SUMMARY:20s and 30s Schuylkill canal and river paddle social
DESCRIPTION:Beat the heat and connect with new friends kayaking 5 miles on this paddling excursion. Our trip is suitable for beginners and fun for experienced paddlers. We will meet at Fitzwater Station (Fitz)\, which includes an outdoor restaurant /bar and Port Providence Canoe and Kayak Rentals at 10 AM. After everyone has their gear we will have a short safety talk and we will than paddle up the canal where you may see turtles catching the sun\, local fishermen and other paddlers enjoying the day. After about 2 miles we will arrive at lock 60\, the terminus of the canal\, we will portage(carry) our boats a few hundred feet to the Schuylkill River for our return trip to our take out. We may find a swimming spot to stop at so a bathing suit is a good base layer choice. \nRental costs for boats\, paddle & PFD: Kayak $44\, tandem kayak $55\, tandem canoe $50. The AMC will kick in $20 toward rental costs for the first 10 people who sign up for the trip! Of course you can bring your own boat and gear for this trip with no fee involved. We will send more details and a suggested list of what to bring and wear to those who register. When the trip wraps and we return our equipment\, all are invited to continue the fun with a beer and a wide variety of good food on the deck of the Fitz. You can enjoy music\, a view of the canal and more fun with fellow kayakers. \nThe AMC prioritizes safety\, and so all participants must wear a life jacket while on the water. AMC is very safety conscious and so no flip flops will be allowed\, water shoes\, old sneakers are fine. You will also be asked to sign a trip waiver form. Seriously bad weather will cancel the trip. Check Meet Up 2 hours beforehand if the weather is questionable. \nPlease note: In order to comply with Pennsylvania Youth Protection Laws\, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. This policy applies for all events offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter as well as any other Chapter events within the state of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Winter Gulls at Glen Foerd
DESCRIPTION:Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter. \nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.\nPlease dress according to the expected weather. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away. \nNo binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra\, Cobbs Creek\, Cecil B. Morre\, Chestnut Hill\, Eastwick\, Falls of Schuylkill\, Fishtown\, Fox Chase\, Greater Olney\, Independence Library\, Logan\, Lovett Memorial\, Northeast Regional\, Oak Lane\, Parkway Central\, Richmond\, South Philly\, Torresdale\, West Philadelphia Regional\, and Widener. \nFor questions\, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.
