DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe League of American Bicyclists’ mission is to build a Bicycle Friendly America for Everyone\, improving lives and strengthening communities through bicycling. Our successes to date are thanks in part to the growing bike movement\, a network of changemakers leading at the national\, state\, and local levels. \nTo achieve even more wins for better biking that benefit everyone\, we must continue to grow this movement by empowering more people to be capable\, confident leaders and advocates in their communities. \nIn support of this goal\, the League is thrilled to announce that we have launched a new workshop for people to become certified as a League Cycling Advocate (LCA). Our next LCA workshop will take place July 24-26\, 2024 in Philadelphia\, PA. You can find a recap of our first LCA workshop\, which took place in March 2024 in Washington\, DC\, on the League blog here. \nWho Should Attend? \nThese advocacy workshops are open to anyone\, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. The workshop is geared toward emerging leaders\, advocates newly entering the bike movement\, and anyone else interested in gaining League certification as a bike advocate. \nWorkshop Content & Format \nThe workshop will be in-person and conducted over three days. The first day consists of an evening happy hour and group ride\, the second day includes a full day of training\, group ride\, and happy hour and the third day wraps up with a half day of training. \nThe workshop will cover advocacy basics such as the history of bike advocacy\, how to get organized\, effective political engagement\, making the case\, coalition building\, policy basics\, funding\, storytelling\, equity and mobility justice\, and more. \nThe content of the workshop will involve group work\, happy hours\, bike rides\, as well as individual self-guided readings which will be given to all participants ahead of the workshop. \nBy the end of the workshop and accompanying readings\, you will be equipped with the tools and training to implement the ideas\, strategies\, and practical applications in your communities that build the bike movement at the local level. \nLocal Host \nThe League is grateful to our local hosts for the July 2024 workshop\, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP). Through advocacy and education\, BCGP leads the movement to make every bicycle ride safe\, to empower youth and adults to ride\, and to foster a ridership that reflects the diversity of the Philadelphia region. They are helping us make this event successful by connecting us with local advocates\, guest speakers\, group rides\, bike joy\, and sharing lessons learned from their years of hard work. Consider supporting BCGP in that work by making a donation. \nCost \nThe cost of the workshop is $100 which includes one day of lunch and two days of snacks\, as well as the certification\, and all materials associated with the workshop. DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “How We’re Watched\,” on the long history and chilling future of the surveillance of faces and bodies\, with Sharrona Pearl\, associate professor of bioethics and history at Drexel University and author of Do I Know You? From Face Blindness to Superrecognition. \nMany of us associate facial recognition technology with sci fi depictions of a dystopian future. The reality\, however\, is that technology intended to track our faces and bodies has already been with us for a very long time. \nLearn about the fascinating and fraught history of biometric surveillance\, and where it might be headed\, with Professor Sharrona Pearl\, historian and theorist of the face and body whose other books include Face/On: Face Transplants and the Ethics of the Other and About Faces: Physiognomy in Nineteenth-Century Britain. \nWe’ll look back at the analogue precursors to today’s digital surveillance tools. You’ll learn about physiognomy\, which involved “reading” facial features to learn about character\, as well about the development and use of fingerprinting. You’ll be introduced to figures such as Alphonse Bertillon\, the French police officer and biometric researcher who developed the first scientific system that used measurements of body parts to track criminals and later played a key role in standardizing the use of mug shots. You’ll learn how the chief East German border guard at Checkpoint Charlie\, the busiest border between East German and West Germany during the Cold War\, developed an analogue system of face recognition technology to prevent people from sneaking across the border. \nFocusing on the present\, Professor Pearl will talk about current facial recognition technology and how a dramatic decline in the number of false positives made through it should not be interpreted as meaning it has improved. She’ll discuss how we should be concerned about how much our privacy is being eroded as increasingly effective and accurate surveillance technology tracks people across time and space.
