SUMMARY:Mindful Birding
DESCRIPTION:Mindful birding combines observing birds with mindfulness techniques\, creating a practice that incorporates heightened awareness. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus. Instead\, the intention is to slow down and notice the world around us\, using birds as our guides. During this guided experience\, you’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding you.   \nTechniques and prompts accompany this gently guided walk and/or “sit spot” experience\, which strive to enhance our observation skills\, promoting a deepening of our experiences with birds around us. This in turn amplifies the multitude of benefits birds provide to our overall wellbeing. Participants will also be provided “Ornitherapy Journals” and select prompts to increase observation and awareness and provide a takeaway from the experience.    \nNo prior experience with birds or mindfulness practice are necessary to attend.    \nThe benefits of mindful birding:   \n\nEnjoy a reprieve from life stressors and pressures.  \n\n\nStimulate and promote a more positive overall wellbeing\, mind and body.  \n\n\nGain enhanced sensory awareness (sight\, sound\, smell\, touch).  \n\n\nBetter understand birdlife through intentional observation.  \n\n\nEnhance observation skills\, in turn building a stronger foundation for overall bird identification.  \n\n\nIncrease self-reflection through birds and the natural world.  \n\nabout the instructor   \nHolly Merker has a background in art therapy but\, today\, connects nature and birds to achieve the same result of mental\, physical\, and emotional wellbeing through her work in nature-based wellness practices. As an award-winning author\, mindful birding leader\, wellness counselor\, mindfulness mentor\, podcaster\, certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide (ANFT)\, and Forest Therapy Practitioner (FT Hub)\, Holly offers gently guided experiences that incorporate accessibility and for all skill levels\, which are designed to be welcoming and inclusive to all people. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:Tunes on the Terrace: Arcana Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:featuring the works of Pauline Oliveros  \nIn collaboration with Bowerbird\, Stoneleigh is pleased to present the Arcana New Music Ensemble performing the music of Pauline Oliveros’s works The Well and The Gentle. Pauline Oliveros’ (1932-2016) life as a composer\, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others’ sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the ’50s\, she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers\, artists\, and poets gathered in San Francisco. In the ’60s\, she influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation\, meditation\, electronic music\, myth\, and ritual.    \nWritten between 1982-1983 and commissioned by Philadelphia’s Relâche Ensemble\, The Well and The Gentle are two of Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations – text-based\, intuitive pieces rooted in listening with minimal instructions.    \nGates open at 5:30 PM. Come early to picnic on the lawn or wander the summer garden. The concert begins at 7:00pm on the Pool House terrace. All tickets are general admission and include seating.  \nPlease note: the rain date for this event is Sunday\, June 14.  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nPauline Oliveros’ (1932-2016) was the recipient of four Honorary Doctorates and among her many recent awards were the William Schuman Award for Lifetime Achievement\, Columbia University\, New York\, NY\, The Giga-Hertz-Award for Lifetime Achievement in Electronic Music from ZKM\, Center for Art and Media\, Karlsruhe\, Germany and The John Cage award from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts.  \nOliveros was Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, Troy\, NY\, and Darius Milhaud Artist-in-Residence at Mills College. She founded “Deep Listening®\,” which came from her childhood fascination with sounds and from her works in concert music with composition\, improvisation and electro-acoustics. She described Deep Listening as a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life\, of nature\, of one’s own thoughts as well as musical sounds.  \n“Deep Listening is my life practice\,” Oliveros explained\, simply. Oliveros founded Deep Listening Institute\, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation\, now the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer\, Troy\, NY. Her creative work is currently disseminated through The Pauline Oliveros Trust and the Ministry of Maåt\, Inc.  \nArcana New Music Ensemble is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians dedicated to presenting interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional places. Founded in 2015\, the chamber ensemble is dedicated to contemporary classical music performing works by living composers and to reexamine music from the past\, often focusing on composers whose work has been overlooked. A hallmark of Arcana’s programming is its frequent use of portrait concerts\, which allow the ensemble to explore a composer’s work in depth. These programs balance music by widely recognized composers with works by those who are less well known or historically underrepresented.

SUMMARY:Nature as Healer: A (Grief) Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“The people cannot be healed until the land is healed. The land cannot be healed until the people are healed by the land.” – Martin Prechtel\, author  \nNature can be a great healer for the heartaches we all experience along our journey. Join Naila Francis\, founder of This Hallowed Wilderness\, for a writing workshop to explore the restorative power of nature (right around Earth Day). \nTogether\, we will walk through the shady woods and sunny meadows of Hildacy Preserve\, listening to our inner voices\, on this inspiring nature immersion that also invites us into reciprocal relationship with the land and wildlife. \nBring a notebook and a writing instrument for this workshop. (We will also have some available.) \nOur stroll through the woods will be silent\, followed by some meditative time beside the flowing Crum Creek\, and quiet reflection. \nYou will be invited to share whatever you wish in a “sacred circle\,” but this is not required. The intent of this event is to bring people together\, whatever their losses and struggles\, and to connect with others and the natural world at their own comfort level. \nAbout our instructor: Naila is a grief coach and death midwife who companions people on their grief journey through multiple spaces and practices\, including meditations in nature and the written word.

SUMMARY:Spring Awakening: Forest Bathing for Wellness
DESCRIPTION:As winter loosens its quiet hold\, the forest begins awakening. Step into this tender moment of early spring during this slow\, sensory-rich walk through the woods. Instructor Stacey Vinci’s gentle\, heart-centered approach aims to soothe the nervous system\, rekindle the spirit\, and restore balance in a time when many of us move too quickly to notice the beauty at our feet.  \nAll walks are invitational and trauma-informed\, offering space for whatever you bring and however you arrive. We’ll close our time together sharing a calming tea tasting and light snacks—an unhurried moment to savor the simple gifts of the season.  \nAbout the instructor: Stacey Vinci is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a certified forest therapy guide through the Association for Nature and Forest Therapy. Stacey has been in practice for 14 years supporting individuals\, communities\, and family systems in generational healing\, growth\, and change. Stacey facilitates embodied wellness through somatic\, trauma-informed\, and nature-based offerings.
