\, and conclude with sampling the water to view and identify our microscopic organisms. We’ll also have materials for optional watercolor painting with lake water. RSVP down below to secure your spot. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. This 10-mile paddle up the Delaware River will start at Pyne Poynt Park in Camden\, New Jersey\, and finish at Pleasant Hill Park in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. The event celebrates the region’s shared love of the river while promoting more recreational opportunities in urban natural areas. \nThe Big Paddle welcomes kayakers and canoers looking for both adventure and community connection. Rest stops and on-water support will be provided along the route\, and the day will conclude with a celebration at Pleasant Hill Park. Participants can bring their own kayak\, rent one\, or join a crew aboard 9-person voyager canoes for a unique group experience.

Ecological planting designer Michelle \nMichelle Detwiler\, founder of Wild About Native Plants\, will present her favorite native plants to feed all life stages\, including local milkweed species as well as essential nectar plants often overlooked in our gardens. Get tips on planting design for the most productive habitat for monarch caterpillars as well as guidance on incorporating a variety of habitat friendly species for wet-to-dry site conditions. SUMMARY:Spotlight Tour: Is There Still Water In That Well? The Restoration of the 18th & 19th Century Well and Wood Well Pump at the Cliveden Kitchen Dependency
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Transcending Thresholds initiative to study\, restore and interpret the service spaces at Cliveden\, this innovative project will conserve and restore the early well to function. Cliveden Preservation Director Libbie Hawes and architectural conservator Andy Palewski will discuss the construction and technology that provided necessary water for the kitchen and household in the 18th and 19th centuries. The project included removing three sections of wood well pump\, restoring the 40-foot-deep stone well shaft and removing the objects and mud at the bottom. The effort now focuses on restoring the pump sections and forged hardware\, including recreating the technology that brings groundwater to the surface for human use. This program will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen and well and a look at the pump parts being restored\, come prepared to walk around the site. \nGeneral admission is $20; $10 for 19119 and 19144 residents. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of at the Cliveden Barn. \nThe Well Restoration Project is supported by a Keystone Construction Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. Transcending Thresholds has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
