SUMMARY:SWWAG Workshop: How to make Compost and FSA info
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make compost through a six-step process that begins with transforming recycled food waste into nutrient-rich soil. This demonstration highlights the current depletion of the city’s soil and shows how composting can restore its vitality—producing dark\, fertile earth capable of growing nutritious fruits and vegetables that support optimal health. \nThe Philadelphia Farm Service Agency(FSA) will also be tabling during the event to share USDA resources for urban growers. County Executive Director Nina Berryman will speak to participants about the FSA and answer any questions. She can discuss farm numbers\, youth loans\, and other financial safety net programs the FSA has to offer. \nLed by Nefertari Muhammad (beginner-level workshop).

SUMMARY:Earth Appreciation Day - Plants and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Temple University at the Discovery Center as we work to maintain our habitats and conservation work for Earth Day! This site is home to over 170+ species of birds\, many species of insects and mammals\, and up to thousands of visitors per year. Our efforts can aid in the livelihood of these animals and stewardship for the people. We’ll focus on removing invasive bushes and plants around the trailhead so we can plant native shrubs in the future\, as well as fill our seed packets for the public seed library. \nAfterwards\, we open our space to an open stage for those to come and share their voice and appreciation of our earth and community. This can be through poetry\, stories and other types of offerings. This session will start with a brief\, Strawberry Mansion history lesson from our neighborhood and tour leader Judith. \nTime: 1-2:30pm Volunteer Engagement / 2:30-4pm Open Stage \nVolunteer and Open Stage sign up can be found here! https://forms.gle/WEattkr7Q34WwufS8 \nReach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Daylily Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Daylily is a feature length documentary that explores the devotion surrounding a plant that blooms for only one day. Through the personal stories of gardeners from different backgrounds\, the film reflects on the fleeting beauty of life and the quiet meaning found in moments that often pass unnoticed. By observing these flowers\, which appear briefly and are found everywhere\, the film invites viewers to recognize the same fragility\, value\, and presence within themselves. \nDuring the making of the film\, I traveled to nine U.S. states and two countries\, interviewing gardeners along the way\, and ultimately finished the project with a deeper appreciation for the small\, often overlooked moments we pass by every day. One of the most meaningful moments in the film centers on what many people casually call “ditch lilies.” Flowers that are easy to ignore slowly become something an entire community learns to truly see and celebrate. \nAnother powerful story comes from the history of daylily hybridizers and the ongoing efforts of today’s growers who are shaping the future of the plant. \nWorking on this project changed my perspective on life\, and I hope it can offer the same inspiration to those who watch it as it did for me while creating it. This film brings warmth to winter and allows audiences to experience the peace and unexpected gifts that flowers bring to us all.

SUMMARY:Journeywork Fall Community Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our free annual fall community gathering on Saturday\, November 1 from 3:00-5:00 at Plymouth Friends Meeting\, 2150 Butler Pike\, Plymouth Meeting. \nIt is a time to celebrate what we have accomplished this season\, give thanks to our tremendous volunteers\, swap seeds\, enjoy refreshments\, and learn from our engaging speaker Katie Fisk about how we can invite wildlife into our yards. Please RSVP to paige@journeywork.org if you would like to attend. \nHabitats offer wildlife the food\, water\, shelter\, and space that they need in order to survive. Learn how to add each of these elements to your living space no matter where you live. From the basics of bird feeding\, to brush piles\, to offering (and managing) water through a bird bath\, DIY pond\, or rain garden\, you can turn your yard into a 5-star wildlife resort! \nKatie Fisk has a BS in Wildlife Biology\, a MS in Environmental Education and Interpretation\, and has been an environmental educator for nearly 20 years. She loves connecting people of all ages to nature and helping them make new discoveries about the world around them. At home\, her greatest passion is working in her native garden and observing all the birds\, bugs\, and flowers it supports. She is proud to be the recipient of the 2025 Land Ethics Award for Individual Effort.
