SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

SUMMARY:Community Weeds: A participatory workshop on practical approaches for controlling invasive plants\, planting for resilience\, and adapting to change
DESCRIPTION:Join panelists Tama Wong\, Andrew Conboy\, and Mike Van Clef in a participatory discussion of common sense\, practical\, and real-life approaches to controlling invasive plants\, and designing\, establishing\, maintaining and restoring vibrant\, resilient landscapes. Each panelist brings a different but overlapping expertise to the topic (forest\, meadows and edge habitats\, watersheds)\, and a shared passion for the health and resilience of the flora and fauna of our Mid-Atlantic region. \nYou will be invited to share knowledge\, build community\, and learn from real-world case studies—highlighting both successes and setbacks. You will leave with fresh ideas\, practical strategies\, and a deeper understanding of how to control disruptive plants while restoring balance to landscapes ranging from highway medians to backyard gardens. \nTopics will include the difference between ‘maintenance’ and ‘stewardship’; finding value on roadsides and in vacant lots; use / misuse of herbicides; the ‘addition by subtraction’ approach to invasive plant management; mulching and mowing; native plant selection; and so much more. \nParticipants will include regional vegetation managers\, landscape and municipal professionals\, home gardeners\, small scale farmers\, native species reclamation enthusiasts\, and more. \nThis interactive forum thrives on collaboration\, so come ready to share your own challenges and insights! This program has been submitted for 3 LA CES CEUs.

SUMMARY:TIMELINE
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia Sculptors\, in partnership with Women for Greater Philadelphia\, announces the outdoor sculpture exhibition TIMELINE at historic Laurel Hill Mansion in East Fairmount Park. The show opens with a free public reception on Friday\, July 18\, 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nTIMELINE is a dynamic group exhibit that offers a wide-ranging look at the Laurel Hill site and its layered history along the Schuylkill River. Artists\, selected by jurors Nancy Agati and Rachel Zimmerman\, proposed works that respond to the complex timeline of the property\, the mansion itself\, and the many individuals who have lived on\, cared for\, and shaped the land. Laurel Hill Mansion sits on lands that were inhabited for millennia by the Lenni Lenape. \nThe land was acquired by William Penn in 1682\, and the mansion\, built in 1767\, has undergone numerous changes in structure\, ownership\, and use\, from the colonial era to the present. SUMMARY:WLS - Mt. Cuba’s Resilient Tree Canopy (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Trees are the backbone of any landscape. With current pest and disease threats and the predicted change in our climate\, we must adapt our practices to protect our trees from these stressors. Please join Mt. Cuba staff as we discuss our strategies for preparing our garden’s tree canopy for a changing climate. We will share the thought process and models used to shape our current strategy\, our ongoing data collection and tree monitoring tactics\, and how we intend to use the information gathered to implement practices that will help nurture a resilient future tree canopy. This program is part of the online Mt. Cuba Lecture Series.\nThis program takes place online Wednesday\, February 19\, 2025.\nAbout the Instructors:\nNicole DeLizzio is the Arborist Assistant at the Mt. Cuba Center. She holds a BS in Agriculture and Natural Resources with a minor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Delaware. Nicole is an ISA certified arborist. In addition to co-teaching the Ecological Arboriculture course with the rest of the arboriculture team\, she can be found sharing her combined passion for trees and art in pyrography\, or the art of woodburning. One of Nicole’s favorite ecological gardening concepts is to allow trees to decay in place\, when it is safe to do so\, to be utilized by wildlife.\nGeorge Coombs\, Director of Horticulture at Mt. Cuba Center\, leads a team of horticulturists\, arborists\, and grounds maintenance technicians who cultivate and improve formal and naturalistic gardens and play a pivotal role in the implementation of Mt. Cuba Center’s long-range master plan. George produced award winning reports on native plant research as the former Manager of Horticultural Research at Mt Cuba Center and introduced four new Coreopsis cultivars. He holds a degree of Plant Science from the University of Delaware with a focus in landscape horticulture.

SUMMARY:The Secret Math of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked up at a tree and wondered how tall it was\, how old it was\, or how much carbon it had sucked out of the atmosphere? Join LandHealth educator Anisa George and Emily Bell\, graduate of the iTree Academy\, to learn some old school and new school ways of calculating the hidden value of a tree. We’ll be heading to the west side of FDR\, where some very impressive trees are threatened by the city’s plan for the park. Together we’ll do some citizen science and try to elaborate on the value of some of the most impressive trees in our urban forest. \nAll ages welcome. SUMMARY:Cobbs Creek Park Ambassadors: Save the Native Flowers at Little Whitby Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Little Whitby Meadow is a hidden gem in Cobbs Creek Park. Since Audubon PA began restoring the Meadow\, native flowers have been making a comeback. These plants are crucial to the survival of our butterflies\, bees\, and birds. Unfortunately\, this resurgence of native flora is being threatened by invasive Wild hop (Humulus japonicus)\, which is smothering everything in its path! Lend a helping hand to our native plants by pulling out some invasive Wild hop with the Cobbs Creek Park Ambassadors! \nLocation: Meet at the entrance of the Little Whitby Meadow (Start at Cobbs Creek Pkwy & Whitby Ave. Head West on Whitby Ave.\, towards Yeadon\, for about 500 yards. The gated entrance to Meadow is on the North side of the street. Look for the “Cobbs Creek Park Ambassador” sign.) \nNote:\n– All equipment (work gloves\, bags and trowels) will be provided.\n– It is strongly recommended that you wear long pants and close-toed shoes\, as we will be working in areas with thick vegetation. A long-sleeved\, lightweight shirt is also advisable.
