SUMMARY:Relics and Ruins: Weird West Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hike to learn about some of Fairmount Park’s historical hidden gems!\n\nDATE\nSaturday\, March 2 \n\n\n\nTIME\n9:00 am – 12:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nBelmount Plateau Parking Lot \n1800 Belmont Mansion Drive\nPhiladelphia PA\, 19131 \n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships and park history enthusiast\, on Saturday\, March 2 from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM for a three-mile guided exploration of the relics and ruins of West Fairmount Park. If you’re fascinated by Philly history and appreciate hidden treasures of the park’s past\, this hike is not to be missed! \nAs one of America’s oldest urban parks\, Fairmount Park has accumulated many layers of history… sometimes literally! A closer exploration of the landscape reveals the ruins of abandoned infrastructure and buildings that go back to the beginnings of the 178-year-old park system\, and sometimes even further. Most of the year\, nature cloaks these hidden treasures in dense growth\, but the bare woods of the winter provide the perfect time to go off the beaten path. \nOn this hike\, we’ll start at Belmont Plateau and touch upon a section of the Trolley Trail. Next\, we’ll find the hidden remnants of the Philadelphia Columbia Railroad rail tracks. Finally\, we’ll explore the ruins of the George’s Hill Reservoir\, taking in one of the most secret and spectacular city views. \nPlease note: These hikes will have some challenging sections that require agility. Since we will occasionally venture off trail\, you are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and rugged outerwear that can withstand scrapes from sharp sticks and branches (please… no fashion or formal wear!:)). \nEstimated distance: about three miles\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: John Sigmund is a multidisciplinary artist\, history lover\, and urban park enthusiast with years of experience as a nonprofit manager and arts educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, he spent a decade living in Austin\, San Antonio\, and New York City\, but made a happy homecoming to go back to school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. John has the proud distinction of actually living in Fairmount Park– he and his partner Jaime are resident caretakers at Lemon Hill Mansion. And although Lemon Hill is his home base\, John is an enthusiastic advocate for all of the historic houses in the park system. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \n**This event is part of our West Park Program Pack – a bundle of three distinct West Park programs offered for a discounted rate. It can be registered for individually (below) or as part of the Program Pack. If interested in registering as part of the pack\, visit this website. Program Pack space is limited. Registration ends February 24 or when spots fill – whichever comes first.** \n

SUMMARY:Connecting with Nature: Valentine’s Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Rekindle your love of nature in the heart of winter with this Valentine’s hike on the trails. \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, February 11\, 2024 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFriends of Chamounix Tennis Courts\n50 Chamounix Dr\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19131 \n\n\n\n\nRekindle your love of nature in the heart of winter. Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape language keeper Krista Nelson on a two-mile guided Valentine’s hike and meditation on Sunday\, February 11 from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM. \nBetter than a box of chocolates\, we’ll make sure Mother Nature is seen and heard. Witnessing the sights and sounds of nature\, especially in winter\, demonstrates our highest level of appreciation. “Witnessing is the first step in nurturing a relationship. And a deeper relationship with nature is good medicine for everyone\,” Krista teaches in her Nature As Lover program. \nWe will hike on the historic Trolley Trail\, stopping to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us along the Chamounix Creek\, where we will spread out in seated positions at the water’s edge and collectively meditate\, accompanied by the reassuring rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. Then\, we will accompany the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous music. Krista calls this practice of listening to water and reciprocating with sound\, “Creek Drinking.” She says\, “When we take sips of the creek with our ears and respond with music\, we can process feelings of isolation.” This is next-level reciprocity! \nFinally\, we’ll gather at a historic picnic pavilion for a fireside celebration. The light and warmth of the fire will remind us that longer days are returning and spring is on the way. Hot chocolate\, s’mores\, and other snacks will be available. \nEstimated distance: about two miles\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \n\nTICKET PRICE: $15\n\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe hike is roughly two miles over mainly hilly trails.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nBring water (drinking water is not available in the park) and a snack.\nUnfortunately\, there are no bathrooms along the hike route so please plan accordingly.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: We’ll meet at the parking lot across from the Friends of Chamounix tennis courts. There is plenty of free parking available in the lot. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Belmont Ave and Belmont Mansion/Fairmount Park Drive – a half-mile walk from the start. The closest Indego bike station is at Parkside and Belmont Ave – also a half-mile walk from the start. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n

According to the Farmers Almanac\, November’s moon is called the “Beaver Moon” because it signals the time when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges before the long winter ahead. Native American tribes have also referred to it as the “Digging Moon”\, “Deer Rutting Moon”\, and “Whitefish Moon”. \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. Next\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: 2 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator.
