DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS 18+\nFridays\, April 4\, 11\, 18\, & 25\, 2025\, 10 am to noon (classes also sold separately; see our website calendar)\nReady to take a deep dive into the natural world?\nNature journaling is a wonderful tool for observing and recording the flora and fauna around us. Utilizing our inner scientists\, writers\, and artists\, we will learn to capture the intricate details we find. These four classes will provide an encouraging and supportive atmosphere to learn the tools and techniques for observing\, recording\, and sketching our surroundings at Tyler Arboretum. Each class will explore a new area in the Arboretum.  Participants can sign up for a single class or enroll in the full 4-class series for a deeper dive into the subject.\nClass 1 will cover the basics of nature journaling\, including centering ourselves in our current setting\, learning to pay attention to and record different senses\, and beginning to record plants in our journals. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours.\nGATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. Join us for a relaxed exploration of the sights and sounds of spring at Tyler!\nThere’s more to discover in Tyler’s 650 acres. Join Dr. Richard Brenner for a walk through the various eco-communities at Tyler. From seasonal wonders\, living fossils\, meadows\, watery locations\, geological treasures\, conservation areas\, and unexpected wildlife\, Richard will expertly guide you to prime areas for an experience you will remember. Expertise from others will often be on hand for a more in-depth exploration. These rambles are for those who have a love for nature\, exploring\, and learning. Through training at Tyler\, the PA Master Naturalist program\, the Xerces Society Ambassador Training\, and his research\, he developed new tours for Tyler that blend environmental science and history. Bug spray and light-colored clothing are recommended for tick detection. Who knows what amazing discoveries are waiting for us? Come find out!\nLooking to spark your child’s curiosity about the outdoors? Join us for Family Explorers: What Lives at the Arboretum. This program invites families to explore nature using their senses to uncover its secrets. Each child will receive a Tyler journal to document their discoveries\, and there will be time at the end to create entries. Bring your journal to future Family Explorers tours to capture all the amazing moments of the season. DESCRIPTION:SUITABLE FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nExperience the magic of Tyler at night!\nJoin us for a hike under the light of the full moon. Hiking at night is a unique sensory experience. We will use our senses of hearing\, smell and touch to navigate the forest. Our experienced guides will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. We hope to see and hear some of the nocturnal wildlife that make a home in Tyler’s natural areas!\nThis moderately paced hike is for adults and teens who are comfortable walking 3+ miles on rocky\, uneven terrain\, which may include some distances up and down steep trails. A registered adult must accompany teens. Bring a handheld flashlight (please note that cell phones are not an acceptable source of light) and wear sturdy hiking boots. Feel free to bring binoculars to observe the moon.\nThis program starts after Tyler’s closing hours. The gates will open 15 minutes before the program begins and close promptly 10 minutes after the start time\, so please be on time. DESCRIPTION:Rain or shine\nAppropriate for Adults (18+) and Teens ages 12-17 \nJoin wildflower expert Dick Cloud on an informative two-hour hike that takes you through meadows\, woods\, and occasionally streamside. Although the focus is on plants\, we will talk about whatever we might see while we are out! In March\, we will look for newly emerging spring ephemerals as we listen to the chorus of frogs and birds during the warming spring days.\nAll levels of knowledge are welcome. There may be some periods of moderately paced hiking\, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. Feel free to bring a camera and a wildflower guide\, such as Peterson’s Field Guide or Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide\, if you’d like\, and enjoy a botanical-filled walk.  \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nPlease check in first at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide afterward. DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES\nJoin PA Master Naturalist Sue Fredrick to explore the lively world of Tyler’s rainwater ponds. Springtime at Tyler is full of sound\, with frogs calling loudly enough to be heard from the parking lot! We’ll visit some of the best spots to find frogs\, their eggs\, and wiggling tadpoles. Keep an eye out for other fascinating creatures\, like red-winged blackbirds and spiders\, patiently waiting for their next meal. This relaxed walk is perfect for curious nature lovers of all ages—come see what’s happening in and around the water!\nAbout your guide: Sue Fredrick is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. She is an experienced Tyler docent and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nThis program is best suited for elementary school-aged children with an accompanying adult\, although families and siblings of any age are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on Tyler’s trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Inclement weather will not cancel this tour. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours.\nGATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. Please be on time as the group leaves promptly from the parking lot at 8:10 am when the gate closes.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY BEFORE at 5:00 pm.\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): Adults: FREE\nNon-Members: Adults (ages 18-64):$18 per person; Seniors (ages 65+): $15 per person.
