DESCRIPTION:The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and William Way invite you to celebrate National Coming Out Day with a guided hike and an outdoor open mic on Saturday\, October 10th from 12-3pm. \nLed by an inspiring environmental educator\, this guided hike will focus on the scientific exploration of queerness and gender fluidity in nature. The hike will be about an hour long on the trails at the Schuylkill Center. Weather conditions can impact trail conditions\, which are sometimes narrow or rocky. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable\, weather appropriate clothing. There is free onsite parking and restrooms at the Schuylkill Center.\nThe guided hike will then be followed by light refreshments and an open mic at the outdoor amphitheater\, hosted by Mary Groce. This open mic is an opportunity for participants to present on “Coming Out in Nature” – sharing coming out stories\, performing a song\, reciting a poem\, whatever they like! \nThis event is free to attend. SUMMARY:Walking in William Still’s Steps: Hike + Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hike in West Fairmount Park that explores the history of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia.\n\nDate\nSaturday\, October 3 \n\n\n\nTime\n10:00 am – 2:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation\nSheep Barn \nChamounix Drive\nPhiladelphia PA 19131 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and UGR3DAY Underground Railroad Experiences\, Inc. on Saturday\, October 3 from 10 AM–2 PM for a 3.5-mile Underground Railroad history hike and talk in West Fairmount Park. \nOn his 205th birthday\, we honor the “Father of the Underground Railroad”\, William Still (born October 7\, 1821)\, and all those freedom seekers who traversed the lands of present-day Fairmount Park. Join us for a hike through West Fairmount Park in the morning followed by a community conversation in the afternoon. \nThe 3.5-mile loop hike will visit places of historical significance\, some with connections to the Underground Railroad. Stops include Ridgeland Mansion (c. 1762)\, Boelsen Cottage (c. 1684)\, Belmont Mansion (c. 1742)\, and physical remnants of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad\, which was a means of clandestine conveyance for freedom seekers in the mid-19th century. \nThe hike will begin at the sheep barn\, located near Ridgeland Mansion\, at 10 AM and will return there for a lunchtime community conversation (optional). It will feature immersive experiences led by historic storyteller and “Conductor” Dee Patterson of UGR3DAY Underground Railroad Experiences Inc. and Gilletta “Gigi” McGraw\, portraying free Black woman Cornelia Wells. \nWe will return to the sheep barn at the end of the hike\, and from 1–2 PM\, there will be light refreshments available (participants are also welcome to bring a bagged lunch) and time to connect and reflect with others about the hike experience. Participants will also be welcome to share out about their hike experience if they wish. \nPreview of the hike route HERE. The 3.5-mile hike will take a little less than three hours to complete with multiple stops along the way. Please note\, this hike takes place mostly on hilly\, single-track dirt trails with rocks and roots (moderate-strenuous exertion). There is also some walking through open parkland and grassy areas. \n*SPECIAL NORTH TO FREEDOM FILM SCREENING*: On the Wednesday before the William Still Walk\, we will be having a virtual showing of the documentary\, North to Freedom. North to Freedom is an original documentary from WSKG Public Television and filmmaker Brian Frey. It features interviews with Conductor Dee Patterson\, who will be leading the William Still Walk. While the documentary primarily examines the important role Upstate New York played in the Underground Railroad\, it also touches on the impact of William Still and provides good context and background ahead of the hike. The film screening is meant to serve as a supplement to the hike but is not required ahead of the walk. Register for the film screening. \nWILLIAM STILL WALK SCHEDULE \n-10 AM-1 PM: Guided hike\n-1-2 PM: Community conversation** (optional) \n**Participants are welcome to stay for the community conversation after the hike. There will be some light snacks/refreshments available during this portion\, and attendees are welcome to bring their own  \nbagged lunch as well (there will be a place to store it during the hike). \nTICKETS: Free\, registration required and donations appreciated* \n*Please note\, there is a limited capacity for this event. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend. \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe hike is roughly 3.5 miles in length\, with a combination of open parkland and hilly trails (moderate to strenuous exertion). It will take a little less than three hours to complete.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 10 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms at the start/end of the hike and a couple of porta-potties available along the hike route.\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nIf staying for the community conversation after the hike\, we will have light refreshments available. Participants are also welcome to bring a bagged lunch (there will be a place to store it during the hike).\nSpace is limited in this event and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is a parking lot next to the sheep barn with limited parking. There is additional overflow parking at the Chamounix Drive parking lot across the street. If using this lot\, please enter from the entrance across from the sheep barn\, and a staff person will direct you on where to park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Ford and Cranston Road (a one-mile walk from the start). This time of year\, Philly’s green spaces are bustling with migrants as well as year-round species. Then we’ll take a tour of the Fair Amount Food Forest\, a community-based\, publicly-accessible\, and educational food forest garden located outside of Woodford Mansion in Fairmount Park. \nABOUT FAIR AMOUNT FOOD FOREST: Fair Amount Food Forest is a community farm and educational garden on roughly two acres in East Fairmount Park\, whose landscape is diversely planted with fruits\, nuts\, berries\, herbs\, and vegetables. The landscape is intentionally planted to mimic a natural ecosystem\, provide healthy produce to residents and volunteers\, and serve as an educational public garden that benefits and engages its local community. \nThis hike is part of our Second Saturday Guided Hike Series. These hikes occur on the second Saturday of every month (April–November). Second Saturday hikes are at various locations. \nABOUT BIRDING INSTRUCTOR: Troy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world.Troy’s work has been published by Discovery Warner Bros.\, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, Grid Magazine\, Northern Virginia Bird Alliance\, The Chestnut Hill Local\, and other regional publications. \nTroy is also an avid birder and experienced guide\, leading regional and international birding tours with Hillstar Nature\, Delmarva Birding Weekends\, DC Bird Alliance\, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay\, and TB Wildlife Photography LLC to name a few organizations. Troy also volunteers as Field Trip Chair for Liberty Bird Alliance where he coordinates and often leads domestic and international birding trips for the members. \nTroy currently lives in Montgomery County with his wife and daughter and loves spending his free time with them birding\, hiking\, biking\, or playing bird-themed board games. \nTICKETS: Free**\, donations appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Finishing off our month-long celebration for wildlife at the Schuylkill Center\, we will be hitting the trails for one of our beloved nighttime hikes. See the woods from a whole new perspective as we gather for an evening of exploration while the sun sets. Together we will create our own lanterns\, then take a guided hike with our educators through the trails. Winter uncovers a unique beauty in our forest while the trees are bare and the nights are quiet.\nSign Up\nWinterfest\nThis event is part of our Winterfest series\, which celebrates wildlife at the Schuylkill Center. We invite you to bring a donation of cotton balls\, kitchen trash bags (13 and 55 gal)\, free and clear laundry detergent\, or Dawn dish soap to this event to help us care for sick\, injured\, or abandoned wildlife at the Wildlife Clinic.

SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

Cuba’s conservation team manages to restore and protect native habitats. \nPost-Run Celebration\nAfter you cross the finish line\, stay to celebrate and connect with nature\, community\, and conservation: \n🌱 Conservation Collective: Learn about Mt. Cuba’s work in land management\, reforestation\, and meadow restoration\, and meet other local conservation partners preserving wildlife habitat in our region in our conservation expo. \n🚜 Hay Wagon Rides: Take a 30-minute scenic ride through Mt. Cuba’s hills and fields to see restoration projects up close. \n🚶‍♀️ Walking Tours: Join guided tours to explore sections of the course and learn more about Mt.
