SUMMARY:Virtual Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Event
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who may have missed our first session\, we are back by popular demand. This time we will be joined by the Executive Chef of Jeffery A Miller Catering to learn about their incredible move towards reuse. Then we will lean how businesses can use the tools in the Philly Unwrapped Toolkit and the final portion of the session will be a 50 minute participatory engagement session lead by Trash Academy. If you want less waste in your community\, less toxic packaging and more cost savings on the businesses side\, this is for you. \nREAD MORE: \nPhilly Unwrapped is a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Our work is focused on reducing single-use waste\, protecting public health\, and creating the conditions for reuse to become standard practice across our city’s businesses\, institutions\, and communities. \nWe invite you to register for our second virtual session on May 11th from 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM (A zoom link will be sent out when you register). This gathering is part of a six-part series that includes two additional in-person sessions. Each convening is an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding\, strengthen partnerships\, and move this work forward together. \nThis session will focus on two areas: \nFirst\, we will examine the business case for reuse. Participants will share real examples of organizations transitioning away from single-use packaging and serviceware\, including the financial savings\, operational considerations\, and the impact on customer health and community trust. \nSecond\, Trash Academy will lead a community engagement session where participants are invited to share their own questions\, barriers\, and considerations around reuse adoption. This is an important part of our process. Building a system that works for Philadelphia requires honest input from the organizations and communities who will be part of it. \nWe are asking anchor institutions\, businesses\, neighborhood associations\, CDCs\, BIDs\, chambers\, and community organizations to register\, attend\, and stay engaged. This work depends on sustained participation from across the city. \nBest Regards\, \nPartners and Collaborators\, \nECHO Systems \nThe Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia \nTrash Academy \nRethink Disposable\, a project of Clean Water Fund \nAnd the Philly Unwrapped Coalition \nFunding support provided by EPA Region 3 Thriving Communities.

SUMMARY:Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Philly Unwrapped\, come let your voice be heard about waste reduction and reuse in Philadelphia! \nPhiladelphia spends millions every year managing waste. Almost nothing prevents it. At the same time\, food and beverage businesses are required to purchase single-use packaging that increases operating costs and contributes to pollution that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities where waste is processed and incinerated. \nThere may be a better\, less wasteful way — and it saves money and protects public health. \nPhilly Unwrapped is bringing together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. \nWhat This Is\nJoin ECHO Systems\, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia\, Rethink Disposable’s Clean Water Fund and Trash Academy in this informative and engaging community event. \nLearn How to Use the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit — a free\, practical resource designed specifically for local food-sector businesses.\nCase studies show that businesses implementing reuse and waste prevention strategies save between $3\,000–$22\,000 annually\, while reducing trash volume\, improving operational efficiency\, and strengthening customer loyalty. Attendees will be able to join a funding consortium to demonstrate business need and interest in supporting a just transition toward reuse and waste prevention.\nThis event includes a community listening session. SUMMARY:Author Talk | Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Thea Riofrancos will be in conversation with Malcolm Harris about Riofranco’s latest book\, Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism\, an in-depth analysis into the growing industry of green technologies and the environmental\, social\, and political consequences of the mining it requires. \nDrawing on groundbreaking fieldwork in Chile\, Nevada\, and Portugal\, Riofrancos explores the environmental and social costs of the global race to expand lithium mining amid supply chain concerns. With haunting descriptions of vulnerable ecosystems\, she examines how mining harms landscapes\, provokes protest\, takes center stage in national politics\, and links countries on the peripheries of the world economy to huge corporations\, commodity markets\, and powerful investors. While an unregulated mining boom could inflict irreversible harm\, Riofrancos offers compelling ideas about how to harmonize climate action with social justice. \nThea Riofrancos is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College\, a Strategic Co-Director of the Climate and Community Institute\, and a fellow at the Transnational Institute. \nMalcolm Harris is the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California\, Capitalism\, and the World. His latest book is What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required

SUMMARY:Daylily Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Daylily is a feature length documentary that explores the devotion surrounding a plant that blooms for only one day. Through the personal stories of gardeners from different backgrounds\, the film reflects on the fleeting beauty of life and the quiet meaning found in moments that often pass unnoticed. By observing these flowers\, which appear briefly and are found everywhere\, the film invites viewers to recognize the same fragility\, value\, and presence within themselves. \nDuring the making of the film\, I traveled to nine U.S. states and two countries\, interviewing gardeners along the way\, and ultimately finished the project with a deeper appreciation for the small\, often overlooked moments we pass by every day. One of the most meaningful moments in the film centers on what many people casually call “ditch lilies.” Flowers that are easy to ignore slowly become something an entire community learns to truly see and celebrate. \nAnother powerful story comes from the history of daylily hybridizers and the ongoing efforts of today’s growers who are shaping the future of the plant. \nWorking on this project changed my perspective on life\, and I hope it can offer the same inspiration to those who watch it as it did for me while creating it. This film brings warmth to winter and allows audiences to experience the peace and unexpected gifts that flowers bring to us all.

SUMMARY:2nd Hand Circus Scrap Night : Sustainable Love
DESCRIPTION:Love Letters to Old Things\nA Sustainability Valentine’s Scrap Night \nOn the eve of Valentine’s Day\, 2nd Hand Circus invites you to fall back in love — with the things that have been left behind. \nScrap Night is a curated evening of short circus works made from thrifted\, passed-down\, recycled\, or once-forgotten objects. Eight circus artists each receive (or bring) a secondhand item and transform it into a brand-new act. Think juggling\, contortion\, aerial\, fashion experiments\, and delightful curiosity — all sparked by old stuff with a story. \nThis Scrap Night leans into Valentine’s Day through a sustainability lens:\n💘 loving what you already have\n💘 repairing instead of replacing\n💘 choosing care\, creativity\, and reuse \nBecause sustainability is an act of love — for objects\, for people\, and for the future. \n2nd Hand Circus is a new performance company creating spaces for creative ingenuity rooted in sustainability. Scrap Night is our playground and our laboratory: a low-stakes\, high-curiosity experiment asking artists to think outside the box and make something meaningful from what already exists. \nWhat can you make from what’s been left behind?\nCome watch these artists find out. \nFebruary 13\n📍 Thunderbird Hall — 2856 Frankford Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19134 (at E Cambria St) NOTE: This event is NOT at Thunderbird Salvage!\n🕗 Show at 8pm | Doors at 7:30pm \n🎟 Tickets: $35–$75 (all tickets includes two drink tickets)\nNOTAFLOF options available at the door\nBar on site + food available \nBefore or after the show\, browse the 2nd Hand Circus Thrift Store and explore Thunderbird Hall’s estate items\, surplus\, tools\, and legendary $2-per-pound bins. \nAccessibility note: Thunderbird Hall is up one full flight of stairs with a landing halfway. \nCome for the circus.
