DESCRIPTION:Working with the healing power of plants can help to decrease stress and anxiety\, process grief\, and improve overall well-being. Combining eco-mindfulness and creative activities\, the Nurture with Nature series invites participants to learn about the uses and roles of specific native plants through the lens of natural cycles. \nJune’s Nurture with Nature session will have participants crafting their own rosemary smoking bundle using beautiful native plants! \nDuring this immersive experience\, you’ll learn the art of collecting\, wrapping\, drying\, and properly fumigating natural materials. We’ll journey through the fascinating origins of smoking blends\, exploring their diverse uses across cultures and discussing the best ways to incorporate them into your daily life. \nAttendees will have the chance to select fragrant native plants from our garden to include in a personalized blend — and learn about their cultural significance and how to care for them. \nWorkshops are led by Kate Irvine\, a licensed Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner and mixed media artist. Participants are welcome to attend one\, some\, or all four 2025 sessions. \nThe June session will take place in Bala Green\, one of two green burial habitats at Laurel Hill West.

SUMMARY:Beethoven's Fifth with The Philadelphia Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Pack a picnic and join us for a night of Beethoven’s music under the stars as The Philadelphia Orchestra\, led by Lina Gonzalez-Granados\, returns to TD Pavilion at the Mann on June 17. The evening will begin with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture\, which is inspired by the story of Roman general Coriolanus and was written for Austrian dramatist Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy\, Coriolan. This will be followed by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4\, with pianist Jonathan Biss playing alongside the Fabulous Philadelphians. Following intermission\, we will be treated to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5\, one of his most famous symphonies with its iconic four-note motif that has been adapted in pop culture in everything from the Electric Light Orchestra to Fantasia 2000 to the Judge Judy theme music. \nTickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.com or the Mann Ticket Office.

The festival fundraiser benefits native plant restoration at award- winning High School Park. The event\, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, will feature for sale the work of more than 20 artisans who create jewelry\, home décor\, ceramics\, fiber and apparel\, glass\, photography\, wood\, and many other hand-crafted items.\nThe festival also features a children’s craft and activity area that includes a children’s art center run by Cheltenham Center for the Arts. In addition to the children’s activities there is also a native plant sale and plenty of food\, beer\, refreshments and music.\nProceeds from Arts in the Park support the native plant restoration management of the four ecosystems in 11- acre High School Park.

SUMMARY:Joiri Minaya: Venus Flytrap
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar presents a site-specific\, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden\, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell\, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom\, extraction\, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden. \nMuch like a Venus flytrap\, the plant this project is named for\, Joiri Minaya’s practice often employs beauty before its bite\, utilizing sensuality\, lush florals and hues to invite deeper reflection on thornier aspects of history and the impacts of colonialism. For this project\, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series\, custom textile elements\, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram’s Garden. \nEstablished in 1728\, Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America\, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia’s history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for Indigenous trade to the role of founder John Bartram in popularizing Eurocentric notions of “modern botany\,” Bartram’s Garden can be understood as a microcosm for the ongoing colonial experiment. With Venus Flytrap\, Minaya extends her longrunning interest in foregrounding the histories and possibilities of local and Indigenous plant life. Together\, Minaya and Cassell seek to reveal hidden histories of labor and anti-colonial resistance buried in the grounds of Bartram’s Garden and historic Kingsessing\, and their echoes across the Americas.

DESCRIPTION:This is a unique hike for the serious hiker: an amazing loop-hike connecting various preserved lands and taking you from the creek through woods\, fields\, and farmland. We will hike through the Camp Woods\, Armentrout Preserve\, Briar Hill Preserve\, Prophecy Creek Park\, Willow Lake Farm\, and the Green Ribbon Trail. This hike is 6 miles long and should last 2.5-3 hours. Due to the length of this hike\, this is for experienced hikers who can keep pace with the group. Do you want to take your neighborhood or park walk to the next level but not sure where to start? DESCRIPTION:It’s that exciting time of the year again when our ponds fill to the brim with squirming tadpoles! \nJoin Riverbend’s Educators for this fascinating annual rite of spring that happens right here at Riverbend. Learn about the lifecycle of the amphibians that live at the Preserve and see the tadpoles in action. This fun event is open to individuals and to families with children of all ages. \nGuests will explore the preserve and visit activity stations to learn all about frogs. Depending on the weather and other natural factors\, we may see a lot of tadpoles or none at all\, but there will be lots to enjoy at Riverbend. Guests are encouraged to visit at their own pace and stay as long as they wish. \nThis event is rain or shine so please dress for the weather! \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $10 per person. We recognize that for some families this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
