Members of the TrailOff team will be on hand to help you get set up. \nListen to the story as you walk at your own pace. Bring a charged smartphone and headphones! We’ll bring the water and snacks!\nTrail starts south of Rector Street\, just past the round “Rector Street” sign near benches.\nRound trip is 4.2 miles or approx. a 2 hour walk. This is a medium difficulty trail with both pavement and gravel surfaces. Heavy foot and bike traffic\, especially at the start. Paid parking available near the start point. SUMMARY:Joiri Minaya: Venus Flytrap
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar presents a site-specific\, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden\, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell\, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom\, extraction\, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden. \nMuch like a Venus flytrap\, the plant this project is named for\, Joiri Minaya’s practice often employs beauty before its bite\, utilizing sensuality\, lush florals and hues to invite deeper reflection on thornier aspects of history and the impacts of colonialism. For this project\, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series\, custom textile elements\, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram’s Garden. \nEstablished in 1728\, Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America\, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia’s history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for Indigenous trade to the role of founder John Bartram in popularizing Eurocentric notions of “modern botany\,” Bartram’s Garden can be understood as a microcosm for the ongoing colonial experiment. With Venus Flytrap\, Minaya extends her longrunning interest in foregrounding the histories and possibilities of local and Indigenous plant life. Together\, Minaya and Cassell seek to reveal hidden histories of labor and anti-colonial resistance buried in the grounds of Bartram’s Garden and historic Kingsessing\, and their echoes across the Americas.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of the ASHM Balcony exhibit Across the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway to America. \nEnjoy traditional Norwegian recipes\, a special kransekake from MANDEL bakery\, and the opportunity to meet Susan Satkowski\, Honorary Consul General to Norway. \nAcross the Atlantic explores the trans-Atlantic journey of the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to sail to the United States. Traveling aboard a small sloop called the Restauration\, the 1825 voyage took three months and challenged the strength and resolve of its passengers and crew from the very onset of the journey. The exhibit highlights the Sloopers’ experiences on the open sea and their eventual arrival in the United States. \nAcross the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway is part of Crossings Bicentennial in North America. The exhibit is made possible with support from the Sons of Norway Foundation. Silvana Cardell’s new production TERRA: Bodies & Territories will premier in June on the forested land of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in northwest Philadelphia. Cardell’s production aligns the bodies of her dance ensemble with the land\, merging human movement with nature to reveal our inextricable livelihood and empowerment.\nIn this program leading up to the June performances\, Cardell’s work will be discussed in conversation with the groundbreaking work of the artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985)\, whose performative artistic practice embedded her own body into the land. Filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta introduces Ana Mendieta’s work through two short films\, Ana Mendieta\, Nature Inside (8:23 min) and Whispering Cave (27 min) for this exclusive screening. Bringing Cardell’s new production and Mendieta’s work together\, art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi will moderate a conversation on the legacy of ecofeminist artistic practice and its relevance today.\n \nRegister Now\n \nAbout the Presenters: \nSilvana Cardell\, a dancer\, choreographer\, and educator\, has been awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography. Her work often addresses social issues and challenges dominant cultural narratives.\nCardell’s performances have been showcased domestically and internationally since the late-90s. Her projects have received significant funding from prominent organizations\, including the National Endowment for the Arts\, Pew Center for the Arts & Heritage\, and the New England Foundation for the Arts\, The National Endowment for the Arts\, and Mid Atlantic Foundation of the Arts. She is also committed to advancing dance in her communities\, having founded several organizations\, including EDA Escuela de Danza del Abasto\, a three-year professional dance training program sponsored by Secretaria de Cultura de la Nacion in Argentina\, and Sala Ana Itelman\, a performance space sponsored by the Instituto Nacional del Teatro in Buenos Aires and Cardell Dance Studio in Philadelphia.\nIn Philadelphia\, Cardell has collaborated extensively with Manfred Fishbeck at Group Motion Dance Company\, Myra Bazell and Madison Mario at Scrap Performance\, Merian Soto\, theater director Blanka Zizka and created Cardell Dance Theater and Cardell Dance Studio.\nFrom 2009 to 2022\, she served as the Director and Chair of the Department of Dance at Georgian Court University.\nRaquel Cecilia  is an independent filmmaker and writer best known for her recent films on her aunt\, artist Ana Mendieta. Her films have screened at film festivals\, art museums and galleries world-wide. Raquel is also the Administrator of the Estate of Ana Mendieta Collection and has published numerous essays about Ana Mendieta in art catalogues\, most notably the essay on her experience overseeing the digital restoration of Mendieta’s moving image works on film and video in the catalogue Ana Mendieta: Covered in Time & History. She is currently working on a feature length documentary about the life and art of Ana Mendieta and was recently awarded a large grant from a philanthropic organization to help complete the film.\nMey-Yen Moriuchi is the co-editor of Art and Activism in the Twenty-First Century (Routledge\, 2022) which examines the role and breadth of contemporary activist art. Dr. Moriuchi’s book\, Mexican Costumbrismo: Race\, Society\, and Identity in Nineteenth-Century Art\, was published by Penn State University Press in 2018\, and received honorable mention by the Eleanor Tufts Award committee. Dr. Moriuchi received her B.A. in History of Art and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania\, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Art from Bryn Mawr College. Dr.  Moriuchi teaches a variety of topics\, including Latin American art\, art and history of Mexico\, women and art\, public art\, and contemporary art and activism.\n \nMajor support for TERRA has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, with additional support from Georgian Court University\, and the 2025 Creative Sector Flex Fund\, a program by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Taught by regional horticultural experts\, this classroom and field-based program is a series of 12 courses geared toward avid home gardeners and landscape professionals looking to develop a deeper understanding of sustainable landscape design and management. \nJoin us at our free Virtual Open House\, where you’ll be able to meet some of our certificate program staff and instructors\, ask questions\, and get answers! A Zoom link will be emailed to all registrants. \nThe Morris Arboretum & Gardens’ Certificate in Ecological Horticulture is self-paced and can be completed in one year of intensive learning or up to several years at a slower pace. The first four courses in the series will be offered in fall 2025. The certificate is unique in our ecological systems-based approach to landscape design and maintenance. Our program approaches each garden as a complex living system\, where plants\, soil\, water\, animals\, climate\, human activity\, and other elements interact with and influence each other. In hands-on and classroom instruction\, our program teaches design and stewardship strategies that address these relationships holistically rather than focusing on individual components in isolation. \nThe program will focus on our region here in Southeast Pennsylvania. Drawing from our deep expertise in this region’s ecology\, all instruction will speak to our local ecosystems. Here at the Morris we have a long history in the native plants of Pennsylvania — we have literally written THE book on this topic! Instructors in the Certificate Program will include Morris staff members as well as other local professionals that are regionally and nationally acclaimed in ecological horticulture.

Moderated by WHYY climate reporter Sophia Schmidt.\nSign Up\nPanelists\nModerator: Sophia Schmidt\, WHYY climate reporter\nMathy Stanislaus\, Drexel Environmental Collaboratory\nMathy Stanislaus is Vice Provost and Executive Director of Drexel’s Environmental Collaboratory. He joined Drexel from the Global Battery Alliance\, a multi-stakeholder initiative established at the World Economic Forum. There\, he served as its first interim director and policy director with a focus on establishing a global transparent data authentication system to scale up electric mobility and clean energy in alignment with circular economy\, human rights and community development. At Drexel\, he connects The Environmental Collaboratory to global partnerships including the World Bank Energy Storage Partnership\, the Global Battery Alliance\, the World Economic Forum and the Responsible Battery Coalition. He also continues to serve as an advisor to Carbon180 to align carbon removal strategies with community-driven environmental justice approaches. Mathy was the founding co-director of the New Partners for Community Revitalization in New York and served for eight years as the Senate-confirmed assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Land & Emergency Management for the Obama Administration. He saw firsthand the devastation of natural and man-made environmental disasters\, serving as USEPA’s lead emergency response official to respond to some of this country’s largest environmental disasters\, including Superstorm Sandy’s devastation of the East Coast and the Deepwater Horizon (BP) spill devastation of the Gulf Coast.\nAbby Sullivan\, Chief Resilience Officer\, Philadelphia Office of Sustainability\nAbby Sullivan supports municipal climate adaptation by translating climate science into actionable tools and information and leads Philadelphia’s citywide resilience planning. Previously\, she served as an Environmental Scientist at the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) with the Climate Change Adaptation Program where she led the Department’s coastal flood resilience efforts. Abby is a Certified Floodplain Manager and serves on NASA’s Sea Level Change Practitioner Consultation Board. She has a Master of Resource Management degree with a focus on coastal systems from the University Centre of the Westfjords\, University of Akureyri in Iceland.\nFranco Montalto\, Drexel Engineering\nDr. Montalto is a civil engineer interested in the development of ecologically\, economically\, and socially sensible solutions to urban environmental problems\, with a focus on sustainable water resources engineering and climate change. He is a Professor at Drexel University\, where he directs the Sustainable Water Resource Engineering Lab. He is the Founder and President of eDesign Dynamics LLC\, an environmental consulting firm based in New York City\, with an international portfolio of projects. He also serves as the Director of the North American Hub of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN).

DESCRIPTION:Join The Print Center and Steven CW Taylor to hear the artist and gallerist discuss his practice\, his beautiful wood-bound artist book\, his Germantown gallery space and the overarching philosophy of Ubuntu that guides his work. \nTaylor moves between photography\, printmaking and material exploration. His photographs reflect his lived experience shaped by movement\, observation and choice. In 2021\, he founded Ubuntu Fine Art\, a gallery grounded in the principle of Ubuntu – which means “I am an amalgamation of the people I’ve met along the way.” It operates as both a fine art space and a neighborhood anchor. Ubuntu is the thread that connects every image\, conversation and encounter that happens within it. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Public Trust for The People Left Behind\, a conversation on Tuesday\, May 6\, 2025 from 7-8:30pm about the long-term effects of gun violence on local communities beyond the crime scene. The launch event for a new Grid magazine podcast\, the program will be hosted by Afea Tucker and features panelists Vivek Ashok\, Ellie Rushing\, Julien Suaudeau\, and others. Presented in partnership with Grid. \nAbout the Program\nWhy does gun violence reporting in local and national media typically center on the crime scene and the judicial process? How can we break the never-ending loop of the news cycle\, from one shooting to the next? How can we remove the stigma of victimhood and involve local actors (loved ones\, neighbors\, neighborhood associations) in the streamlining of gun violence coverage? Can news outlets shift from emergency reporting about shootings to long form journalism about their personal implications? What kind of storytelling and journalistic standards should we advocate to maximize the agency of survivors and co-victims? What needs to be done to mitigate the risks of exploitation and retraumatization? To what extent is sharing one’s story with the world part of a healing process? \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Vivek Ashok is an Associate of the Center for Violence Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, and a fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Penn Medicine. His research focuses on the language surrounding firearm related violence\, and disentangling firearm violence from mental illness. \nEllie Rushing is the Justice and Injustice Reporter at the The Philadelphia Inquirer. She covers criminal justice and law enforcement in Philadelphia\, including how crime and the court systems impact communities. \nJulien Suaudeau is a writer and filmmaker. He hosts two Philadelphia-centric podcasts: Song of Philadelphia and The People Left Behind. He teaches French and Film at Bryn Mawr College\, where he is the director of the Film Studies program. \nAfea Tucker is The Trace’s Philadelphia Community Engagement Reporter. She oversees Up the Block\, a resource and information hub for Philadelphians affected by gun violence. A veteran media professional and journalist\, her work has been published in The Philadelphia Tribune\, WHYY\, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. \nTerrez McCleary founded Moms Bonded By Grief. In November 2024\, the organization opened the Moms Bonded By Grief Botanical Garden of Healing\, a space built by mothers of homicide victims to honor Philadelphians lost to gun violence. The memorial garden sits at the corner of 51st Street and Woodland Avenue. \nMichelle Kerr-Spry is a Trauma-Informed Specialist and Behavioral Health Generalist\, as well as the Director of Programs and Development for Mothers In Charge (MIC). She joined MIC in 2006\, shortly after the murders of her only brother\, James\, and then oldest son\, Blain\, and has worked there in various capacities for the last 19 years.
