SUMMARY:Mausoleum Hill Community Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery is inviting the greater Philadelphia community to come together for a volunteer cleanup day at Mausoleum Hill on the Yeadon side of Mount Moriah Cemetery.\nVolunteers will work to restore Mausoleum Hill\, home to some of the cemetery’s most notable structures and the final resting places of people whose lives are woven into the fabric of Philadelphia history. Among those laid to rest there are Thomas Hugh Hoy\, a 19th-century liquor retailer and home builder who commissioned what remains the largest mausoleum in the cemetery; Thompson Carson\, a Civil War Army Sergeant who went on to become an undertaker and Mount Moriah board member; Jacob Nathan Hoeflich\, a Confederate Army private\, prisoner of war\, and Philadelphia hardware store owner; and John Hunter\, a saddle and harness manufacturer\, real estate investor\, and former president of the Mount Moriah Cemetery Association. Showing up to restore these grounds is one of the most meaningful ways the community can honor the people who are a part of this region’s history.\nAll members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. No experience is necessary. We encourage those interested to bring personal hand tools\, gloves\, and safety gear. We have a limited supply to lend\, so the more you can bring\, the better. Gas-powered weed whackers are especially helpful. Pack a lunch\, water\, sunscreen\, and bug spray.\nThis is a come-and-go event. Show up when you can\, stay as long as you’re able. Families\, scouts\, and service organizations are encouraged to join.
