DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS AGES 18+\nReady to take a deep dive into the natural world?\nNature Journaling is a wonderful tool for observing and recording the flora and fauna around us. Utilizing our inner scientist\, writer\, and artist\, we will learn to capture the intricate details we find. This class will provide an encouraging and supportive atmosphere to learn the tools and techniques for observing\, recording\, and sketching our surroundings at Tyler Arboretum.\nThis class will review the basics of nature journaling while introducing how to choose a subject to study and learning to observe and record our surroundings as the different pieces relate to one another.\nAbout the instructor: Meg Lemieur is a nature-focused illustrator based in Philadelphia\, whose mission is to celebrate the diversity\, interconnectedness\, and amazing feats of the natural world. Her illustrations have been published in numerous tabletop games\, in comic anthologies\, and as large-scale educational projects. She lends her skills to a variety of advocacy campaigns and\, in 2023\, was awarded the Woman of Environmental Arts award by Penn Future.\nNature Journaling Materials List:\nUnlined notebook with hardback or paper & a clipboard. I suggest a hardback so folks will have a hard surface to draw on while out in the field.\nYour favorite pencil\nA pencil sharpener\nAn eraser\nColored pencils (optional)\nWatercolor paints\, brush and water (optional)\nPractical materials to bring:\nA portable chair or blanket to sit on\nWater and a snack\nInsect repellent\nWeather-appropriate clothing – this may include layers such as a long-sleeved shirt\, a jacket\, a hat\, long pants\, and warm socks\, depending on the day.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.\nEach class will start with a short walk to a different area in the Arboretum. DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES\nJoin PA Master Naturalist Dave Charlton for a fun and easy hike on the trails outside our deer fence. Explore the outdoors\, discover cool plants and animals\, and see how nature changes with the seasons. Perfect for little explorers\, these walks are filled with surprises and are a great way to learn about the world around you. Bring the whole family and embark on an exciting nature adventure together!\nIn summer\, the trails are the coolest place in the Arboretum. The forest is full of life\, and its shaded paths provide relief from the heat. Summer blooming flowers appear\, and woodland creatures dart about enjoying the bounty of the season.\nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. He is a founding member of our docent program and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nThis program is best suited for elementary school children accompanied by adults; however\, families and siblings of all ages are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and\, if desired\, a walking stick.\nPLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. This leisurely-paced tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the plants and animals that thrive in and around the pond.\nAbout your guide: Sue Fredrick is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. Although the focus is on plants\, we will talk about whatever we might see while we are out! In July and August\, we hope to see a large variety of summer wildflowers. All levels of knowledge are welcome.\nPLEASE NOTE: To avoid the hottest part of the day\, July and August walks are scheduled for 11:00 am–1:00 pm\, with two exceptions: July 19\, 1-3 pm and August 16\, 1-3 pm\nThere may be some periods of moderately paced hiking\, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. Please be on time as the group leaves promptly from the parking lot at 8:10 am when the gate closes.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): Adults: FREE\nNon-Members: Adults (ages 18-64):$18 per person; Seniors (ages 65+): $15 per person. Keep your eyes peeled for brilliant bluebirds flitting about\, discover active nests with delicate eggs\, and maybe even spot fuzzy nestlings waiting for their next meal. Along the way\, learn about cavity-nesting birds and how you can help these feathered friends thrive.\nThis program is a perfect outing for curious kids and nature-loving grown-ups alike—bring your binoculars and a sense of wonder!\nWhen you arrive\, please check in first at the Visitor Center\, then meet your guide on the Visitor Center patio by 11:30 am.\nFor this tour\, we will be walking on grassy fields. It’s a low-key\, eye-opening way to experience nature at night—perfect for anyone curious about the natural world.\nBring a flashlight and your questions\, and be prepared to be surprised by the beauty and biodiversity that lives just beyond the porch light.\nImportant Information: This program takes place after Tyler’s regular hours. The front gate will open at 8:45 pm—please plan to arrive on time. Park in our overflow lot and check in with the staff associate.
