SUMMARY:Winter Gulls at Glen Foerd
DESCRIPTION:Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter. \nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.\nPlease dress according to the expected weather. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away. \nNo binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra\, Cobbs Creek\, Cecil B. Morre\, Chestnut Hill\, Eastwick\, Falls of Schuylkill\, Fishtown\, Fox Chase\, Greater Olney\, Independence Library\, Logan\, Lovett Memorial\, Northeast Regional\, Oak Lane\, Parkway Central\, Richmond\, South Philly\, Torresdale\, West Philadelphia Regional\, and Widener. \nFor questions\, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Owl Howl: Section D
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Wednesday\, February 7\, 2025 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, February 21).\nAbout the Instructors:\nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.\nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds.

SUMMARY:Weathering the Winter
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 1 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm\nWeathering the Winter \nWinters were harsh in the 18th century\, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built\, food preserved and cooked\, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 1st to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year. Watch as meat and other provisions are cured and preserved in the Smokehouse\, check out a cooking demonstration in the Summer Kitchen\, and more! \nAll ages; Free.

SUMMARY:Spotlight Tour: Is There Still Water In That Well? The Restoration of the 18th & 19th Century Well and Wood Well Pump at the Cliveden Kitchen Dependency
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Transcending Thresholds initiative to study\, restore and interpret the service spaces at Cliveden\, this innovative project will conserve and restore the early well to function. Cliveden Preservation Director Libbie Hawes and architectural conservator Andy Palewski will discuss the construction and technology that provided necessary water for the kitchen and household in the 18th and 19th centuries. The project included removing three sections of wood well pump\, restoring the 40-foot-deep stone well shaft and removing the objects and mud at the bottom. The effort now focuses on restoring the pump sections and forged hardware\, including recreating the technology that brings groundwater to the surface for human use. This program will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen and well and a look at the pump parts being restored\, come prepared to walk around the site. \nGeneral admission is $20; $10 for 19119 and 19144 residents. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of at the Cliveden Barn. \nThe Well Restoration Project is supported by a Keystone Construction Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. Transcending Thresholds has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

SUMMARY:Cultivating a Native Lawn
DESCRIPTION:Traditional turfgrass lawns provide little benefit to native biodiversity\, are significant sources of air and water pollution\, and require huge investments of time to maintain. In a world grappling with the climate crisis\, every action counts\, and adopting a new lawn paradigm that champions native biodiversity in your own backyard is a powerful way to take control of your environmental impact. Todd Bittner\, plant ecologist\, will discuss a visionary lawn paradigm shift – one where lush\, low-growing native grasses and forbs take center stage. Explore the journey behind Cornell Botanic Gardens’ native lawn\, from its inception to the multitude of benefits it brings\, and the invaluable lessons it has taught us.\nThis program takes place online on Thursday\, November 7\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nTodd Bittner is the Director of Natural Areas for the Cornell Botanic Gardens. The Gardens’ Natural Areas program protects and manages a system of preserves spanning nearly 3\,700 acres across 40 natural areas. The preserves encompass one-third of Cornell’s iconic campus landscape\, including two massive gorges\, scenic Beebe Lake\, and a renowned wildflower garden\, which hosts the Gardens’ “native lawn” that was featured in the New York Times in 2023. Todd leads the protection and stewardship of these lands and the Gardens’ native biodiversity conservation efforts. Todd also directly educates students and the public on natural heritage topics and is a lecturer in the School of Plant Science. Todd is also a conservation scientist with the Center for Plant Conservation\, and in 2020\, was named a “Conservation Champion” by the Center.

SUMMARY:Adopt-a-Tree Tree Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. \nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife\, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nRegistration is required as spaces are limited. This event is open to all ages. Please bring your own water and work gloves to the event. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
