SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Freshwater Mussels!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. For February 7th\, we are joined by Fairmount Water Works and will take a look at our freshwater mussels that are nursing in the lake. We will learn how to measure them for data\, and conclude with sampling the water to view and identify our microscopic organisms. We’ll also have materials for optional watercolor painting with lake water. RSVP down below to secure your spot. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nClick this link to register your spot! https://tickets.audubon.org/events/37890d8b-579c-f7fa-6c53-f691f0bab1fa

SUMMARY:Toad Detour Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to protect our toads! Toad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in the early spring\, hundreds of them cross Port Royal\, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. Toad Detour season runs from March 1st to June 30th. On select nights\, when the conditions are just right\, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings\, saving hundreds of toads.\nSign Up\nThis family-friendly Toad Detour volunteer training session will be hosted at the Visitor Center on Saturday\, February 7th from 1-2pm. Sign up to let us know you are coming. Can’t make it on this date? Watch our online Toad Detour training video here. Questions? Contact volunteer@schuylkillcenter.org.\nWinterfest\nThis event is part of our Winterfest series\, which celebrates wildlife at the Schuylkill Center. We invite you to bring a donation of cotton balls\, kitchen trash bags (13 and 55 gal)\, free and clear laundry detergent\, or Dawn dish soap to this event to help us care for sick\, injured\, or abandoned wildlife at the Wildlife Clinic.

SUMMARY:Seed Cleaning Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for Seed Cleaning at Bartram’s Garden! \nHelp our gardeners prepare for next spring by cleaning last season’s seed harvest. You’ll learn traditional techniques like hand-threshing and winnowing to separate seeds from chaff\, making them ready for storage and sowing. Volunteers will also pack seeds into envelopes for sale in the Welcome Center. \nSeed cleaning is a relaxing\, family-friendly activity—usually done seated at a table\, chatting with neighbors. Registered volunteers will meet at the Coach House promptly at 9:30 AM. Come for the whole day or just an hour or two. Staff will provide instructions\, safety protocols\, tools and dust masks. Stop by and enjoy this contemplative\, hands-on way to support the garden! \nPLEASE NOTE: Capacity is limited to 15 participants\, so pre-registration is required using link below. Each adult must register individually in order to complete the required waivers—and if you’re bringing children\, you’ll need to fill out a waiver for each child as well. \nIf registration is full and you’d like to still participate\, please contact Kimani Keaton at kimani@bartramsgarden.org to be added to our waitlist. Parents/guardians must complete registration for individuals 18 and under. \nPlease also email Kimani immediately if you plan on cancelling your attendance\, so that we may make room for those on our waitlist. \nThank you! \nHealth reminders: We are in accordance with Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia’s current COVID-19 response levels. Please follow the link to stay up-to-date on our city’s protocols. If you are sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms\, please do not volunteer.

SUMMARY:Celebrate National Public Lands Day with a Playspace Build with TinyWPA
DESCRIPTION:Bartram’s Garden will serve as the signature event site for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) 2025\, a nationwide celebration of the places that connect us all. NPLD signature sites are selected because they embody the annual theme; this year’s theme\, “Our Home Outdoors”\, reminds us that public lands are more than just scenic spaces- they are where we gather\, grow\, and feel at home. This event is in partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation\, the nonprofit coordinator of National Public Lands Day for more than 30 years. \nJoin us in the afternoon for hands-on activities and community connection. Volunteers will work alongside staff and TinyWPA project leaders to support the construction and installation of the new Bartram’s Garden playful learning space through a number of different tasks\, including building\, painting\, digging\, and landscape work! No experience is necessary. Attendees will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a chance to win a pair of TEVAs. \nRegistered volunteers will meet at the Welcome Center promptly at 12:00 PM. TinyWPA project leaders will provide instructions and safety protocols for the day. Out of respect and safety for our staff and others\, please arrive on time. \nPLEASE NOTE: Each adult must register individually in order to complete the required waivers. Parents/guardians must complete registration for individuals 18 and under. Capacity is limited; participants MUST be pre-registered (using link below) in order to partake. Our volunteer events often reach capacity quickly. If this event is sold out\, you may contact Kimani Keaton at kimani@bartramsgarden.org to be added to the waitlist. If you are no longer able to attend\, please email Kimani as soon as possible\, so we can offer your spot to someone on the waitlist. Thank you! \nHealth reminders: We are in accordance with Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia’s current COVID-19 response levels. Please follow the link to stay up-to-date on our city’s protocols. If you are sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms\, please do not volunteer.
