SUMMARY:Scenic Schuylkill Century Recreational Bicycle Ride 2025 on 9/7
DESCRIPTION:Scenic Schuylkill Century Recreational Bicycle Ride 2025 on 9/7 \nEvent Website: www.ScenicCentury.org \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nHundreds of Cyclists to Ride in the Scenic Schuylkill Century Recreational Bicycle Ride on Sunday\, September 7\, 2025 \nEach year\, hundreds of cyclists take part in the Scenic Schuylkill Century\, a one-day recreational bike ride\, not a race. Routes offered from 21 to 101 miles through Philadelphia\, Montgomery\, and Chester Counties. The event\, organized by the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP)\, will be held on Sunday\, September 7\, 2025. \nThe fully supported ride starts and finishes at AIM Academy (1200 River Road\, Conshohocken)\, located directly on the Schuylkill River Trail across from the SEPTA Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Miquon Station. \nRegistration begins at 6am. Rolloffs commence at 7am or slightly later at the choice of the riders. \nEvent Highlights\n• Seven routes to choose from: three mostly flat\, paved trail routes for casual riders; four longer\, more challenging road routes for experienced cyclists.\n• Rest stops at AIM Academy\, Lloyd Hall (No. 1 Boathouse Row)\, the Phoenixville YMCA\, and Ridge Fire Company in Spring City\, Chester County.\n• Coffee\, bagels\, and fresh fruit at the start; fresh fruit and homemade baked goods at all rest stops; a celebratory pizza party at the finish.\n• On-course support: SAG drivers patrolling the routes and marshals stationed at key locations.\n• Scenic highlights include:\n• Main Street Manayunk\, West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Arboretum\, MLK Drive\, Fairmount Park mansions\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and six Schuylkill River crossings—including the Manayunk Viaduct and Strawberry Mansion Bridge.\n• Some of the most picturesque stretches of the Schuylkill River between Philadelphia and Phoenixville.\n• Valley Forge National Historical Park\, four historic covered bridges\, and Chester County’s scenic horse country with rolling hills above Phoenixville. \nRain or shine. Helmets are required. \nAbout the Event\nThe Scenic Schuylkill Century Recreational Bicycle Ride has been a Philadelphia cycling tradition for more than 25 years. This unique bicycle ride is organized by volunteers\, not by a for profit company. At the end of each year\, BCP donates event proceeds to local cycling-related organizations\, such as the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and Neighborhood Bike Works\, not to unrelated charities. \nAbout the Organizers\nThe Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting cycling in the greater Philadelphia area through a year-round calendar of daily rides\, seasonal events\, and educational programs. SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Researching Building Ghosts: A Talk and Booksigning
DESCRIPTION:Join author Molly Lester and photographer Michael Bixler to discuss their new book\, Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, November 2024)\, and the ghosts that reveal new truths and provocations about the changing city. For this engaging event\, Lester and Bixler explain and explore “Building ghosts\,” the idiosyncratic remnants or imprints of demolished buildings\, left behind on the sides of neighboring structures. Mostly seen in older Northeastern cities with rowhomes or party-wall adjacencies\, they can reveal remarkable things\, such as an old staircase going up the side of a building or plaster traces left by a set of shelves in an attic gable. As history in our changing cities is erased and remade\, these ghosts can be ephemeral or enduring. They can be quickly revealed and replaced in a neighborhood seeing rapid change or unveiled and never re-covered in a neighborhood that has not seen new construction in substantial time. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania proudly offers this evening of discovery onsite and virtually with the book available for purchase onsite.
