SUMMARY:Bird Box Workshop at the Discovery Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Glen Foerd in learning how to create a bird box for your own home or green space! Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Glen Foerd both share a mission of maintaining local ecosystems along the Schuylkill and Delaware River\, and this is where your stewardship can help. \nWe will begin the workshop with a bird tour around Discovery Center and discuss why bird boxes (also known as nesting boxes) are essential to birds due to the decline of natural habitats. Then\, each participant will have the opportunity to assemble a bird box kit (using hammers and nails) which you will be able to take home at the end of the session! Instructions for mounting and ongoing maintenance will be included as well. \nRegistration is required\, with 20 spots available (if you and a child or friend want to work on one bird box together\, you can sign up as one spot). \nClick here for Registration: https://forms.gle/8b8AjnfNnms1SeLw7

SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Freshwater Mussels!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. For February 7th\, we are joined by Fairmount Water Works and will take a look at our freshwater mussels that are nursing in the lake. We will learn how to measure them for data\, and conclude with sampling the water to view and identify our microscopic organisms. We’ll also have materials for optional watercolor painting with lake water. RSVP down below to secure your spot. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nClick this link to register your spot! https://tickets.audubon.org/events/37890d8b-579c-f7fa-6c53-f691f0bab1fa

SUMMARY:First Friday: Diving into Ocean Science
DESCRIPTION:This First Friday\, journey into the heart of our oceans as we explore the urgent challenges of water pollution\, microplastics\, and the incredible creatures that call the deep sea home. Plunge into the world of citizen science by testing out some of the instruments scientists use to monitor the health of our oceans\, and learn what we can all do to combat this global issue. \nHow well do you know the creatures of the deep? Test your knowledge by diving into an interactive digital guessing game\, “dissecting” a sculptural model of a shark from the collection\, and playing a very special game of Go Fish. \nCelebrate Citizen Science Month\nThis event is a part of Citizen Science Month! Explore how everyday people like YOU can make a real impact in environmental conservation. Learn about simple ways to contribute to ocean health and more through citizen science projects that help track pollution\, protect endangered species\, and much more. Our partners at Drexel University will be on hand to talk about what citizen science projects they’re currently working on and how you can help! \nAbout First Fridays\nSpark your curiosity while exploring the exhibits after hours! First Fridays bring together a myriad of activities covering everyday science\, historical oddities\, and everything in between. Grab your friends\, and kick off an evening of discovery\, surprise\, and a little nerdy fun. \nFirst Fridays at the Science History Institute are always free and open to the public. Attendees will receive a 10% discount to National Mechanics restaurant.

SUMMARY:Tavern Night
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Rittenhouse Town for Tavern Night! Outside the church\, the tavern was the most important institution in most towns. Taverns were used for political assemblies\, markets\, and\, of course\, a place to enjoy a good meal and learn the news of the day. Come join us as the buildings and grounds of our historic 18th-century homestead are transformed into a tavern from the 1770s\, where the simple pleasures of good food\, drink\, and fellowship collide. \nTavern Night will feature an evening of storytelling and merriment\, complete with 18th-century beer and cocktails and hearth-cooked food prepared in our Bake House. Patrons will be encouraged to learn the popular parlor games (like whist\, shut-the-box\, and farkle) and join in toasts and popular songs of the day. \nRegister for early registration discount\, walk-ins are welcome! Be sure to look at the food and drink selections below.

SUMMARY:Adopt-a-Tree Tree Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. \nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife\, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nRegistration is required as spaces are limited. This event is open to all ages. Please bring your own water and work gloves to the event. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
