SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Freshwater Mussels!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. For February 7th\, we are joined by Fairmount Water Works and will take a look at our freshwater mussels that are nursing in the lake. We will learn how to measure them for data\, and conclude with sampling the water to view and identify our microscopic organisms. We’ll also have materials for optional watercolor painting with lake water. RSVP down below to secure your spot. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nClick this link to register your spot! https://tickets.audubon.org/events/37890d8b-579c-f7fa-6c53-f691f0bab1fa

SUMMARY:First Friday: Diving into Ocean Science
DESCRIPTION:This First Friday\, journey into the heart of our oceans as we explore the urgent challenges of water pollution\, microplastics\, and the incredible creatures that call the deep sea home. Plunge into the world of citizen science by testing out some of the instruments scientists use to monitor the health of our oceans\, and learn what we can all do to combat this global issue. \nHow well do you know the creatures of the deep? SUMMARY:Spotlight Tour: Is There Still Water In That Well? The Restoration of the 18th & 19th Century Well and Wood Well Pump at the Cliveden Kitchen Dependency
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Transcending Thresholds initiative to study\, restore and interpret the service spaces at Cliveden\, this innovative project will conserve and restore the early well to function. Cliveden Preservation Director Libbie Hawes and architectural conservator Andy Palewski will discuss the construction and technology that provided necessary water for the kitchen and household in the 18th and 19th centuries. The project included removing three sections of wood well pump\, restoring the 40-foot-deep stone well shaft and removing the objects and mud at the bottom. The effort now focuses on restoring the pump sections and forged hardware\, including recreating the technology that brings groundwater to the surface for human use. This program will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen and well and a look at the pump parts being restored\, come prepared to walk around the site. \nGeneral admission is $20; $10 for 19119 and 19144 residents. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of at the Cliveden Barn. \nThe Well Restoration Project is supported by a Keystone Construction Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. Transcending Thresholds has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

Full descriptions will be provided to registrants in advance of the event. \nAttendees will have three tracks with twelve sessions in total to choose from being led by content experts\, leaders in their fields\, and government officials about a range of topics from inter-municipal collaboration and stormwater utilities to innovative technologies and approaches to addressing water challenges to novel financing pathways and techniques. PDH credits will also be provided for attendees of sessions for Pennsylvania and New Jersey professionals\, provided by JMT. \nTickets are available now starting at $100 for non-profit & government employees\, $130 for SBN & GSI Partners members\, and $165 for General Admission. \n  \nSBN invites you to join us for our upcoming symposium being held on March 20\, 2024. The day-long conference\, titled “Achieving Climate Resilience Through Water\,” will convene business-owners\, professionals\, and other interested parties that work in the green stormwater infrastructure field and other issues relating to water management\, quality\, equity\, and climate resilience. Attendees will learn how to more effectively implement and manage stormwater management practices (SMPs)\, as well as identify new approaches to green stormwater infrastructure\, how water management impacts our waterways and drinking water\, gain a deeper knowledge of the regulatory frameworks that support nature-based solutions and the financing and funding mechanisms that exist to advance the industry forward. Our symposium will be held on March 20\, 2024 at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood. \nThe symposium will be opened by Pinar Balci\, Ph.D\, former Assistant Commissioner of the Environmental Planning and Analysis at the NYCDEP with an opening plenary titled: “Meeting Urban Stormwater Resiliency and Water Quality Challenges via Cross-Sectoral Collaborations\,” and will include 12 sessions across three tracks: Green Stormwater Management: New Approaches\, Operations & Maintenance; Stormwater & Climate Resilience Regulations & Policies; and Funding and Financing Opportunities for Water Infrastructure & Community Greening. In addition to these core tracks\, SBN and its Steering Committee has considered proposals that present cutting edge developments and innovations in water management technologies and practices\, as well as those that incorporate an integrated water systems approach to climate resilience. \nFind the session titles\, descriptions\, and speakers here: https://www.sbnphiladelphia.org/gsi/2024-achieving-climate-resilience-through-water-symposium-sessions-topics/.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Valley Talk: Climate Change in our Watersheds with Marc Peipoch
DESCRIPTION:In-person event hosted at the Valley Green Inn \nRiver watersheds\, like the Wissahickon\, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Join FOW and Marc Peipoch as he discusses the implications of climate change on our watershed and what we can do in the meantime. \nStreams and rivers drain the land we inhabit and collect everything that occurs on it\, including the developing impacts of climate change. Change is a natural feature of river ecosystems\, but global warming is accelerating these changes and aquatic communities may not be able to keep up with this new pace. \nWhat can we expect in the near future? What can we do to help river ecosystems adapt to these rapid changes? How can we adapt ourselves to it? These are some of the questions for which we will try to find some answers. \nMarc Peipoch\, PhD\, is a freshwater ecologist and a research scientist at the Stroud Water Research Center who investigates the effects of global change on streams and rivers. \nRegister here to attend in person at the Valley Green Inn!\nRegister here to attend virtually on Zoom!
