SUMMARY:Ornitherapy: For Your Mind\, Body\, and Soul
DESCRIPTION:Finding balance in our busy and pressured lives can be challenging\, but if we allow an appreciation of birds and nature to slow us down we improve our overall well-being. Birds are gateways into deeper experiences with nature\, magnifying these benefits. Through the mindful observations of birds and their habitats\, we learn not only about them\, but about ourselves.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Saturday\, April 27\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nHolly is an avid birder\, educator\, writer\, and lecturer\, who has a passion for bird conservation. She is an instructor for National Audubon and the American Birding Association and is the lead data reviewer for eBird in Pennsylvania. Holly believes in the powerful benefits nature holds for our wellbeing and is lead author on a book on the subject\, aptly called Ornitherapy: For Your Mind\, Body\, and Soul\, guiding readers into deeper connections to the birds around them.

SUMMARY:The Secret Lives of Spring Wildflowers: Section B
DESCRIPTION:Skunk cabbage\, bloodroot\, and trout lilies are among the first signs of spring and warmer weather ahead. Spring ephemerals and wildflowers must complete part of their life cycle before the tree canopy leafs out\, reducing light levels at the forest floor. These plants face many challenges including unpredictable weather and pollinator availability. Spring wildflowers have special adaptations to overcome these challenges\, and intricate relationships with pollinators and seed dispersers. Learn more about these wildflowers\, their life histories\, and plant-insect interactions\, and look for them during a guided walk in the gardens.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Saturday\, April 27\, 2024 (Rain Date: Sunday\, April 28).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEllen Lake\, PhD\, is the Director of Conservation and Research at Mt. Cuba Center. She taught environmental education and was the Education Director at the Brandywine and Red Clay Valley Associations. Ellen has a master’s degree in Entomology and Ph.D. in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware\, where she researched biological control of mile-a-minute weed and how to integrate weed management techniques to restore plant communities. Ellen has extensive experience researching insect-plant interactions\, including work for the USDA in the Greater Everglades ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Footsteps of the First People: Guided Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Start your day with a peaceful hike and meditation along the Trolley Trail!\n\nDATE\nSaturday\, March 16 \n\n\n\nTIME\n9:30 am – 11:30 am \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nBelmont Plateau \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape nature healer Krista Nelson for a two-mile guided hike and meditation along the Trolley Trail on Saturday\, March 16 from 9:00-11:30 AM. This hike will help you rekindle your love of nature and find strength and companionship in a community of fellow nature lovers. \nAs a sixth-generation Lenape grandmother\, Krista honors the Lenape tradition of interconnectedness and reverence for nature. A Lenape language keeper\, Krista is working to revitalize this endangered indigenous language and unlock embedded codes to Lenape culture for a people and a planet in dire need of decolonizing hearts and minds. \nAs we hike\, we’ll stop to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us to several small tributary creeks\, where we will meditate alongside the rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. We will add to the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous humming and whistling – a way to show our love for the water. Krista calls this practice of listening to the water and reciprocating with sound “Creek Drinking” (not literally of course!). Finally\, Krista will lead us in a nature element ritual as we celebrate the spring equinox – a time of importance to the Lenape as it welcomes spring and new beginnings. \nThis event will connect you to nature and allow you to tune your breath to the creek’s flow so you can let troublesome thoughts wash away downstream. It will also help you develop a deeper appreciation for the Lenape – the first inhabitants and stewards of these lands. \nEstimated distance: about two miles\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \n**This event is part of our West Park Program Pack – a bundle of three distinct West Park programs offered for a discounted rate. It can be registered for individually (below) or as part of the Program Pack. If interested in registering as part of the pack\, visit this website. Program Pack space is limited. Registration ends February 24 or when spots fill – whichever comes first.** \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe hike is roughly two miles over mainly hilly trails.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nBring water (drinking water is not available in the park)\, a snack\, and if you would find it helpful\, a small meditation cushion or towel that you can carry with you during the hike.\nUnfortunately\, there are no bathrooms along the hike route so please plan accordingly.\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Belmont Ave and Belmont Mansion/Fairmount Park Drive – a half-mile walk from the start. The closest Indego bike station is at Parkside and Belmont Ave – also a half-mile walk from the start. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org
