SUMMARY:American Chestnut Tour
DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nIn the first half of the 20th century\, the American chestnut tree was all but eliminated from the forests of eastern North America by an imported fungal disease\, commonly known as chestnut blight. In cooperation with the American Chestnut Foundation\, Tyler Arboretum is host to a preservation orchard where surviving examples of this tree are raised and bred as part of the conservation effort to restore this iconic tree to eastern forests. Join expert Dan O’Keefe for a tour of the orchard to learn about the American chestnut tree\, its significance\, and efforts to achieve resistance to the fungal blight. September is harvest time in the Chestnut Orchard. Dan will have seeds for all!\nPlease arrive by 10:15 am and go directly to the Chestnut Orchard\, not Tyler’s Visitor Center. Directions to the Chestnut Orchard from Tyler’s main entrance: turn left onto Painter Road and travel 3/10 of a mile; the Orchard entrance will be on your right. (If you pass the fenced-in giant sequoia tree on your left\, you’ve gone slightly too far). A guide will be stationed at the entrance to direct you to the parking area.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED\nMEMBERS (sign in for your discount!): $5 per adult; $3 per teen ages 15-17\nAMERICAN CHESTNUT FOUNDATION MEMBERS: $5 per adult\nNON-MEMBERS: $21 per adult; $13 per teen ages 15-17. SUMMARY:What's Beyond the Fence Walk
DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES\nAre you new to Tyler or a visitor who has never explored the trails outside the deer fence? Join Tyler docent Dave Charlton for a monthly series of leisurely walks on the Tyler Trails. We will spend one to one and a half hours learning to find our way in the natural areas while discovering seasonal changes in the landscape and the flora and fauna that inhabit it. We’ll keep to easy walking trails where you can feel free to bring the family. As the days get shorter\, fall flowers begin to bloom in the forest and meadows. Wildlife is busy preparing for the cold months ahead\, and many birds start to migrate to warmer climates.\nCheck-in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and perhaps a walking stick. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. We recommend a carrier if you bring an infant or young child. \nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer\, a founding member of our docent program\, and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): $5 per adult\, $3 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under. An adult must accompany all children.\nNon-Members: $21 per adult\, $13 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under. The fee includes admission\, so feel free to spend the day at Tyler! An adult must accompany all children.\nGuest Pass Registrants (for non-members only): $5 per adult guest; $3 per child guest ages 3-17; no charge for children ages two and under. Please give your guest passes to the Visitor Center associate at check-in. An adult must accompany all children.\nREGISTER HERE
